iWork '11 to Launch Alongside Mac App Store in Early 2011?

I don't think so at all. Powerful computers capable of photography/video work will be around for some time. There is just a separation going on between full-function desktop computers and portable computing devices that can do many computing functions.
In Apple's case the full-fledged computers have the user in control of content whereas the portable computing devices have Apple mainly in control of content. That makes a big difference to me.
Anyone know if this product update is from the same team that delivered iLife11? If it is I want no part of it. I have no way to recover the massive damage the new iPhoto did to my photo library. If you press on take lots of backup and make a HD clone. Good luck.

You're right - I didn't realize that. Last time I bought the family pack - I think that was $99, which is a good deal.
Mine isn't either, although when I set it up originally I did use my academic email address. It's an interesting question - I certainly have access to the educational store on-line now.
I assume boxed versions will still be available from the campus stores; but we'll see. It'd be funny if the boxed versions cost less than the "App Store" versions.
This could backfire for Apple. in the App store everyone has equal access to customers and people can "price shop" and will buy what they think has the best features per price.
What happens if someone places Open Office on the app store as a free app?
Currently Oracle is not spending much (if any at all) money marketing Open Office but in the app store people search for apps and what happens when a search pulls up "Open Office Writer" for zero cost.
Will Apple simply disallow any app that might compete head on with an Apple app?
Will Apple have to adjust the price of iWork 11 downward if others try to under cut it?

I'm sorry for being Mr. Glass half empty, but this would really scare me. If the are planning to offer it exclusively in the store, more and more developers would follow suit. And.. I don't know, for me it would be a step closer into making the Mac App Store the only way of installing apps.
I know the store is hugely beneficial to developers and most people. I can't deny how big the exposure is. But I'm just concerned how restrictive and iOS-like the future could be. In a bad way. =S

I welcome this possibility wholeheartedly. But I wouldn't be surprised if apple finds a way to thwart it. 🙄 Open Office offers incredible value (so much for free!) and it would be good if more people knew about it.

I guess you're not aware that Pages, Numbers and Keynote are consistently in the Top 10 downloaded paid applications on the iPad App Store (there's usually at least one in the top 5)? This despite all the competition from Docs to Go and other office applications.
Apple will not have a problem leveraging the App Store to sell iWork. I highly doubt Open Office will even be submitted to the Mac App Store because of license reasons.

That said, I would gladly buy Keynote as a separate package. Kudos to apple for un-bundling these apps. I find Open Office's presentation app a little less than satisfactory.

The one thing it has to have to interest me is a save as .doc (or docx) and .xls option, rather than having to save and then "export to" those formats, as I share many of those kind of docs - all with people who don't have iWorks, and ending up with multiple copies of everything is too much file management for me.
They of course, also have to open in MS Office programs in the same condition they left iWork, which is decidedly not the case today.
(I personally don't care in the case of Keynote, since I only do my own presentations and Keynote produces presentations which decidedly have a unique character. But I'm sure many work in PowerPoint shops.)
What's the rationale for yet another proprietary format anyway?? Anyone have a convincing one?

Try out MicroSoft's PowerPoint 2011. I don't want to say it out loud, but I'm impressed with the improvements that PowerPoint has made so far.
Or let's put it this way: They finally seemed to be able to copy Keynote.

Open Office is an open source software you can download it for free regardless, but not many people cares because everyone is used to Office.
And in my opinion OO sucks compare to both suits from Apple and MS.
There are alternative to the App Store regardless, you can still download software from the internet from developers. Digital download is becaming more populare than retail regardless the App Store.
I had just bought Office and Dreamweaver CS5 in digital download as many other programs(mostly indie).

Ahhh you're good. My wallet keeps getting the best of me and I buy the single user version and install it all the Macs at home. I know it's wrong but family packs get to be expensive. 🙂

Yes, it will be a beautiful new world without physical media. Just let us know how selling your old Mac AppStore software on eBay worked out for you... Oh. Wait. You can't do that anymore because the AppStore doesn't have an option for license transfers.
You know, selling used software is a legal business here in Germany, and with those AppStores everywhere, you cannot perform your legal right anymore. Even if there were no other arguments against using the Mac AppStore, that alone is reason enough not to buy software there. But since Apple will rather quickly stop selling boxed software, what will you do? Use different software, I guess. On a different system platform, I guess.

What features were taken away from iPhoto?
iWeb and iDVD are in iLife '11 but they have not been updated. I doubt there are any plans to do so.
You would redownload it from the App Store on the new computer for free, the same way you do on an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad right now. If I purchased something on my iPhone I can go to my wife's iPhone and download the same app for free. The apps in the Mac App Store are able to be installed on up to five machines.
Do you really only buy your software on disc? How is that even possible? I know of a great many applications that I use on my Mac that do not have a physical version available.

The only purpose of Cydia to install "non apple approved" apps for a LOCKED system (iphone/ipad). The Mac App store is NOT going to stop anyone from installing apps supplied from a website, retail or any other online store. It is only adding a new buying source that makes it easy to handle the apps it supplies.
You don't have to use it, you don't have to even look at it. It's just available for you to use.... Now in 5 years, who knows what will happen, which is the only thing people may want to worry about. Right now, it is not in the end of the world if we have a Mac App Store. I for on am thrilled to have it. I wont need to check for updates manually, I can see when deals happen, price cuts, read reviews, etc. I wont have to worry about saving that email that has my serial number, keep the box around or writing it in a text document somewhere. I also wont have to whip out my credit card for every 3rd party site selling their product.

Don't know why you're so concerned about it. Apple's restrictiveness certainly hasn't stopped many people from buying into their system. The App store has been very successful. I say you should chill out buddy and get on with life, it's only a computer and we're only talking about buying software which is not required for you to use your Mac.

I suspected this about iWork '11. I want a new version BADLY, largely because I use it for work daily (I am a teacher). Let's hope it is coming in the near future.
As for the App Store, I support it so long as it stays an OPTION. Not sure if Apple will let Handbrake through.

Judging by the iOS app store and Apple's general attitude I'm pretty sure it's absurd to even worry about.Not gonna happen.
