Then you're not remembering correctly. Celebrities had iPads and iPhones sometimes a month before everyone else did.
But they had the same product right? Now, we see celebrities with the high class version, and we're suppose to go out in droves to get the low class version? **** that ****. Some of us aren't zombies.

What I meant was, it's for a person more interested in what it does than what it says about us. Therefore, we don't care if people can see a fancy watch face all the time with an expensive brand name. Notice that there is ZERO branding visible on it? People have to know what an Apple watch looks like to know it's an Apple watch. Unlike other luxury items with prominent logos. That's confidence on Apple's part. And understatement I appreciate. Most luxury items look tacky covered in logos, IMO.

I briefly went on a kick to de-logo myself. The only thing it did was make me aware of how covered in logos we are. And many 'logos' aren't even exactly logos. Iconic designs, like the Apple Watch can be just as much of a logo as my Fuel Band is. People, not many understandably, don't recognize the Fuel Band, but everyone knows what jeans have the little red tab off the side of the pocket. I saw a pair that didn't even have the actual logo on the tab. It just had a copyright mark. Cheeky...

But I get you. Aside from the light-up logos on the Mac books, Apple has been rather low key on their logo usage. But they do give us STICKERS!!!

OMG!!! That's why!

So WE can logo our lives!

Ingenious...

The version is the same, just made out of a different material, which doesn't affect the functionality or usefulness of the device.

Someone else realized that the Apple Watch isn't the watch 'for the rest of us'...

It's a high priced toy. I wouldn't pay ten grand for anything I could wear on my wrist, but apparently I'm supposed to *want* to, just to be 'cool'.

And you don't have to pay anything even close to that to have the device. If you want gold as in the metal in conjunction with the device (which is unrelated to its functionality or anything like that), then you pay more for that precious metal being added, but the cost is for that metal and not anything related to the device itself as far as what it does, how it works, etc.

Just as a more "perfect" diamond costs way more than another one that looks practically the same except for an expert seeing more flaws under magnification. What else is new in the world of precious materials and how things have been in the world for not just years, or decades, or even centuries, but pretty much across the whole human existence?

The Star Wars Trailer gave me chills. I was born in '73.

Playing with :apple:WATCH in the store yesterday was amazing, I can't wait to get mine next week.

People who are brainwashed by thinking progressive taxation is wrong give me a headache.

JJ Abrams is a geek.

that is all

It's Apple. They don't need to spend the money on that. People will use it regardless. Celebrity's will join in or risk being caught out there light the public has moved on without them. Years ago the celebrity would've helped Apple but now they are the biggest company in the world. They don't need to beg celebrities to use their products to get people to use them.
And it's all still part of basic marketing/advertising.

Never said I don't care about how it looks, I have my preferences like anyone else. But if you tell me buying a luxury watch for thousands of dollars that only does one or two things isn't pretty much ALL about how it looks and what the person hopes it tells people about them, I would say you were lying. And if that expensive dumb watch didn't show its fancy dial and fancy logo all the time it wouldn't have much value for that person.

This isn't always the case. I truly appreciate the details in my mechanical watches. Yes, I own/have owned Rolex, Omega, Panerai, having bought over $80,000 in watches in the past 14 months. But, one of my favorite watches to wear is the Tudor Heritage Ranger that's on my wrist today. Wear it the most. Sure, Tudor is a brand that's owned and made by Rolex, and they are still fairly expensive to the average person ($3000-6000), but virtually no one (other than true watch enthusiasts) know of them. So almost everyone I encounter on a daily basis knows nothing of the brand, so it's saying nothing about me. Whereas wearing one of my Rolexes gets lots of compliments. But I still typically choose the Tudor to wear each day. Why? Because I like it. Not what everyone else thinks of the name on the watch.

And you like the watch? Might want to check your geek card at the door. The Apple watch has nothing new a tech geek would want.

I have a whole list of things this watch will help me with, including geeky ones like increasing my home automation. And what's more geeky than getting the watch as a part of my registration package for a motion graphics designer conference ;)

Is apple gifting the watches to all the celebs or are they getting to purchase them ahead of everyone.

Regardless, now we know why there is such a shortage.

Not to be that guy but I'm going to be that guy.

Why is it that rich people get the watch early for free and yet customers have to purchase it and then wait? It reminds me of the tax system of the USA.

I'm just saying I want the watch now too. :)

Really? Less than 20 have been spotted on "celebs". Even if 1000 celebrities were given Watches, it wouldn't cause any noticeable shortage when Apple has reportedly produced about 2 million for launch and will be producing 2 million a month after that.

This doesn't have to do with gifting rich people the Apple Watch. It's about getting influential people to wear it and be seen with it. These are trendsetters whether you like it or not. Pharrell alone has likely generated tens of thousands of purchases by being seen with the Watch.

It's not about gifting the Watch to rich people. It's a smart marketing strategy.

Wow.
So much haters on this thread !
Take a chill pill people.
Dont hate others because you dont have one or don't ...want/justify/desire/afford...one !

Where my watch damm it ? 4/24 .... Tic tac

Kind of fascinating seeing so many people here not understand why Apple gives high profile people watches early. Oh well.

In other news, the Sun will "rise" tomorrow morning...

Well at least he's not wearing fishnet tights or a weird glove or pink jelly bracelet with it. And he's not grabbing his crotch. This is about as normal as it gets for a celebrity Apple Watch sighting I guess.

yes it was a joke, and I hope so is your "thousand or millions they will have for people to buy at launch."

On April 24, they will have exactly ZERO to buy.

Please order on-line, go home and wait for the mail man.

In June.

By "at launch" I meant available to preorder and have delivered on the 24th, already sold out.

Is it gold?View attachment 541600

Nope, but looks great.

It reminds me of the watch Hewlett Packard sold briefly in the 1960s. The LED display used too much power to run continuously, so the user had to press a button to tell the time. Otherwise it was a big, clunky, expensive wrist ornament with a blank face.

Fast forward fifty years and not much has changed.

Who said they begged them? They just gave them away to famous people before the general public could purchase theirs. In doing so they're pretty much creating buzz/advertising. I'm pretty sure J.J is an Apple user anyway so he'd be thrilled to wear it.

The functionality or usefulness isn't worth 7,000, which is what celebrities get.

Gotcha. Tell us how you like it. I gotta tell you that home automation function is just ******** gimmick though. If your iphone can't do it, the Apple watch certainly can't do it, unless they disable it for the iphone just so the watch has something unique it can do.

The precious metal that is used is what's worth most of it in those cases, but that precious metal has no effect on how the watch works or what it does for the customer--all of the watches do the same things.

Why is there a special model made with precious metal just for celebrities an the rich? Think about the iphone. No matter how rich or famous you are, the average joe can still buy exactly the same phone as them.

When you wear the watch nobody cares

When jj Abrams wears the watch , it makes the news

Correction:

This thing is so amusing.
None of us here really have figured out what the awatch really will be good for, yet, supposedly, millions of people (who don't know what it is good for either) have allegedly placed orders for something they don't really know anything about. Kinda sums up most of the human race I guess...Oh yeah, and Budweiser is a great beer.

The models most of the celebrities have are the ones you can get too. There's maybe one that has a more customized strap, but you can likely buy the same type of strap from a third party that will (or already does) have them available. Again, pretty similar to how many products have been doing for many years. There have been custom iPhones (at least the casing) as well.

Or plenty of people have figured out what they would use it for and want it for and many of them ordered one (or perhaps even more).

How many people are going to see the watch on your list.

It's called marketing and people need to stop blaming the hundreds of watches they sent out as marketing for any shortage.

Celebrities get a ridiculous amount of free stuff because if they are photographed using it or talk about it is a huge return on advertising investment.
