In a conversation between a Kentucky fan and a Carolina fan, you can assume that football isn't one of the topics being discussed. :D

And in Colorado, football is a safe assumption. :p I still maintain that UNC fans can't take the moral high ground on cheating, but whatever.

When did UNC cheat? Players violated NCAA rules, were ruled ineligible, and didn't play until their eligibility was restored.

Well, I'm a newcomer to jailbreaking, and I didn't JB to get free apps.

I will say this though. I have pirated two applications because of their $20 each price tag. That's extortion.

I just did it for the text tones....if you can customise txt tones in 5 then I will leave the jailbreaking.....
You can. You can customize just about every sound in iOS 5.

To the OP, I didn't jailbreak to pirate. My car head unit locks me out of the iPod app when plugged in. The only way to gain control is to jailbreak it and install a tweak. Legal or not that makes my life a ton easier and doesn't take money out of anyone's pocket.

How is it extortion?

Well, I was mostly just making an exaggeration. A turn of phrase if you will.
However, if you want a literal interpretation, I'll break it down this way.

ex·tor·tion
[ik-stawr-shuhn] Show IPA
–noun
1.
an act or instance of extorting.
2.
Obtaining money or some other thing of value by the abuse of one's office or authority.

An example would be MiWi. It's an extremely popular app however, is it really worth $20? It's a simple enough to turn on the wifi hotspot without Verizon or AT&T noticing. What I find interesting is that Cydia charges the exact amount of money that Verizon and AT&T charges for the monthly service. That's a bit convenient don't you think? Obtaining money by the abuse of the circumstances...
That's my justification at least. Mostly I'm just cheap.

I jailbroke for the customization.

On what do you base this opinion?

Do I really need to point you to the large number of links in this thread showing that it was ruled to be legal again? Plus nobody has ever gotten in trouble for creating modifications like that, and if they could Apple probably would use it to shut down jailbreaking.

Not to mention copyright mainly concerns the redistribution of altered work and non altered work without permission.

I mean, I can not get in trouble for editing my own copy of a novel if I keep it to myself

If it's so simple then why don't you do it? They are charging what they feel it is worth based on their time and work. That's not extortion, not even close. There are other alternatives too, no one is making you use the app.

I agree with most of the other posters. I jb to get the full potential of the phone. If Apple allowed just a bit more freedom in their OS I wouldn't need to jb.

I jailbreak to hide piss poor apple applications/icons that i never use like stocks and weather, change themes, quick sms etc.

My wife's phone is jailbroken. On her 3GS I hid all the cydia icons.
Recently I upgraded her to a ip4 with the lasted jb.
She had new themes and sounds. I asked here where she got them.
I pressed the skull icon and a bunch of stuff came up. I did a search on sounds and themes. I googled how to add themes in sidia and they mentioned winter something. That was on here too. I added item and it rebooted and everything was there. So cool.
Then she realized the ipad2 was jailbroken. Cracks me up.
No pirated apps and the user experienced on the devices.

No need to point out the links. But it would be helpful if you read my explanation of what the links were actually based on.

That's not true. Copyright Law grants three basic exclusive rights to the copyright holder.

1) Reproduction
2) Distribution
3) Preparation of derivative works.

I do not Jailbreak but I hear quite a bit of talk regarding it, anyone I have seen with a Jailbroken phone has pirated apps. Do you think Jail breaking is all about piracy?

You title sound like the movie industry when VCR first came out. They tried to get it banned based on the assumption VCR will put them out of business due to the ability to pirate films.

Switching from a Xoom to ipad2, I personally found the stock IOS lack customization, jailbreak apps give me the ability to change the IOS to fit me usage better.

If you can afford an iphone or an ipad, which are luxury items, surly you can’t be so cheap that you willing to steal apps cost around a cup of Starbucks coffee or a MacDonald meal.

The fact that you have "sidia" makes me believe you conjured up this whole story. Cydia is the most important aspect of Jailbreaking, there is no reason to mis-spell it.

People who jailbreak to get free tethering are no better than app pirates.

I agree and I hate myself for occassionally tethering.

Is going over the speed limit by 1MPH any less illegal than 2MPH or is one more against the law than the other.

some break the law in different ways but everyone tries to justify their doing so. stealing, pirating, and speeding are all illegal. Anyone can put up a defense that doing so isn't hurting the next person. on the flip side anyone can dispute and prove that morally that person is wrong andis hurting someone else. If for that 30 seconds you weren't going 5MPH over the speed limit then you would have been in a different location not hit have that pedestrian or other vehicle.

Please explain why? If I paid for 5GB of data per month, why should it matter if I use it up on my phone, ipad or laptop?

I've tethering on my HTC Sensation which is perfectly legal, why does that make me same as someone who steal other people's property?

that is what baffles me as well.

5GB is 5GB. I get charged for an additional allotment regardless if I use all of that new allotment or not.

If I purchase 5GB of data but only use 2.5GB of data does ATT carry over that unused data to the next month? No, I forfeit it. if I go over the next month I have to pay for an additional allotment of data. how is that fair.

It's simple really... AT&T charges for tethering. You can justify it by saying that you pay $25 for 2GB, but you are paying to use the data on your phone. It's just you trying to justify the high data prices.

Is it fair? No... IT'S ILLEGAL. That's life.

Yes it is.
So is speeding. I wonder if the people passing such strong judgement on tethering and pirating are as critical on speeders. After all they are both illegal. Or is speeding a different class of illegal because it can be argued everyone that drives has done it, making it acceptable.

"Passing strong judgement?" Are you just trying to cloud the discussion? I don't know many people that would argue that speeding is legal, so I'm not sure how your analogy works.

And, yes, obviously copyright infringement and traffic violations are "different class[es] of illegal." Are you trying to imply that all illegal actions are the same?

People pay consequences for speeding. $150 ticket plus rise in insurance. Speeding is not thievery. Two completely different subjects at hand. Let's take it a step further and say that anyone who j walks is now a pirate.

People pirate and steal services because there is no consequence. Does that make it right? no it doesn't.

It's because you pay for 5GB on your phone, read the contract you agreed to it.

Illegal is illegal. Wrong is wrong. Some actions may carry heavier penalties.
Definitely not saying that all illegal actions should be punished equally.
I honestly can't justify speeding any more that I can justify occasionally tethering.
If I park in one of the 20 handicap spots at my work on the over night shift were there are only 6 people working should I get a ticket? Should the policeman/trooper be reprimanded for turning a blind eye to the fact we park there? Our argument is, are there going to be a slew of handicap people coming to visit at 2am?
If we got tickets I am sure our position would change.
If we got arrested for pirating a 99 cent app my position would change. Should I be fined $50,000 for that action or we've 5 to 10 years?
If AT&T felt my tethering was excessive and took away my unlimited (I use on average 3gb a month total) I would be upset but have to accept it.

I have to head off and straighten out my skeletons.
Have a good one ladies and gents

If I jailbreak and pirate an app should I do time?
