Amazing how many people forget that when Apple introduced the App Store it was considered an incredibly generous godsend to all the developers who were used to seeing ~70% cuts taken by retailers and metered delivery options.
This is a lie. When Apple introduced the App Store developers were used to the open Mac ecosystem. iOS was not primarily targeted by console developers but ordinary software developers not used to such cuts and walled gardens. You are also mixing up the timeline. The internet existed for more than a decade and people were already used to download software and pay in a multitude of ways.

Despite protests and outcry, Japan steps up and becomes the second country to curb the mobile market dominance Apple has within iOS sphere. This is definitely a move towards the right direction and will force Apple in a big way to do better, rather than writing more oppressive terms and conditions to suppress anyone opposing them.

Besides, Japan already has many different web stores hosting games, software and whatnot. It’s of no stranger to them to hop around multiple markets.

For Apple? They only have two choices. One is to comply and two is to pull out of Japanese market. I think Apple has expanded to all major markets existing in the world already, so pulling any of them out is tough for them to bite, plus stocks could fall should they actually pull out any of those.

Privacy and security of users? More like privacy and security of Apple’s user data than anything else.
It´s a old trick you are playing. Everyone can be a King. You just have to make the kingdom small enough. By isolating the Apple ecosystem and neglecting their relative size to their competitors (Google, Microsoft, Meta, Spotify, Epic+++).

The other platforms have a stake in this battle, it´s an opportunity to weaken a competitor. So they unite with the likes of Spotify (who sold their customers to Facebook years and years ago). This is not a heroic battle to provide the platform users with "freedom". It´s a battle to grab as much as possible of the assets from the users. It is not fought on your behalf. It is fought by huge corporations using a "s**tload of lobbyists and lawyers". The prize is not your freedom of choice. The prize is your cash and every possible detail of personal information they can get their hands.

This battle escalated when Apple put restrictions in place by allowing their users to choose to limit the info vendors could get through their apps. Before that, it was basically Epic(?), Spotify and your cash only.

When Apple offered the option of more privacy, Google, Microsoft and what not chipped in, and they started to work on governments around the world. A massive well directed and planned strategy directed towards governments, unions and public opinion.

One really has to be naive if one believes anything, and I do mean anything related to this, has anything to do with users "freedoms" of any sort. It´s all about your cash and full access to your personal information.

Apple sets certain standards in tracking and data collection. When Meta and Google are forced by Apple to follow those standards (and a million other companies) that has a real impact on the safety, security and privacy that I prefer. But when Meta can just bypass those standards to to governmental interference in the market, all bets are off. And I can't simply not download WhatsApp; it's a requirement for me to do business where I live.
The solution to that is to allow users to restrict iPhone which real data each Darwin user can access. For data accessed from shared locations through libraries, the existing HealthKit and photos interfaces are a good example (there’s no way for an app to tell what data you haven’t given access to) and for file system data the macOS containers and all the other similar approaches (chriots, jails, etc) suggest the way forward, especially if users can provide named pipes to substitute for real devices (eg fake locations instead of real).

That would also improve security and usability even if you only used apple App Store apps, because then you don’t have to rely on Apple’s testers to spot whatever meta etc. can think of.

Interesting how much more respectful and measured Apple’s statement with regard to the Japanese vs the EU.
Because they kill whales and dolphins and have the most extreme and weird sex kinks one can imagine.

Governments want your data and to track you even more than bigcorp so probably they didn't need much persuasion.

Like macOS then?

MacOS and iOS are completely different.

You see, Apple was innovative, created App Store, so they can cut 30% from developer. As someone said in previous thread, developers were very thankful for Apple’s generosity. They were all supportive.

Also you don’t carry your MacOD deceives all the time right? You carry your iPhone all the time, so privacy and security requirement is different. iOS users need walled garden protection, without our data will be leaked like broken pipes. Oh what a nightmare, this brought my memory of flooding basement. You don’t want that. You need protection for you privacy and security. This is “something ONLY Apple can do”.

The house of cards is falling down...
At one point does Apple’s hardware sales start to drop? Because, all these countries are doing is saying that they want to restrict mobile OS’s to Android and iOS, which means continued and expanded use of iOS (and developers will be pushing iOS because they can actually make a profit from it).

Android is only secure if the premise is that your information is protected from Google. It isn´t, never was and never will be. Do I have dillutions about Apple? Not really, but your personal information isn´t their core business model. For Meta, Google and Microsoft since the Linked-in takeover to an increased extent, it is.
As a developer I can assure you that 3rd party Apps can protect your data from Google, but you do have to be diligent in how you setup and use the device.

If you are an Android developer and have information to the contrary, please share it or a link.

I find this funny. Everyone getting all pissed. when people can just choose to not use alternative app stores.
Propaganda at work. If Apple spent as much on freedom, code quality and security as they do on propaganda (marketing) then one Apple store would be enough.

Apple needs the one store concept to protect their security house of cards.

Correct. iOS is much more secure than macOS. The average consumer that has zero technical understanding of security is much safer using iOS than macOS.

So, macOS is less safe than iOS. That doesn’t fit Apple’s goal of providing safe and secure operating system? So macOS users don’t get the same treatment as iOS?

Or Apple is just being double standard?

I was replying to two posters who said that third party app stores would create a "security and performance nightmare" and "bloated mess". I was just pointing out macOS allows downloads from third parties and yet isn't a "security and performance nightmare" nor "bloated mess". Yes iOS is more secure, due to the single Apple controlled app store, but macOS isn't exactly a "security nightmare".

I'm not sure point you think I was making.

Which are hacking sites. again, not everyone in Japan is doing this. Most are outside Japan. I know I was involved years ago in this group. And no, I don't hack devices anymore because people do grow up. Most Japanese don't want hacks on their iPhones. Android is where they play.
“Hacking”
LOL. LMAO even. That’s not what it is but ok

I think a Radiohead lyric is appropriate here. Apple:

You do it to yourself, you do
And that's what really hurts
Is that you do it to yourself, just you
You and no one else

Do you folks not read?

I don't disagree that macOS is less secure than iOS, but I never made the opposite argument. Not sure why you replied that way. My point is that macOS isn't a "security nightmare".

Apparently I am not sarcastic enough.

If you read what I said on post #296 you will know what my opinion is.

I can't believe people keep parroting this...

What happens when an app you already own decides to join the Epic, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Steam, etc store via an exclusive distribution agreement? Exclusive agreement meaning they will remove their app from the Apple store.

I will tell you... you will be forced to either abandon an app you already paid for or you will be forced to join another store. Soon users will have an app store account for all of the above which is yet another way for them to hoover your data.
Whenever someone wants to make anything new legal, people say it will lead to the end of the world.
The funny thing is that they say that even when other countries already legalized and live happily.
Windows and macOS already have this, I'm fine with both. Android too.

That´s a tree in the jungle, and the forest bottom is full of red ants and snakes. Too hard to navigate for the users, and Google knows that very well. They get what they want.

Microsoft is fresh in the in-platform shop game. Further, that´s not how Microsoft twist arms. They have entirely different strategies, and compared to Apple, HUGE volumes to draw on. On every occasion I have used Windows frequently the last 20 years, it has been because I was forced to. Had nothing to do with "my" platforms and their capabilities. A close relative of mine, the Professor, was a long term Mac (and iPhone) user, and was forced to convert. All applications were available on her Mac. I know that, because i performed tests of them all, and verified compatibility.
