FYI, Leno explained his side of the story tonight. It seemed pretty genuine. He said there might be news tomorrow.

I just hope it isn't Leno bailing, too. That would cause a debacle of unprecedented magnitude. (Yes, it's a crazy suggestion, but given that Leno is now technically "damaged goods"....)

Jay and O Brian

Jay is really not that great, only his j walking is funny.

Connon is a goofy SOB and love it! Stay alive conan

How shameful for Leno to even think about taking Tonight Show back, even if Conan sucked (and I don't think he does. Just seems degrading.

It'd be cool for Leno to tell NBC to go F themselves, but Leno's show takes a lot more than just Leno to happen. He's got to think about everyone else's job too. It's not an easy situation for him to be in.

Not sure if this was mentioned but didnt Conan never do Mondays on the late show? Why not just let Jay his show on Mondays and Conan can do the rest of the week. Then everyone wins.

And he stole that from Stern just like headlines.

Any good bit Jay does was stolen from somewhere else

True.

Anybody know the size of his staff?

Leno said it last night, I think 175 people. Looks like Conan is making sure his staff is getting a nice settlement out of NBC also, roughly $8 million worth. Of course, if he has 175 people working for him — that’s not very much considering they’ve uprooted their families and moved from New York.

Leno could care less about his staff.
During the writers strike Leno and Conan both let their writers go without pay while Letterman continued to pay his staff even though they weren't working.

It took Letterman's interdiction in the strike to end it.

It’s a little different for Letterman since his production company, Worldwide Pants, actually owns The Late Show.

And Leno did end up paying his entire staff even though they’re not employed by him, they’re employed by NBC.

Like Letterman. Leno and Conan have their own production companies for their respective shows. That production company paid/didn't pay the writers.

I forgot what Leno's company is called. Conan's is called Conanco.

And neither Letterman or Ferguson returned to work until they had reached an agreement with their writers, they never crossed a picket line. Jay did, and his show was even worse without his writers. I don't remember what Conan did.

Very true but Letterman paid his staff while they were on strike.

Yes, they have production companies. However, Leno and Conan still don’t own the shows like Lettermen. This was a key part of Letterman’s move to CBS. Worldwide Pants actually owns The Late Show (and the Late Late Show among others) and employs Lettermen’s staff. CBS pays Worldwide Pants only.

Here’s a NYT article discussing it. Again, it’s a completely different situation.

At The Tonight Show and Late Night, all the staff is employed by NBC. Which is why NBC can screw around with Leno, Conan and their staffs.

"This is really significant because, as opposed to all of the other shows, this money comes out of Dave's own pocket." When Late Show stopped making new episodes last week, CBS ceased paying Letterman's production company on November 5th."

While Letterman does own his production company he didn't have to pay his writers since CBS stopped paying WWP during the strike. Letterman paid them anyway.

And as has been said, Leno paid his staff:

Jay Leno to Pay Staff

I'm far more impressed with Jay and Conan paying their staffs out of their own pockets than I am with Dave, as the former's people were NBC employees who got their checks from NBC and who Jay and Conan went out of their way to pay while the writer's strike was being sorted while Dave (not CBS) had been paying his writers all along directly.

It takes a lot more to go out of your way and pay your staff than it does to be so "kind-hearted" as to not stop sending them the checks you've always written.

I don't buy Leno's defense that he's just looking out for his staff. He gave them a 5 year warning when he announced back in 2004 he would retire. This messy situation would not exist if he had kept to his word. Is he going to work until he dies just so they'll keep their jobs?

I love how Leno tries to act like a helpless bystander. He mentioned that on two occasions he "asked" to be let out of his contract, NBC said no, so he's forced to do their bidding. What strikes me as BS about that is that Conan was still under contract, but his team of lawyers got him out of it with a payoff. Leno could do that too if he actually wanted to.

I just can't fathom what goes on inside Jay's mind. Why after 17 years of hosting the tonight show, at least $100 million in the bank, every car he could ever want, and a wife I assume he loves, he STILL feels the need to keep doing a show, screwing over his successor.

Conan's being asked by NBC to leave; Jay isn't. That's the difference.

This is what NBC wanted all along. What a cluster**** on their part.

Just watched Jay's Point of view, what a complete jackass. trying to make himself look like the innocent bystander, he just looks like a conniving jerk.
