But I don't see new iPods coming out within two weeks.

It's pretty odd. If iPod Nano and Touch are coming soon they must be ramping up the production and yet we haven't seen any part leak yet.

I hope this is the year they move to a buffed back on iPod Touch. Here's hoping.

iPod Touch is really long in the tooth. I wonder if it will die or be replaced by the smaller iPad. The entire iPod line seems kinda weak.

Unfortunately the entire MP3 and PMP market is now weaker than they have ever been. As underwhelming as iPod Touch can be, it's pretty much the only hope for those who are in the market. Personally I absolutely love the size and thinness.

This makes a lot of sense. And it's more than the iPhone not wanting to share the spotlight. Based on the rumors and hardware leaks, the new iPhone production is ahead of the smaller iPad production. The smaller iPad won't be ready for a September release. Apple doesn't announce new versions of existing products unless they are ready to start selling them in the very near future (1 or 2 weeks).

Nerds like us already know there is almost definitely a smaller iPad coming out soon. "Normal people", not so much. If Apple announced a smaller iPad on Sept 12 *every* television and radio show would be talking about it. I can guarantee Apple won't be selling many current iPads between the announcement and the release. People will want to compare the two devices (or at least read someone's hands on review) before deciding to get the 10" iPad or the smaller & cheaper iPad.

I believe sales will pick back up for the 10" iPad in November or so. The smaller iPad isn't going to totally replace the 10" one, but I do expect Apple to sell a *ton* of smaller iPads.

On top of minimizing the time between announcement and release, do you guys remember how large the lines are on iPhone release days? Just as a pure logistics standpoint it would be a complete fuster cluck to have a new iPhone and iPad on the same weekend, or even the same week.

So, if this theory is true, everything works out better sales wise, logistics wise, and Apple gets the added benefit of being in the press 24/7 for most of September AND October. Sounds like a brilliant strategy.

2 media events? Seems more legit to launch 2 separate devices in 2 separate events.

Is that picture going to be the new "I'm a Mac" campaign:

Hello, I'm an android phone

And I am an iPhone

I've said it before, I'll say it again: the iPad mini is probably one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard of.
I've also said when it doesn't come out, I'll call all the reporters who so vigorously believed in it and touted it as fact idiots.
If it does come out, there will be no apology from me...rather...I'll just call the folks at Apple who let this come to pass idiots.

When the iPad first came out I was hoping for a smaller more portable version that would be more suitable to my needs. Anyway, thanks so much for explaining that I was thinking like an idiot. I don't know what I would do without your exemplary tutelage. You are one smart cookie.

Now IF and I mean IF Apple launch an iPad mini then this is surely common sense because one way or another they are going to have to restructure the iPod line up and pricing to accommodate an iPad mini so it makes sense to launch it at the ipod event no?

Or they have one event for both and the rest is silently updated when the store and tie come back online afterwards

Dude, face it. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with 7-inch tablets.

10-inchers take up a lot of surface area for a "mobile" device. It's a full-blown Ikea catalog when sometimes you just want a paperback. It's hard to thumb type. It doesn't fit easily into a woman's purse. It's a lot of weight to hold up in your hands for long periods (especially since it's skinny and slippery). It makes you feel silly when you take pictures (OK this will only be somewhat alleviated by a Mini).

There's tons of reasons why a 7-inch iPad would be a good thing. Being "anti 7-inch" is like being anti-Microsoft. So passé. :p

I always wonder what Slash looks like without the hat, without the shades and a pony tale. I bet Slash doesn't even know what that looks like.

Sure it is. If the current large iPad is killing all others what's the reason for making a smaller one. None.

Apples own retail stores.
I mean in Apples own stores there isn't a single use of the iPad or iPod touch that wouldn't be better served by something in between. I'm sure Apple retail aren't the only big customer Apple has who wants something in that range.

Look at Apples configurator tools and for Company and Institutional use something in the 8inch range would be a very useful product. So Retail, Schools, Museums and on....

I think the new model is about better servicing highly interested markets. Not just consumers, but business and institutional markets that Apple doesn't want to leave wanting this time.

Because the current iPad has left a pricing umbrella. That's why the fire is the most successful competitor. Because it's only $200. The pricing umbrella has been discussed over and over again on this site and even acknowledged by Apple.

If it's an Apple music event, shouldn't it feature an iPad playing a Calvin Harris song? I mean, one that's newly and automatically generated by Objective-C code on the iPad, not Calvin Harris himself.

I wonder what the likelihood is of an event to mark the anniversary of Steve Jobs' death at the beginning of October? If there is a particular device that he was most involved in and excited about, I can imagine Apple finding a way of honouring him without being too lacking in taste. It would certainly fit into the timescales being discussed here.

With an iPhone and an MBA, I'm certainly very interested in a smaller iPad. I travel a lot and sometimes even my MBA is too much.

If that were true we would see a 42 in. Apple Television presented.

;)

Riddle me this: why is a 7.85 iPad only a "7 inch" and a 9.7 inch iPad a "10 inch"?

I know. It's because, up to this point in time, Android tablets, et al have only been successful in 7 inch or smaller format, which, for lack of Apple's entry into the market, has defaulted to a 7 inch tablet class.

So when Apple enters the fray, all of the nerds, geeks, and pundits will call it a 7 inch tablet.

lame

Are you being serious? Steve Jobs himself never aligned himself with his own opinion. The sole reason they have flourished in the past decade is because of him willing to backtrack on what he initially thought to be sound.

He didn't change ALL of his opinions ALL the time. The times when he did change we sometimes find out about. But you act like he was always was against common sense and then somehow came around.

Since he is not here anymore I don't think we will ever know if he would have changed his opinion on the issue of tablet sizes. But we do know that he was against the idea.

I don't believe you presume to know better.

Wasn't the iPhone 4S an iPhone-only event? I think every iPhone has been announced at its own event.

I think the first event introduced the iPod touch too? I remember they kept saying we're introducing 3 devices (iPod, web browser and a phone?) but it was really all in one. Something like that. Or did they show an iPod too. Then the touch. Then the phone?

I'm not sure about the two events. If they really do NFC and want to do a big rollout, they'll need to announce the iPads too. Right?

too lazy to read through 100+ comments to see if anyone else has already stated this so forgive me if so

if apple indeed holds off on announcing the ipad mini till a later "music event" i feel it adds more weight to my earlier prediction of this new device actually being an ipod XL, all while still preserving the word of SJ as to a 7" tablet being DOA...but a 7" ipod now that is genius! lol, we'll see

That's it, it's just the new iPod. Now people who allready have an iPad won't have a bad feeling about buying a "smaller one". In the end you have an iPhone, iPod and iPad. It just fits in perfectly.

Right, because there's zero demand for ~7" tablets. Apparently, kids and women don't exist

Well, what would you call yourself once (and if) the iPad "mini" does come out and turns out even more successful than the iPad (classic), in the same manner that the iPod Mini did a few years back? A blithering idiot, perhaps?
