I got distracted by Slash, wut?
Yeh, they look like they've known each other for years
What gets me is
those that know, can't tell.
For example, in Australia, journalists that kept their mouths shut - Macworld and newspaper journos alike, had the first iPhone released here (3G) for weeks before release, and the bloggers knew nothing about it.
Little birdies can drop hints (
official rumour, if you will), but Dalrymple seems to be in the know, AND able to tell, without harming his relationship with Apple. Maybe that won't last.
The Isaacson biography describes how Apple crafts relationships with the media as carefully as they craft their products. One gets all the good leaks for a while, then another gets them. (OK, to be blunt, it says they play journos off against each other - like a symphony - and Jobs delighted in it.)
Gruber can guess, although he seems to get incredibly lucky whenever Schiller is in the picture. (Most recently, an actual invite to the Mountain Lion preview), but Dalrymple just keeps on keeping on. Maybe the magic won't last, but it seems to be the longest streak of good info (that can be published), in the history of Mac journalism. Or maybe he has a special role of hosing down expectation at just the right time
I watch in awe.
Mountain Lion was an exercise in how tightly Apple could control information, post Steve. And clearly, they are still MASTERS of it. Any genuine info that 'escapes' is well controlled.
