I wonder if he is ready for retirement. He did a Howard Stern interview and discussed retirement along with what he would imagine his ideal day is like if he was retired. This guy has done a lot, maybe he would just like to slow down for awhile? I say slow down, because he does not seem like the type to truly retire and sit still.

I don’t understand the hate. His résumé is quite astounding.

He's leaving God.

Look what happened when Lucifer left God in the Christian faith.

;)

Edit: since 2 people seemed to have missed the intended point- thinking I'm confused about Iovine leaving vs. Lucifer getting "fired", the example revolves around the implication of Lucifer as "right hand man" or "the favorite" among the angels of heaven. Then, he leaves and becomes the most hated of the hated. Conceptually, there would have been a historical time when Lucifer was as beloved as any other player in that cast- perhaps moreso- as the apparent favorite. And then, he took actions that led to his departure- whether voluntary or involuntary doesn't really matter here.

It's not about the differences in how either character left but it's an analogy for "understanding the hate." In other words, Iovine was relatively (public sentiment) fine while he was a part of Apple, but now that he's leaving, the hate wells... as if it's some defection or like he's calling our own baby ugly or something. The astounding resume doesn't matter. He's daring to choose to leave God... 'er, I mean, Apple.

Other examples of this can be found in Apple history. Remember Ron Johnson, head of Apple retail? Fine while we was within the bubble but then the crowd turned on him when he departed. His replacement was relatively welcomed until Apple realized that was not a great match, let it become known and then the crowd turned on him too going out the door and after he was gone.

Less (directly) relevant but still somewhat telling: recall when Woz said he favored an Android phone over an Apple iPhone. Woz's resume has to cast him as either the mother or father of Apple Inc. There probably is no Apple without Woz, so certainly he can have a little slack with his personal opinions. Absolutely not! This crowd ripped into him for daring to have a personal opinion that differed from the one he- and all people everywhere- should have.

When Apple acquired Beats, Iovine is one of the main points of rationalizing that $3B purchase. He was praised as music industry genius/god as this crowd tried to help sell why Apple spent that money on Beats instead of many other possibilities. Now he's leaving and "we" are quick to turn on him.

Maybe spelling it out will help the OP "understand the hate" in spite of the "astounding resume?" and "our" generally positive opinions of him in the past. Basically there is no logic in the hate- it's just the usual: How dare this man leave Apple?.. resulting in a quick turn of sentiment against him only because he's leaving. Business as usual.

I pretty much agree with the majority of posters before me. Iovine will not be missed at all. I doubt he’ll be replaced since he didn’t have an official title at Apple. However if he is, hopefully it’s with someone more competent.

I disagree, personally I loved Jimmy's passion and let me tell you, having worked in radio all of my life, passion goes a long way in the music business. I'd love to work with the guy as I think he's real. I get the impression it's that arrogant big 'quite full' man that's crushing his style and jumping on his ideas!
I sincerely wish Jimmy the best and feel that Apple Music will be a far worse place without him even though I never joined or will join Apple music as a subscriber.

He'll never do that. Let me tell you, working in the music industry is awesome and no day is the same. People like Jimmy will never retire. Not many people who are truly passionate about what they do ever retire because when you do, you grow 'old'.

In every interview I've seen or read of him, he seemed to have a real passion for what he was doing. That, to me, made him seem like a good fit with Apple. I'm wondering if he felt he had nothing left to contribute at Apple. Maybe he and Cue weren't seeing eye to eye. It does seem odd timing since Apple Music still has a ways to go to catch Spotify. I figured that he would leave once Apple Music solidified its place as the number one streaming service, not as a runner-up.

Apple Music as a product certainly doesn't feel like a passion project for music lovers. No liner notes, no lossless audio format option, no support for 24-bit audio on Music app, no way to use most features unless you use iCloud Music Library, music recommendations are not well tailored to interests, no "reading list" for favorited music to check out later, ways of viewing music and searching are very limited, anemic tools for connecting artists and fans, .... I could go on.

Iovine often railed against streaming as bad for the industry and for artists, but the product doesn't show any attempt to make that experience better or to provide additional revenue streams for artists.

Thank God. And there are still people out there claiming the Beats acquisition was brilliant. Good grief.

That acquisition gave Apple a healthy headphones business, a popular brand, audio engineers, the second-largest music subscription service, and folks with good connections to the music and film industry.

Was it brilliant? Perhaps not. Worth way more than the price tag? Probably.

By most of the posts here I see MR is full of under informed people on the subject of the music industry.

Losing Jimmy is a big blow to Apple.

You all need to go do some research on just who Jimmy Iovine is in that industry.

i really enjoy apple music. whats with the backlash here? I think its wonderful.

I'm not sure with Iovine did, but being a part of the music industry i can't point my finger to a "bad thing" tbh.
