Good riddance. I knew the guy wasn't a fit for Apple the minute he introduced Apple Music labeling it as "a revolutionary music service" and then hearing the audience laugh at that statement.

Steve Jobs, the guy that introduced iPod to the world was rolling in his grave that day.

If true, that's a shame. Iovine knows more than most anyone else about the dynamics and mechanics of the music industry, with a track record that speaks volumes.

Yet the uniformed will trash him for not being a good fit or a good look. So juvenile. Jeeez...

Really? Cue oversees parts of Apple that pull in countless millions. Clearly he’s doing something right....
Lol. Cue is a bumbler and nothing more.

why do you feel Dr.Dre needs to leave Apple?
what's he doing there that you don't like or what's he doing that's affecting your Apple experience?
Have you missed the 6,000,000,000+ channels of rap on Apple Music?

Not a surprise. He wasn't doing a lot there after Apple Music launched and he's still looking to work in other areas of the music industry.
Yup, he probably got bored. People like that need to constantly be doing something, and Apple Music probably largely runs itself at this point.

I don’t understand the hate. His résumé is quite astounding.
"Shoving hip-hop down our throats" is likely the most accurate reason around these parts, if you pay attention to comments past.

Damn, thought it was Ive that was leaving. Got excited for a moment.

Then realized it said Jimmy and had to do with Apple Music...yuck. Can Apple get rid of Beats too. Biggest POS headphones on the market. But then again, when Apple Music has billions of crappy hip hop stations, I guess it goes hand in hand

Totally agree. Though it sounds like they gave him a position and a standard 4-year stock vesting period as part of the Beats acquisition, and really didn't need him to do anything else besides sell them Beats. But still can't understand the hate.

Spotify > Apple Music
Sennheiser > Beats
Sayonara!
I’m not familiar with Spotify and pretty happy with Apple Music. Can you tell me what make Spotify better? To me, all streaming music are the same. A good song is a good song no matter the service that streams it, don’t you think?

Apple Music is one of the best things Apple has ever done. I hope somebody on the inside is going to keep that service on track.

That being said, he's probably leaving because Apple is starting to make it a spitball of music, original programming, and the occasional documentary film. Strategically it's looking like a bit of a mess.

You say that, but the guy has some incredible nerd cred. He was the actual sound engineer for the Golden Record.

Jimmy has reached mythical proportions as the Black King Midas but found his curse at Apple:
Before joining, everything he touched went into gold - whereas afterwards, everything turned into stone ...

Iovine is unlikely to stay on with the company even if he receives a new offer as his vision has "sometimes clashed" with the views of other executives at the company, including Eddy Cue.

Sounds like Scott Forstall all over again.

Jimmy Iovine fleeced Apple. I remember John Gruber saying on one of his podcasts that the Beats acquisition was all Eddy Cue. He was the only one inside Apple pushing for it. He needs to go along with a Iovine.

Goodbye Iovine, you will not be missed.
It took 2+ years but it's a good thing Apple realized their mistake and fired him.

Um, he is not being fired. He is cashing in his stock options that come due in August. He will then most likely purchase a small nation. ;)

I second, third, and fourth this. Eddy is a tool. :apple:

Apple Music as a product certainly doesn't feel like a passion project for music lovers. No liner notes, no lossless audio format option, no support for 24-bit audio on Music app, no way to use most features unless you use iCloud Music Library, music recommendations are not well tailored to interests, no "reading list" for favorited music to check out later, ways of viewing music and searching are very limited, anemic tools for connecting artists and fans, .... I could go on.

Iovine often railed against streaming as bad for the industry and for artists, but the product doesn't show any attempt to make that experience better or to provide additional revenue streams for artists.

I think you're confusing "music lovers" with "audiophiles".
Decades back hiss on cassette tapes and wow&flutter on records didn't diminish music appreciation.

Audiophile listeners use dedicated equipment with direct signal paths in a quiet room with no computer involved.
For 99.8% of the target audience, Apple Music, Spotify and all other streaming services, the sound quality far exceeds what any golden ear could distinguish in most ambient noise saturated listening environments.

Many people can't tell the diff between 64kbps SiriusXM and 256kbps Apple Music.
The vast majority of music lovers care about content rather than tech specs.

If HD audio was so important, then services like Tidal wouldn't be failing:
https://www.whathifi.com/news/tidal-in-trouble
https://www.engadget.com/2017/12/13/tidal-jay-z-financial-trouble/

True Audiophiles buy physical media.

Back on topic, Iovine saw a financial opportunity and cashed in, as anyone here would. I personally don't care for AM, but trashing Jimmy coz you have gripes with one of Apple's services is short-sighted and ignores his lifelong achievements.

MR comments resemble youtube comments more each day.

....don't confuse being out-of-touch regarding today's popular music with Dr.Dre working for Apple.

That acquisition gave Apple a healthy headphones business, a popular brand, audio engineers, the second-largest music subscription service, and folks with good connections to the music and film industry.

Was it brilliant? Perhaps not. Worth way more than the price tag? Probably.
Popular brand? Apple acquired Beats at the height of its popularity. Go into a Best Buy now and Beats are just one of many brands featured. Absolutely no one was saying what Apple needed was a headphone business. Also the idea that the company which redefined music with iPod and iTunes couldn’t launch their own streaming music service is laughable. Jimmy Iovine did a snow job on Eddy Cue. Also I think Cook was feeling the pressure to do a big deal. I’m not sad to see Iovine go. Cue needs to go with him.
