Apple Music exec Jimmy Iovine, who works alongside Dr. Dre, Eddy Cue, Robert Kondrk, Trent Reznor and other prominent executives is planning to leave Apple in August, reports Billboard.

The rumor about Iovine's alleged departure from Apple first surfaced on music rumor site Hits Daily Double, but Billboard says its sources have confirmed the news. According to Billboard, Iovine's exit will be timed with the vesting of stock he acquired when first joining Apple.

Iovine joined the Apple Music team back in 2014, when Apple acquired Beats Electronics and the Beats Music streaming service, both of which were co-founded by Iovine and Dr. Dre. Iovine has had a long history with the company, though, first pitching a subscription music service to Steve Jobs in 2003.

Iovine does not have an official title at Apple, but he has been heavily involved in with Apple Music since its 2015 launch and has negotiated many of the streaming deals for the service.

Under Iovine's leadership, Apple music has seen strong growth since its debut, with the service now boasting more than 30 million subscribers.

Should Iovine leave Apple, it's not clear if he would be replaced, nor what his plans are after departing the company.

Bloomberg has confirmed that Jimmy Iovine is planning to leave Apple after he receives the final payout from the Beats Electronics acquisition.

Iovine is unlikely to stay on with the company even if he receives a new offer as his vision has "sometimes clashed" with the views of other executives at the company, including Eddy Cue.

Jimmy does not make a move without the blessing of King David. Could the rumored attempt of Apple acquiring Netflix have something to do with his leaving? Pure speculation but who said reading the tea leaves doesn't make for good entertainment. Disney/Fox, Apple/Netflix.........

Oh, his pockets are full now? Time to jump to the next sucker company, Jimmy. You true worthless quack.

Come on now. I would accuse the one(s) who showered him with money for worthless quackery. Iovine was just doing his job, serving Iovine. But Tim and Eddy?

OMG, hardware has become so lame, i'll give you some examples. Macbook - underpowered with one port, one port! Macbook pro - over priced and USC-c only? how many dongles have you gotten for your over priced laptop.. and how many times have you forgotten those dongles when you need them. Mac Pro - need I say more? Mac Mini - cough cough

Now let's talk about Apple Watch. It's not bad, but not steller, personally I was shocked that the 10k model was discontinued.... ;)

And Iphones/Ipads - are good, I find iOS so limiting, and Siri is the best joke ever! Qi charging that is 5 years behind the rest of the industry is sad.

Air Pods - those were well done. I give it to those engineers, I was very impressed with them. However, I have Bose as I like to have several devices connected at the same time. Something they can't do and a must need feature for me.

Time Capsules - It's become it's own time capsule with ancient hardware.

Home Pod - They couldn't match google home's integration to the web, so they released a half ass eco and made some marking BS about acoustics.

Apple TV - Why wouldn't you get a roku and have 10 times more. Apple TV remote is junk. Looks nice, but just junk.

While Apple's mobile devices are blazing fast (ignoring the whole battery thing), I just can't remember when I have been so disappointed with Apple's hardware. To each their own, but if Tim Cook retired and craig federighi took over, I would be happy.

This.

I've been a sworn techie since I used to fiddle with my dad's Commodore and my best friend's Macintosh.

From phones to computers and from iOS to all things OS X, Tim Cook and Jony Ive have managed to ruin my enjoyment of computers and maybe even gadgetry in general.

Yeah, under Tim Cook Apple has just been totally failing as a company. I mean look at how much they are worth, like practically nothing.

I wish people would stop conflating shareholder pleasing and product quality.

Once again, did they seriously need Dre to make Apple Music?!? I don't recall Spotify or any of the other music services spending $3 billion on a big name to make their (arguably) higher quality applications.

I do recall a certain Tidal that started with a promise as a lossless streaming service and tanked shortly after the celebrity brouhaha. Different cases, sure. But if Spotify and Pandora can stick to their guns and succeed, then definitely so can Apple with their untold stashed bazillions and trillion dollar valuation.

Laughing all the way to the bank, literally...”so long suckers!”.

Embarrassing that a 60-something legend in his own lunchtime former sound engineer was propagated as some sort of “cool, down with the kidz” figure by an excruciatingly uncool and clueless Cook, instead of being jettisoned on acquisition of Beats.

Laughable that he’s being credited with bringing in 30m “subscribers”.

The armchair vibe is strong in this thread.

Yeah I can't compare the Tidal/Aspiro drama with Apple. Jay-Z bought Aspiro/Tidal, and Apple bought Dre/Iovine.

You have to admit, though, Pandora and Spotify were, if not pioneers, early to the game...while Apple followed their coattails and had a much easier time getting their product into consumer's hands (it comes on the phone!). I recall reading articles saying Spotify is/was in the red, but how much is Apple making on its music service? Has Apple made enough on it to replete the coffers that had $3 billion more prior to Dre? (and yeah I know, $3 billion to Apple is about as valuable as the $20 bill in my pocket is to me).

Fair, but the latter is hard to measure. One approach Tim purportedly likes to take is customer satisfaction surveys.

I'd say "success hides problems" may a real thing Apple has been suffering from. I just don't see it very black and white.

Financially, it isn't clear yet if Spotify is "succeeding". Odds are they'll be acquired sooner or later.

As for Pandora, it's neither financially doing well nor is it particular big.

If you look at money and profit margins, stocks etc, Apple is doing great.

In every interview I've seen or read of him, he seemed to have a real passion for what he was doing. That, to me, made him seem like a good fit with Apple. I'm wondering if he felt he had nothing left to contribute at Apple. Maybe he and Cue weren't seeing eye to eye. It does seem odd timing since Apple Music still has a ways to go to catch Spotify. I figured that he would leave once Apple Music solidified its place as the number one streaming service, not as a runner-up.
Timing is not at all surprising. He had a lock in period and his stock vests so he can sell and move on. Obviously a financial decision.

Nothing like riding the wave of inevitable success. I could head up a new Apple dating site and the strength of the brand alone would make it a success.

There's a guy at my company who thinks he's a genius because he happened to be heading up the tiny mobile department when smart phones took off, he went from managing 1/1000th of our business (WAP/Java games) to over 50% (iOS and Android) over three years simply by being in the right place at the right time. It would have been more of an achievement for him to have not had growth :)

It no longer seems to be sufficient to merely not buy/subscribe/use a product or service that you either don't like or prefer a competing offering, one now has to go online and proclaim their preference/dissatisfaction/hate over and over again in the loudest possible terms.

It's almost as if it is all some sort of zero sum game. One cannot truly enjoy their Spotify subscription/Galaxy S8/Pixel 2 without needing someone, somewhere to feel bad about their Apple Music subscription/iPhone 8 or X purchase. Personally I have no love at all for Beats headphones and have my own strong, alternative preference. However if people are enjoying their Beats headphones purchases, more power to them. I don't need them to feel bad about their Beats purchases for me to feel good about my own choice in headphones.

Despite being a certified dadrock/classical/metal/punk lover and most definitely not the kind of listener represented at all of the Apple Music advertising and keynote spots, I absolutely ADORE my AM subscription via my iPhone, iPad Pro, Sonos & Carplay. Could the interface and experience be refined to my tastes? Sure. Is my AM family subscription the best value outlay each month that also includes Netflix, Prime, NowTV etc? Absolutely. I feel like I have unfettered access to my local HMV & iTunes Store, feel to play and sync whatever I like whenever I like. Teenage me would have regarded Spotify for AM as the domain of some sort of utopian science fiction. Heck, 45yo me still finds it all pretty neat!

I've no idea whether Iovine's mooted departure represents a net loss or gain for my AM usage and prospects. As such I'll refrain from the general hating on AM/Cue/Iovine/Beats.

These threads really can get toxic as of late.

I find it a good thing

Besides his music connections I'm not really sure what he brought to the table.
The beats brand needs to be killed (probably when he leaves)
When I read his interviews, I thought what the f are you brabbling about?
no one is listening to dad rock, I'm sorry.

And most important of all
there's so much music still not on apple music. If there was one thing to be bought 2 years ago it should have been soundcloud.

If true, that's a shame. Iovine knows more than most anyone else about the dynamics and mechanics of the music industry, with a track record that speaks volumes.

Yet the uniformed will trash him for not being a good fit or a good look. So juvenile. Jeeez...

Totally agree. People trashing Jimmy but what was before his arrival? iTunes Radio anyone? How quickly people forget!

Meaning Jimmy had real vision - sounds like the 'other' just wanted to make money - as much as possible and fast from his 'punters'.

Tragic! Maybe Jimmy will join Spotify or turnaround Tidel??? What he does, it'll be great!

Goodbye Iovine, you will not be missed.
It took 2+ years but it's a good thing Apple realized their mistake and fired him.
He's not getting fired, once he gets his last payout he's walking away, and doing so a very rich man. This is his decision, not Apple's.
