This is so dUMB. They better put it in the TV app and make a new subscription called "apple entertainment" Or something and have that include music and Tv. Make it more like amazon prime... or just BUY NETFLIX.

Apple you make computers !!! Or used to.

You have massive egos in the company , with no one regining them in. The Beats guys could care less about apple, they are just expanding their influence and personal status.

Forget pop culture , worry about the culture within apple. You are moving away from engineers to too cool for school crowd.
A lot of people have been saying Apple needs to get in the content business. CNBC's Jim Cramer has said many times Apple should buy Netflix. Hardware is not where it's at especially when computers these days are getting to the point where the improvements are incremental at best and upgrade cycles are much longer. VR is niche and really good AR isn't ready for prime time yet. I do think if Apple goes down this path they need make the content business its own semi-siloed entity and the content needs to be available on all platforms. And if it's something that would finally force Tim Cook bring someone else in to run all of Apple's cloud and AI services that would be a great thing. That is not Eddy Cue's forté and Apple is behind the competition in this space. However if this is just another thing added to Cue's already way too full plate it will be a failure like Ping and Connect were/are.

So are these new shows going to be available for rental or purchase alongside existing iTunes content, or only via AM subscription?

Ping written all over it.....

Apple needs to stay away from media other than music delivery. Other companies were there first and are handling it a LOT better than Apple could ever imagine. Apple has no chance to put a dent into Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime. The only way they may be able to make headway is in a TV service since nobody got it right, yet. The pricing isn't advantageous over a cable subscription sans cable box fees, and the delivery isn't as rock solid as it should be.

Netflix doesn't have anything revolutionary other than content deals. All Apple needs is to work on content deals and they will have an immediate netflix competitor. If they can keep the same or lower price point it will be a home run. Original content is gravy, its a good way to make people stay with your service but not necessarily a good way to get people to sign up and therefore isn't really needed at launch in great quantities as long as they can get it out during a free trial period

Oh gosh please, please, please stop.

Whilst the Mac line-up is suffering, operating systems being severely neglected, AirPod stock is non-existent, etc...

Their sights are targeted at Carpool Karaoke, developers version of X-Factor with Gweneth Platrow, and whatever other loads of junk entertainment these guys are Cooking up to conform to Emoji culture to stay "hip"...

(Also their failed car project, can't wait, uh & Siri in a living room box!)

Steve's legacy everybody, right here.
Great post, dead-on. Tim Cook's Apple continues to devolve into a parody of itself.

It keeps getting more ridiculous. I can barely find existing things I'm actually searching for in the app store or itunes store. Instead Apple pushes all sorts of garbage content.

Apple doesn't just want to force you to be stuck with non-upgradeable hardware, they also want you trapped into non-upgradeable culture.

Yech!!

I remember a great MTV commercial:
M-T-blah blah-blah tele-blah

I'll pass on Apple's vision of this. They seem to be ruining one thing after another to become a one trick fashion show.

At this point, with all the bloat, I'm just going back to buying records again. No clutter. No paying for music I don't care about. Just an album physically in my hand which I own forever here and there. It's better that way anyway because I actually appreciate it and don't move on to the next thing like a kid with ADD.

I laughed when Steve introduced PING and faked to be excited about it. Even now, I never get or didn't get why I should bother anybody with what I am listening to or watching, let alone forward an accomplishment of a game score.

But then, I guess that's what todays generation does.

Apple MEDIA or whatever they would call it , is a logical extension of their streaming business.
Whether they then buy Netflix or somebody or create content themselves is secondary.

Who runs it will be decided when they go forward with the project.

Viewing habits have changed so drastically that people want to watch stuff when they have time or decide to do so wherever they want on on whatever they want. May not even be a TV , monitor etc.

Only live fixed time events like sports require a viewer to watch at that time.

Let's not be narrow minded and pretend all the software engineers or hardware designers are part of that division. It all gets done eventually, but unfortunately not always good (2016 MBP)

One can only hope that in the process they fix the mess iTunes has become. Maybe even call that iMedia
and make a mediaOS.

I don't really know why, but I always worry when Apple does stuff like this. I guess it's because it isn't something you'd usually associate with them

You worry because Apple moves farther and farther from being Apple, as opposed to becoming a faceless media/services/fashion/lifestyle enterprise. Remember when they made computers? It gets harder and harder all the time.
Apple Watch was the death knell. It's only a matter of time now.

"If South Park walks into my office, I am not going to say you're not musicians, you know?" Iovine continued when pressed about the report.

Seems an odd thing to say about South Park bearing in mind Matt & Trey wrote award-winning musical "The Book of Mormon" and the South Park film from 1999 was full of songs (of which one, "Blame Canada", was nominated for an Academy Award). I get what he means but an odd choice out of nearly every other TV show that isn't written by award winning musicians...

Apple, I'm begging you, please spin the content section/folks into a separate subsidiary - before the company is corrupted. You can't serve two masters and the content angle is very different from making hardware, giving people privacy and a great experience.

Pretty easy to change the name to Apple Studios or something.

Love you're idea. Apple should do this, make it externalized. Otherwise, as the importance and power of the content section of the company grows (and its been growing), it'll shift Apple's focus from a great experience (we're already seeing issues with that on a number of levels, not necessarily content related) to one where protecting the security of "their" content IP assumes greater and greater importance (the downside of that is huge, one being the U.S. govt becomes their best friend in protecting content IP).

Content isn't enough, has to be good content.

From what we've heard of Vital Signs, sounds like content worth missing.

YMMV.

Also, Apple need to rebrand / rename Apple Music. Its going to look odd with ( non music ) TV content and Music subscription, and keep calling it "Apple Music".

Netflix doesn't have anything revolutionary other than content deals.

Netflix creates its own content, and a lot of it is pretty good too.

And yet there will be people saying that Apple invented the "entire POP Cultural Experience".

Long Live MTV!
Nah you got it wrong completely. Folks will say Apple invented phones, the music and the United States of Murica. Apple smoking too much of them trees these days.

The landscape is so full of these independent content programs that it makes it so very difficult to follow. And then to find out in order to watch the hottest new one you have to pay a subscription to a different service is a pain. I've yet to hear about a 'show' and say, oh yeah, that's worth another $6 a month for me to sign up.

I just finished the entire first season of "Berlin Station" on Epixs. Free (it's available that way). I'll just keep that up for awhile.
