i find it hilarious the people most "vocal" about this issue and vowing to "return their phones" are all newbies. that says a lot.

trolls.

Are you serious. Newbies (on here anyway) are the type of people Apple is marketing to. Of course the "non-newbies" aren't complaining...they are the mac-lemmings that would buy a POS if it only had an apple logo on it. Come on, I'm a newbie, I love "most" things Apple, but with the amount of press this is generating even a 3 year old knows this is not a "non-issue."

Again, People are forgetting something important here. All other phones lose a few bars when held, the iPhone 4 can magically go from 5 bars to No Service when holding it. This never happens on any other phone. And if you are shorting out the antenna, its a design flaw. Your not blocking signal, but shorting the antenna losing signal.

I can't believe people are dismissing this as a small issue and are ready to spend more money to cover Apple/Steve Job's lazy ass.

Really?

What ever happened to "You don't have to change yourself to fit the product, it fits you."-Jony Ive- iPad video.:confused::confused:

what about if you don't have a right arm ?

is this now discrimination towards the disabled or war wounded
i thought they made this phone to be more user friendly towards people
not haven great vision and other such stuff

Pathetic reply by steve jobs and this has been forwarded to the UK Watchdog team at BBC and the BBC news tech desk who have already started a story on it

The thing that really ticks me off about Steve and the 4 is all the compatible MUSIC Related devices that was made for the 3 is now useless on the 4 with the new pinouts.

mics, audio inputs, etc. Devs I talked to didn't even see this coming. Some had soon to be released hardware that they was working on for moths.
Music heads are pissed. The 3GS Just went up in value, and I would not sell it for cheap if I were you..

Yes because the number of posts a person makes on here means they are more of a fan. Get over yourself. There's a problem here and Apple most likely knowingly knew about it.

no it means they know more about what they are talking about.

i never really read anything from newbie or regular (like you) unless they are trolling to which I point them out. You got to prove yourself (spend some time reading and posting) before people start to take you serious. I am not the only one who thinks and does this.

Why is Apple sending me a replacement when I described, in great detail, the problem that they just addressed. Why were two levels of support interested in the problem and not once did they mention the way I hold the phone.

If this really is Apples' stance, then they would have told me so and sent me a new phone.

I described the problem to a T and not once did they think that this was something that should happen.

I had wondered the same thing. If this has always happened, but we're only noticing it more now because we're aware of the new antenna?

Exactly, I don't know the word for it when someone complains about something when they realize it's there, but when it's been hidden under their noses for the last 2-3 years, they don't... I dunno. All I can say is if people are seriously thinking of sending their iPhone 4 back, all I have to say to you is... try to replicate the same thing on an older iPhone 3g or 3gs. I could be wrong, but I have seen iPhones in real life (mine+my mate's) and even videos which show the same problem in older iPhone models. :apple: :)

So its ok that my iPhone 4 to have 1 bar while the iPhone 3GS next to it have 3 bars???

+ 1. All the noobs here cannot point out a single other phone that is reduced to NO SERVICE when simply put in the palm of somebody hand (no force even required).

Go ahead, Apple apologists. Show me one phone with proof.

What's that? You can't? That's what I thought.

All cell phones have sensitive areas that shouldn't be gripped says Jobs?. So they put the MOST sensitive area in the place that is the MOST gripped?

Come on! This can't be for real...

Oops. If using the "bumper" and still holding it the same way otherwise fixes the problem, then I think the problem is that the antenna is electrically exposed, not that the skin and bones is the reason for signal blocking, because the bumper can't take away the effect of reduced signal due to flesh absorption. You have those small gaps, and if you bridge them with your hands, the sweat and oils with the short gap might change the tuning of the antennas by crossing it with other pieces of metal. I think some people might not be so affected if they are in 850MHz area, but if you're in the 1800MHz or whatever AT&T's higher frequency is, it might be a real problem that's worse than other phones because most phone antennas aren't electrically exposed like that.

I don't recall specific holds affecting my reception, but I've only owned three models of phones in my life.

seriously, who wraps their hands around the phone like that when using it? I basically use my thumb and middle finger to hold the phone and my pointer finger on the back to hold it to my head. And even then i'm holding it by the bottom part of the phone and not the sides. some people really look for anything to complain about.

Can you show a picture or diagram of how you hold it? The way you describe your hold technique sounds more awkward than the hold shown in the Jobs picture.

BTW - and yes, I'm being snarky here. And NOT that I really care - because I don't. But I find it interesting that people took potshots at me for posting and cried BS and never bothered to apologize or anything remote. This "community" is lacking is some aspects of community.

That's unfortunate, arn's vouched for you. If that's not enough, then those people should not be here, if you don't trust arn, then why read his site?

sure am serious. when people have an axe to grind they come on here...sign up...troll all over the place..and then go back to the cave. happens whenever something like this happens. give it time and people will learn this is NOT a big deal.

So, none of this was AT&T's fault?

want a replacement

sorry, not a newbie, my signal goes from 4 bars to no svc, when I pick up the phone. My friend has a new phone on the way from apple service. I will too tomorrow (hopefully). Apple is still scheduling personalized service calls (at your convenience)!

A phone not working when you hold it in a certain way isn't a big deal?

I think that's a big deal, since a phone is designed to be held.

I find it funny how the Apple fanboys were bashing the Nexus One when it had connectivity issues, and now the new iPhone has a connection issue. Then the Apple fanboys say its a small issue, and you can pay $30 to fix a design flaw. This is certainly not normal for a phone. I'm not an Apple fanboy or an Android fanboy. I do own quit a few Apple products though.

And so the fall begins

As my 3GS also does this I was really hoping it was the new software. If this is really Apples final response this it is probably a good time to sell Apple stock if you have it. This will get out to the mainstream press, and between this and the controversy over flash and iAds and other app store issues, the government investigating, stories about Apple losing it's "cool" and so on I think you may see a major drop. There has always been Apple haters, but Apple is the big kid on the block now. It's inevitable that at some point there would be a backlash and this may be what kicks it into high gear. I bet Google is happy right now.

Or..... a software update comes out soon which solves the problem(or at least makes it better) and all is magical again.

So its ok that my iPhone 4 to have 1 bar while the iPhone 3GS next to it have 3 bars???
Yes, I believe it's called poetic justice.
A prototype iPhone was lost in a bar, and now the iPhone itself is losing bars.
