dont know how you guys hold your phone but this is my natural hand position when i'm making a phone call. i don't see these reception issues.

Your death vice grips are not a natural way of holding the phone while on a call

That's weird. Most people hold the phone in their hand. Specifically, with the bottom cradled in their palm.

You guys have it wrong. I'm left-handed. You hold the iPhone in your right hand so you can use your left hand to point and tap. So it's not a problem for lefties after all.

I also tried it in my right hand to recreate the problem. It is literally not an issue to slide your hand up slightly so that you aren't touching across the band.

Also, my iPhone doesn't seem to have the issue anyway. Could just be that I'm holding it right. :)

It's as Jobs said, it's a non-issue.

werd, I'm right handed and hold it in my left hand. no issues.

You look like a.. nevermind. Lots and LOTS of people hold their phones in their palms. It's like the NATURAL way to do it. Hello? A corner always rests in your palm - left or right handed. How do you think people navigate their iphones single handed then? They use 2 hands all the time? Really?

if i gripped my phone like that my wrist would be in a funny angle in relation to my face. It's just not ergonomic to me. It's more so to keep my wrist straight.

Look at the noob who joined this month talk about noob iPhone owners. I have had all of the iPhones since the 2g on day 1 of launch and this is by far the most disappointing product Apple has released since Steve took over.

I have had no real reason to join this site until now..
I love all apple products.. have many.. just don't find the need to talk about it until now, because I have been highly excited about this release, thought it would be fun. LOVE this product.

I'm a grown-ass man and I'm not about to adopt some queer new way of holding my phone. This is completely cocked.

The solution is actually quite straightforward.
There needs to be an insulator around the antenna. A layer of plastic.
But this is a major change to the phone.

I don't see how Apple can easily get out of this one.

Very Illuminating

The iPhone 4 hasn't come to Canada yet, but when it does, I will buy one and thanks to this thread, I will get a colourful Bumper, so I won't have this problem. My only hesitancy is which of the three legal iPhone carriers up here will I use? Perhaps I will get the unlocked one and chose the carrier with the cheapest Pay as you Go rates for data.

This IS a non-issue. the 3gs bars were horrible, i4 is better, some idiot posts a you tube video and it blows up because of haters and rookie iPhone owners, go get a droid you posers
Well, you see... the difference between this particular story and a handful of whiners complaining about some minor issue, is that the latter doesn't get picked up by CNN, NY Times, Wired, BBC. This is *not* your run-of-the-mill case of gratuitous whining. This story is real, it's big and it's surprising a lot of people, which is why it's gaining such traction. A phone whose signal is not slightly diminished but actually disappears when you touch the phone, and a CEO that dismisses this as a non-issue and tells people to hold it differently...? Come on, if you don't understand why that's a big deal, you need to get out more.

love the fanboy defense replies! :D

"Dude, it's no problem, I just adjusted how I hold my phone... it's like Steve said: non-issue!" Steve/Apple can do no wrong, ever!

This, and the shattered iPhone that fell out of a guys pocket while he was sitting down aren't "non-issues"... they're serious problems. The phone hasn't even been out for a week.

I have always held it like you do

They might have realized that too late into production. So they decided to roll out the bumpers. Just my theory.

I've heard about "fanboys" before but never understood it until now. An obvious problem and they are acting as if nothing happened.

My grip is similar and I rarely rest it against my palm (right hander but use my left hand for my phone).

If that's truly Steve Jobs response then I've lost a little bit of respect for Apple as a company:mad:

If this was a Windows or Android phone then these board would be chomping on them like mad.

It really could be a software issue

Yeah, seriously, interesting solution. I guess they knew of this issue but don't think it is that much of a big deal and they may know/think it is realted to the iOS4 issue and know it will be fixed or improved with an update?

At first I was getting concerned about this issue, but after reading many posts about it, I came across one which makes me believe this is, in fact, a fixable software issue.

You see, since the OS can selectively turn off the different antennas, it just needs to know to turn off the section of the antenna and the frequencies that are currently not in use. For example, if a person is making a 3G call, then the OS can automatically turn off wi-fi until the call is completed, etc.

true.....but I'm 6'4", I've got large hands - my pinky and ring finger rest against the left side and I hold my phone very similar to you....

Three point touch is not how I see people holding their phone in the street. That is just ridiculous.

Serious apple fan here but am stunned at the "dont hold it that way response".

However I normally hold my phone along the sides rather than cupped in my palm - wonder if that would be different.

This is a real shame for the buyer that are affected and the product as a whole :(

...snip... I get about 90% signal loss. Meaning, as what is happening already, I'm missing calls! Why, because 90% signal loss, if you're not getting 100% signal strength means you have NO SIGNAL at all. I've missed several calls already. ...snip...

Oh the irony. When writing this original message I was sitting on my back porch with my iphone on the table and my computer typing away. I had to go pick up dinner. While waiting in line I looked at my phone, I missed a call! When, as I was typing the original message! Again, no vibe, nothing! :(

Worst part. I tried to call back, I had 2 bars showing on my phone. First attempt it went through and then 30 seconds in, dropped. Next attempt, wouldn't dial out. Next attempt, dropped 30 seconds in. Next attempt, dropped 30 seconds in. Next attempt, had no problem at all; BECAUSE I SWITCHED TO A LAND LINE.

Something is borked, my wife never gets dropped and she can be standing right next to me! I need to contact AT&T tomorrow and figure out what is going on.
