phone call usage

The top picture still has full bars because your phone is not dug into your palms far enough. You skin is below the seam, so you don't short it out. But the top picture looks like a natural way to hold a phone.

Like I wrote earlier - the fact that it occurs on any or every phone doesn't make it a non-issue as Steve suggested. His answer to me (the first one) was poorly written. His followup was "better." He shouldn't have called it a non-issue. It is an issue with his phone and others. That doesn't excuse Apple just because everyone else has the issue. I didn't buy another phone or I would have emailed THAT CEO about the issue. And if I had another brand phone - I wouldn't accept that response from that CEO either

And if you look at other phones, they don't go from 5 bars to 0, they go from 5 to 3 or 2. You can still use the phone, unlike the iphone.

What a joke. Regardless of what almighty steve says, I've never heard of any other cellphone where you had to use a case with it in order to make or receive calls. What a ridiculous response.

dont know how you guys hold your phone but this is my natural hand position when i'm making a phone call. i don't see these reception issues.

Your death vice grips are not a natural way of holding the phone while on a call

That's pretty close to how I hold my iphone, don't know why

Still looks like it may be a design flaw.

The irony is most people, now conscious of the issue, will end up holding their phone differently now anyway.

This changes everything. Again.

Flat on my table my 3G gets the following on the speedtest app.

532 down

212 up

In a death grip, (holding only the bottom and holding it tight)

120 down

51 up

Holding it like below, though more snuggly in my palm.

147 down

210 up

At no point did I lost any bars or 3G connection, the data rate just plummeted.

You are telling me we have resorted to pictures of how we hold our phones to get them to work? Are we going to get an official Apple photo instruction? I'm not sure I can figure out this crazy new technology on my own....

Someone mentioned earlier that buying a bumper was a "band-aid solution" and... well.. I couldn't help but think of this:

Whatever works! I was being sarcastic but it seems to do a decent job and better yet the band-aid peels off without leaving bunch of sticky crap all over the phone.

I am going to the genius bar tomorrow to see the proper way to hold an iPhone 4, I'll get it on video.

The situation at this point is as follows:

1) There is an acknowledged RF interference issue.
2) It appears to be directly related to the hardware.
3) Apple doesn't consider it a problem.

So, based on that, you really only have two options:

1) Keep your phone and deal with the problem.
Eg. Hold it differently, buy a bumper, case, tape it, put nail varnish on it, etc.

OR

2) Return it and get another phone.

It's possible that Apple might be able to somewhat alleviate issue through a software fix, but who knows. What's fairly certain is that there is NOT going to be any hardware recall.

Perhaps, if a software fix doesn't prove helpful, they might try coating the antenna with something. However, this probably won't be until a second batch comes from manufacturing. That's my take on the situation.

It is difficult to think Apple knew of this big and embarrassing problem and shipped it anyway.

Does it look like the antenna has a clear coating on it? Perhaps it is too thin due to a manufacturing problem and not enough quality testing at the plant.

It sure seems that the only reasonable solution is to design a non-conductive band that slips over the existing antenna so it can be done at Apple Stores along with a financial incentive of some sort for your trouble.

Clearly, the unit will have to be re-designed and exchanged for those who will not accept a repair. Apple can sell them as refurbs.

This is complete bs no other way to say it.

*edit*

I really believe apple knew of this problem and came up with the "bumpers" as a fix well before release.

Hey Guys wait for the next iOS upgrade with changes in the signal meter formula :)

Iphone 4 full meter signal in all USA (Next iOS upgrade) :)

At&t will be very happy with Apple.

You've never heard of the iPhone 3GS? It does the same thing. People, let it go. Cancer is serious, this is but a mild curiosity.

Uhh yes you are, mos people don't hold it so daintily with two fingers caressing the sides, most have a death grip to not drop the thing if hit or really to get a good grasp on the phone.. I would go as far to say that 99.5% of people hold the phone in their palms like so (moved index finger slightly to take photo)
hold.jpg

you guys litterally are arguing that its an okay design flaw??? you hold it wierd its your fault... :p you have got to be kidding me!! this coming from apples "it just works" theory, and making a phone that doesnt make calls.. brilliant!

+1

regardless if they recognized this as a potential issue, seriously, how is steve jobs/apple supposed to react?

admitting that this is a major flaw, which it is, would mean that they had to change the iphone.
APPLE CHANGING THEIR MAJOR DEVICE DUE TO DUMBASS ENGINEERING???? HELLOOOO??? baaaaad karma for steve!

this way, only techblog readers moan.

I hardly ever see someone hold a phone like that
