regardless if they recognized this as a potential issue, seriously, how is steve jobs/apple supposed to react?

admitting that this is a major flaw, which it is, would mean that they had to change the iphone.
APPLE CHANGING THEIR MAJOR DEVICE DUE TO DUMBASS ENGINEERING???? HELLOOOO??? baaaaad karma for steve!

this way, only techblog readers moan.

I'm thinking that front page of the Ny Times is going to guarantee that techblog readers are not going to be the only ones that read about it.

Oh the irony. When writing this original message I was sitting on my back porch with my iphone on the table and my computer typing away. I had to go pick up dinner. While waiting in line I looked at my phone, I missed a call! When, as I was typing the original message! Again, no vibe, nothing! :(

Worst part. I tried to call back, I had 2 bars showing on my phone. First attempt it went through and then 30 seconds in, dropped. Next attempt, wouldn't dial out. Next attempt, dropped 30 seconds in. Next attempt, dropped 30 seconds in. Next attempt, had no problem at all; BECAUSE I SWITCHED TO A LAND LINE.

Something is borked, my wife never gets dropped and she can be standing right next to me! I need to contact AT&T tomorrow and figure out what is going on.

DAMN IT!!!! IT DID IT AGAIN! This time I was HOLDING THE PHONE, seeing if I can make my bars go up and down. It was NOT ON VIBRATE, and the phone did not ring, did not indicate anything except, I got the "Voicemail" popup!

I am quite unhappy right now. I'm considering resetting the phone back to defaults and starting from scratch to see if that fixes anything.

I just got off the phone with Apple iPhone support. I was told to change the way I hold my phone, or to deal with the issue by a low level peon. Like hell. I owned both the original iPhone and an iPhone 3G, and I never had problems remotely similar to this on those two phones. This is absolutely ridiculous. After I finished screaming at a senior support representative, about how ridiculous this is, and throwing the words FTC and complaint into the mix, I was promised to be called by a senior customer support representative within the next 48 hours. We'll see what happens...

Apple better fix this. This is absolutely asinine. I always had five bars on my iPhone, and on my 3G, no matter where I held the phone. But in the first 12 hours of using my iPhone 4, I have dropped 10 calls due to signal loss, and I have been basically unable to use the internet unless I hold my phone in a completely awkward position. No normal phone loses a signal just because of where you hold it. If I let go of the phone, I go back to full signal strength.

Total BS, and SJ's comments are just retarded. He needs to get over himself!

Oh... and the proper response for Steve 'let them eat cake' Jobs should have been:

'Aware of the internet reports about this. Looking into it."

Uhh yes you are, mos people don't hold it so daintily with two fingers caressing the sides, most have a death grip to not drop the thing if hit or really to get a good grasp on the phone.. I would go as far to say that 99.5% of people hold the phone in their palms like so (moved index finger slightly to take photo)

you guys litterally are arguing that its an okay design flaw??? you hold it wierd its your fault... :p you have got to be kidding me!! this coming from apples "it just works" theory, and making a phone that doesnt make calls.. brilliant!

I'm right handed, but that's no better - I usually hold my iphone in my left so I can operate it with my right. Telling us to hold it like this is unacceptable, and I won't buy an iphone 4 if this can't be made right. I'm very happy with my 3GS on iOS 4 and will gladly stick with that for now.

Deep breath in 3... 2... 1...

Hmm, I fiddled around with my 3G and realized that even though I'm a leftie, this is only a potential issue when I'm holding the phone in my right hand.

I have long-ass fingers, not quite like Sir Michael Gambon but almost. When I'm doing something that doesn't require a lot of typing, the phone rests on my fingers (not touching the palm) and I operate the screen with my thumb.

When I make calls I hold the phone in my left hand by the edges, with the thumb approximately on the middle (way above where the seam would be on an iPhone 4).

But when I'm typing something like a mail or SMS, I hold the phone with my right hand and type with my left. In this position my right pinky and ring finger are where the seam would be.

Someone mentioned earlier that buying a bumper was a "band-aid solution" and... well.. I couldn't help but think of this:

Whatever works! I was being sarcastic but it seems to do a decent job and better yet the band-aid peels off without leaving bunch of sticky crap all over the phone.

Good advise from the doctor!

This kinda stuff bugs me.. when people sit at home all day and try to find something wrong with it. Seriously if your mad about this answer me this. When will you ever hold your phone like this.... NEVER. If you hold it like a normal person (no offense to the handicapped) then you will be fine. instead of trying to find defects just enjoy this amazing product. I know I do...

This stuff kind of bugs me...when people sit on a forum anonymously and suggest that they know better than other users do....

I always use my left hand to hold my phone and, based on the way I hold it, this is almost ALWAYS an issue for me. Thankfully most of my browsing and other app usage is done in a wifi area 90+% of the time, but that doesn't help me for calls. To say that we're trying to find defects is ludicrous. this is a major design flaw and it affects real users who are trying to use the product in a normal way for its intended usage. This defect isn't contrived. Therefore, I cannot stand the flippant response that Jobs gave to this initially. I was more than willing to give Apple the benefit of the doubt on making bumpers for this phone after never producing a case for previous models, but now I'm beginning to see the point from the conspiracy guys who think that the bumpers were a planned response to profit off of this defect.

That being said, I'm not taking the phone back. I love everything else about it, but I'm PO'd that I was essentially forced to get a bumper today. I was not planning to get a case, but after testing a co-workers phone before I picked up mine, I knew that I couldn't go without some sort of layer between my hand and the antennae.

So you really think everyone else that is reporting the same problem is just faking and imagining it, including myself?

Ive tested it over and over, and not only do the bars drop when I touch the lower left corner, but I tried to make a call to the phone and it does not ring...ends up going to voicemail on the phone Im calling. Taking my finger off that spot and waiting 15 seconds, then calling again, the call goes through just fine.

You're saying Im just jumping off a cliff following the rest?

No one said you were imagining it, but you are jumping off the cliff by complaining about something that has been proven to be an issue with most cell phones. You've admitted that it is only a problem when touching the lower left portion of the phone, so don't touch the lower left. Or buy the bumper and get over it. There are many REAL problems in the world you could be bitching about.

After all these years Jobs always came across as a very friendly person, but now since Apple is the new Microsoft on the Market, he seems to be very arrogant.

And with those answers he just showed us how arrogant he became :(

UPDATE: Called Apple Tech Support. Clearly a known issue. I didn't call to complain or demand or even ask for anything - I called to let them know that I, too was experiencing this "non-issue."

They offered up a free bumper for my troubles.

But here's the "kicker." Before they send me my free bumper - they are requesting I sign something legal (not sure what it is yet as it's going to be emailed to me in the next 24-48 hours) that I would need to sign..

Now - I have no idea what's in the paperwork. And nothing against Apple who is at least trying to do something. But I don't think I'm inclined to accept their free gift if it means signing away any ability to take other recourse if in the future there's a recall/suit/etc.

Perhaps paranoid - but I would imagine the paperwork to be signed says something to the effect that the matter has been "resolved." as far as both parties are concerned.

Will let you know when I get the email/document.

Are you serious. Newbies (on here anyway) are the type of people Apple is marketing to. Of course the "non-newbies" aren't complaining...they are the mac-lemmings that would buy a POS if it only had an apple logo on it. Come on, I'm a newbie, I love "most" things Apple, but with the amount of press this is generating even a 3 year old knows this is not a "non-issue."

Thoughtful and makes sense.

my signal isn't great around where i live and when i pick the phone up i lose signal just from holding it in my hand
i put it down in front of me and it comes back on.

I have officially bought an ipod touch 4

And to make my absolutely awesome purchase complete, I have those yellow marks on my screen that people were talking about yesterday. This piece of s*** is going back to the AT&T Store tomorrow and I'll be taking my ass over to Verizon or Sprint right after that. I'm going to get something with a little Android logo on it.

@ samcraig

Are you serious? Apple just gets worse and worse... I guess Apple finally figured out that their bad days are over and now they act like Microsoft did when Vista got released.
