No, you're just using the occasion to be a dick about it.

The context isn't completely clear, it could have been back seat or passenger's side.

The word suggested the right meaning if you wanted to assume behind the driver or next to the driver. Keep it coming.

I still can't get it to drop below 4 bars even though Speedtest slows down a bit.

Can someone please come over here and show me how to properly lose signal with my iPhone 4?

There are more than enough video tutorials on youtube if you care to search

Most people would prefer to not use a case at all. Cellphone cases were barely on the map before the iPhone, I mean... the only people I saw using cases for their Nokia/Samsung/Motorola phones were construction workers and IT geeks carrying their phones in a belt clip.

With previous iPhone models (particularly the plastic 3G and 3GS) people used cases because they realized that wear and tear were potential issues. The chrome bezel is fairly sensitive and the back is easy to scratch.

But the iPhone 4G is all stainless steel and glass and advertised as rugged and scratch-resistant, front and back. Apple themselves released a 'bumper' that only protects the stainless steel part, not the front or back, which indicates that they feel those are too scratch resistant to warrant protection.

It's just semantics, change "bumpers" to "antennae". :)

Did you even read the original post? The guy doesn't know the usage of the word pillion and you're backing him. World of ignorants is nice to be around.

Dude, nobody's backing the OP. We're backing the REAL issue of the reception. Thanks for your input tho, very constructive. Or is it constructing??!!

people.. this happens with many phones. Apple is just the start of it. I have an iPhone 4, and the problem isnt as dramatic as said to be. I have to hold the phone REALLY tightly for the signal to drop. It really does not affect the signal if you hold it normally in your left or right hand. But my hands arent sweaty, and "conductive". I am pretty sure the people in some of these videos may have sweaty hands...
It's dramatic if your signal already is pretty bad. And we're talking about AT&T, so that means a bunch of us. Glad you're in a high signal area, Minister of Information.

I understand the philosophical argument, but practically, most people use cases. Just look at the wall of cases in an apple store. I suspect that the "naked iPhone" contingent on this board is a small but (very) vocal group. You need to buy Bluetooth devices to use the Bluetooth functionality, you need to buy a wifi router to use facetime, you need to buy screen protectors to avoid screen scratches, etc. Again, IF a case solves the problem, it probably won't be a big deal for apple in the long run.

Wifi is something most people probably have already. The screen is pretty durable, I don't use a screen protector, some scratches after a couple years, pretty faint and the whole phone is getting tired anyway, due for a replacement. You don't have to have Bluetooth to place a call. But you have to have a case to make sure your call goes through reliably without an (IMO) awkward baseball pitcher's style hand hold?

But it sounds like the original complaint is being addressed, the one user is not experiencing the same problem with a replacement, hopefully it's just a small percentage.

Sorry about the side tracking. It was regarding some guy who didn't know wtf is pillion.

Anyways, I have one question to all the fans who are STILLLLLLLL defending Apple for this reception issue (even after Apple has acknowledged) the problem. The way fanboys are going "well return it if you don't like it", are you fanboys going to refund everybody's restocking fees?

I was half joking. Thing is, I can even short the seams with a wire and it doesn't drop below 4 bars - and even then it only flickers down to 4 before coming back to 5. However, this might be because signal strength near my home is incredible. I'll need to try tomorrow from work.

if you see a stylus, they blew it ....

if you need a bumper to make it work ... THEY BLEW IT !!!

well, get a bumper case... isnt an iphone (with a bumper case) still better than any other phone?

Apple claims to be innovators, but yet their engineers don't even understand the basic ***** rules of electricity. Metal conducts electricity, and so does the human hand. Putting the antenna on the OUTSIDE of the phone in an area that everyone is obviously going to touch is RETARDED. Not only is this bad for interfering with the signal, but it's also REALLY bad for your body to have that electricity touching your body. I know it's a very small amount, but imagine all the iphone users with cancer. It's going to be awesome. But then again, eating today's food supply and drinking the water we will all soon have to drink will probably make the radiation received from these shiny new iphones feel like peanuts.

Just a thought...and I don't have the iPhone 4 yet so this is pure speculation.

But it seems to be happening more often when people are in lower-signal strength areas, such as inside their home rather than outside...

Isn't part of the new design that the phone selects cell towers that have the least strain, rather than the closest (and strongest) signal?

Perhaps by laying the iPhone flat on a table, for instance, it reads a signal from one tower, and by touching it and allowing your body to affect the antenna, it reads a different tower?

Perhaps this could be a software fix if that is the case and just make it work like every other previous iPhone model.

People losing their minds....

I tested Steve's theory on my 3GS and he's was right on the money. If I cover my 3GS on the top left corner with my hand the signal bars will start to drop until the phone is searching for a signal. Of corse I don't normally hold my phone I that manner so I've never noticed that before. So, I guess he's right, don't hold it that way.

I have read many of the forum posts and it's hard to comprehend the outcry. I love apple products, they constantly build and design the best consumer tech items hands down over any other company. This is still true for the iPhone 4. Yes, if you grip the phone, the signal strength goes down. This is also true for the 3gs. I have tried it with my 3gs both with and without a case. I can watch the bars disappear without a case, and when I put my plastic speck case on it, the bars stay at 5. I also noticed a drop in the wi-fi signal with a grip, full strength with a case or not being held. I strangely missed the outcry from the apple nation for this signal issue last year when the 3GS was released.

I get the passion that apple fans have for their products because I have it too. But here's my news flash! There are no perfect products in the world, and if there were, I've learned that someone somewhere would complain about something. I'm not saying this is a non-issue, I'm just saying that apple is run by humans making/designing products for human use. Apple's products are usually so great, it's easy to get swept up in the hysteria for perfection. Just ask yourself this.....If you think the iPhone 4 is the best smartphone in the world, buy it. If you think you can't live with this issue, don't buy it. I personally don't think there is any phone that compares to the iPhone, and I'm that's my opinion. But if you aren't ok, shut up and buy something else. Talk is cheap and most people vote with their dollars. So if it disturbs you that much, vote for another phone/platform/carrier.....etc. The interesting thing is in a few months when apple tells the world how many iPhone 4's they've sold, I predict that the $$ vote will overwhelmingly favor the new iphone. Early adopters spend a lot of money with apple, but they sure seem to whine a lot also.

I'm casting my vote on a white iPhone 4 when they reach the market.

So, if this never gets fixed by Apple, here is your best solution (I mean, other than ranting like a 12 year old online):

Clear nail polish. Should only have to do it on one section of metal, probably the bottom strip would be best, just enough for where your hand/finger will touch. It will do a better job, and is less intrusive than tape, bumper, or case. Do it well, nobody will ever know it's there, you'll forget about it. Should work on other phones with similar issues, as well. (well, it doesn't have to be clear, if you like pretty colors)

I have used this many times as I have a skin allergy to some metals, it allowed me to wear watches I otherwise would not have been able to. Also used it to protect metal in certain situations.

Electricity doesn't aide cancer. You really aren't in a position to cast aspersions.

lol you can touch an antenna, its receiving RF signals, its not exactly electricity as we know it. its harms our tissue, our body will heal itself. the sun probably sends out a million times more radiation than what you are exposed to from the phone.

the signal issue is a problem with every phone. Try holding the top left corner of a 3g or the 3gs. its just the signal attenuating. put a small piece of clear tape on the bottom metal piece. it works.
