Apple stipulates that all prototype iPhones be carried around in the outside world with a plastic case to disguise them...

This is a direct consequence of Apple's secrecy policy, they didn't bother testing it in the wild without a case.

Mine's gone back anyway.

i don't know if anyone mentioned this before but could this issue played a PART at the loading problems during Steve's announcement of iPhone 4? Apple said it was WiFi issues due to all those other WiFi and MiFi's in the room BUT the 3GS managed to upload the page even if it did it slow. iPhone 4 never made it. Could it be that Steve was holding the "dead zone"?

sounds like class action + anti trust action is the end game here. apple needs to feel some pain on this one

My God that makes sense ... Oh, wait ...

So, what now? Class action lawsuit? Wait for a software update? Demand a free bumper? Cancel, sell the phone and get an Evo? Choices, choices.

I agree with everything except the lawsuit and EVO. Lawsuit could come if Apple gets to stubborn to fix it.

Steve Jobs have the biggest EGO on the planet. His pride will not allow him to admit fault in any of his products. I just can't believe how this stupid _ass problem passed the QA process. the normal way to hold a phone is how everyone is doing it which is causing signal diminishing issues.

I hope there will be some sort of huge bad PR for this fault because I don't want to put a plastic bumper cover to fix the issue. I want to use the phone without one.

How anyone can possibly be so daft to actually believe that the iBumper wasn't intended for a band-aid fix for what is obviously a HW defect of Job's "groundbreaking" aerial antenna design is pretty funny.

Are we supposed to believe that this few mm thick, mass produced cheap ass band of silicone would really prevent your iPhone4 from receiving any significant damage should it be dropped?

From what I have heard from many of my friends that bought the iPhone4, the AT&T sales reps were pushing this band as if it were as necessary as the phone charger itself.

Also, I love the whole attitude of "mine isn't dropping a signal & working fine, hooray for me!, screw you".

A mobile phones first & foremost priority is making & receiving calls, & if you actually think that after all these years of progressive mobile telephony, YOU need to conform to an "Apple Approved" method of holding your phone, you are indeed deluded.

I have owned so many mobiles over the past 10 years from Nokia, Motorola, Samsung & 2 iPhones,I have never once had to cradle my device in a special fashion as if I were afflicted with some type of palsy, I will not let Apple dictate how I hold my mobile, for FFS.

So long Apple....& note to Jobs:

When this fiasco over the aerial antenna eventually blows up in your smug face, run to the round house, they can't corner you there.

Clear Coat Nail polish !

That would only partially fix the problem. There's still capacitive coupling loss and shielding affects from the hand being so close. I still lose 2 bars with my hand wrapped around the bumper of my iPhone 4 (but lose 4 or 5 bars with a sweaty hand directly in contact with the metal antenna gap without the bumper).

But I see why Apple did it. When holding the iPhone 4 by the top, I get 3 or 4 bars in a room where I only got 1 or 2 bars with my 3GS. Much improved coverage in marginal reception areas.

Can anyone remember at the keynote was Steve holding the iPhone 4 when it failed to load the New York Times?

The good stuff cut out from the "official" WWDC intro video:

Honestly, I'd never seen that footage till a few hours ago myself, and now that I've seen it, my word, Jobs was probably more pissed that the 570 APs in the room were creating nothing but interference for The Reality Distortion Field... :)

He probably ripped the heads off several small children backstage when that was finally done.

Aust Release

I hope this issue is fixed by the time it is released in oz or he will have record number avoiding upgrade! If i wanted to make my phone fatter with a bumper i'd go get a far cheaper brick phone!

not happy!

So yes he was holding it!

Yes the problem has to do with the design. They should not have ever shown the iPhone without a case. The case doesn't ruin the iPhone 4 for anyone unless they know what it's like without the bumper. The over all design with a bumper is better than that of a 3GS given it's protection, size and choice in color. The smaller size of the new iPhone makes up for the bumper. Yes apple made a mistake but it was only in that they do not include a free bumper with every purchase stating the phone will hold up longer and have better reception.

Advice Please!

I am in the UK and am planning to get the iPhone 4 (as soon as O2 get some stock!!!). I tend to hold the phone in my left hand and poke at the screen with my right hand fingers when using apps (particularly Safari), but when making a call I always use my right hand. My question is, does this problem affect WiFi connections severely? If it does, and no fix is available, I may have to re-think my purchase...............

(P.S. I DO NOT want any sort of case!!!)

It hasn't affected my wifi connection, it's only related to the phone aspect so far.

Hey man.

What I would do is go and actually TEST a unit in a Apple store before buying it. They had a fair few all on different networks at Apple Trafford Centre yesterday.

I know you said you didn't want any sort of case. But I had no intention of buying a case yesterday morning before I knew anything about all this. But a Apple employee showed me his iPhone 4 in a Black Bumper and I thought 'that looks really smart'.

This comes from a guy who has NEVER had any sort of case for any phone EVER. Never alone my iPhone 3G and 3Gs.

I can't believe the level of ignorence in here. I'm watching bar go down on my phone as I only hold the bottom part of my phone, index on the left gap, thumb on the right gap. Let go and the bar goes back up. The sad part is that this isnt hard to duplicate at all.

If this turns out to be true, that's it folks.

Prepare to deal with the issue or return the phone.

Should you have to 'correct' your behavior in order to use the phone, or should the phone work around you instead?

Should you have to buy an accessory in order for your $200 device to function properly?

$ 200,- ???? What about € 738,- ?!
