As you can see from the demo video, the signal was a full strength and he was holding two iPhones, one in each hand, therefore was not even touching the weak spot, let a lone being on WiFi.

So just demo speaking. Since there were 570 computers running WiFi in ad-hock mode or AP mode. (probably jail broken iPhones, with tethering) I can believe his troubles were due to signal interference.

I have been at WWDC 3 times. It's a pain to get clean WiFi when everyone is trying to get on. (5000+ people) Even 3G becomes useless with those numbers.

Jedi Mind Trick

Good call by SJ - the old Jedi mind trick.

Sure it only works on those with weak minds but that's still a huge demographic.

Perhaps a new strapline would lower expections - Apple iPhone: it's no worse than other mobile phones. Really. :p

I dont know what to say, I am in shock.

Steve Jobs confirming this is a non-issue is probably the most fundamental mistake made by any company ever.

I will be phoning Apple RIGHT away and demanding a replacement, shipped overnight. In over 50% of my calls yesterday, I lost signal and the call failed. I cannot browse the internet in my left hand, and the right isn't much better ... yes we use our FINGERS to stable the phone..!

If Apple do not address this issue, i'll be selling my phone and getting a competitors - completely SHOCKING is Apple's responce. I cannot see how ANYONE with this issue can defend them. I cannot make bloody phone calls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AND NO, I WONT FIT SOME CHEAP ASS RUBBER TO THE PHONE TO MAKE IT WORK PROPERLY - I'LL GET A PROPER phone instead!

Time to cancel my order for July 2 I think. It's not worth going through the hassle of switching to a microsim only to find that the phone doesn't work well enough and have to return it for a refund, when my 3GS is still fine. I don't want a case of any sort on any iPhone ever, and nor do I need a £600 phone that you have to fret over how you hold it. That's just ridiculous. Maybe they will have solved it somehow in a couple of months, or maybe wait for next year's phone instead, it's not the end of the world.

But how about the people who do NOT want the "bumper" or any other "case"...

If "bumper" is solution to the problem then it shouldn't have been accessory but part of the phone design :)

Yup. I don't want a damn bumper or case for my iPhone. Make it work properly without one, Apple. I don't buy a beautiful phone to cover it with some ugly case.

I truly hope that everyone is going to return their phone.

That way us europeans actually get a shot of acquiring one.

For me: I don't care about the signal strength issue. I hardly call anyway, I only text and mail (and tweet).

Well i am certainly waiting before i get one. I hold phones in the way that from the pictures i have seen would replicate the problems that people have been having. If this is going to be a major issue then i will simply get either an iPad/Touch and a HTC phone or the new Samsung Galaxy S

You would be willing to pay full price and receive a used one? pfft.

I hope you know unless you can type with one hand, you will still end up holding it in the forbidden position and yes, DATA RATES are effected as well!

Seriously if people want to go commando on their iPhone, they are risking a bag of hurt.

The glass on the phone is tough, but just the right hit, even tap, and bang it's spiderweb glass time.

A rubber ring or case can make all the difference in avoiding the single miracle contact that makes your phone into something less useful.

If you finally wake up and realize you need to protect your investment and cover the phone, the signal loss is truly a non-issue. I have tested this. However I am still waiting for an In-Case cover for the iPhone 4, which is nowhere to be found.

Rocketfish™ Mobile - Case for Apple® iPhone® 4 - Black, is the best case I can find today. However I don't like how it feels so I am still looking. I am so nervous to drop my phone right now.

I have covered every single iPhone I've had. I strongly recommend a cover for everyone.

I don't know anything about electrical engineering or anything else, but it looks to me like maybe a hardware AND a software problem.

I'm in a pretty marginal signal area and am always switching between 3G/EDGE/GPRS at the best of times, but here's what happens when I put the iPhone 4 down on a table:

So, not bad for zero bars! Does 3G have such a cliff that you can still get 2mbps right at the very edge of a dropout? Or is there something wrong with the bar calibration as has been suggested? And could this affect the point at which the phone gives up on 3G and goes to EDGE/GPRS?

Here's what happens when I touch my finger to the gap on the left hand side:

The data connection drops out completely, and then goes to EDGE. There's definitely been a hit to reception, which must be based on the hardware, but I wonder if the software could be tuned to survive that hit and stick with 3G even at sub-2mbps speeds.

Oh and I use the iPhone more for data than for voice, and as a right-hander I can't really see any way to hold it apart from the forbidden position.

Hey man.

What I would do is go and actually TEST a unit in a Apple store before buying it. They had a fair few all on different networks at Apple Trafford Centre yesterday.

I know you said you didn't want any sort of case. But I had no intention of buying a case yesterday morning before I knew anything about all this. But a Apple employee showed me his iPhone 4 in a Black Bumper and I thought 'that looks really smart'.

This comes from a guy who has NEVER had any sort of case for any phone EVER. Never alone my iPhone 3G and 3Gs.

Good advice, I will try that, thx

iPhone same as EVO

My HTC EVO does the exact same thing! When my hand covers the top half of the phone, where the antenna resides, my reception goes from five bars to one. At least the iPhone doesn't run Android. I still can't get over how artless, unrefined, and totally inconsistent the Android platform is. Can't wait for my iPhone 4 to arrive in the mail.

Yeah, but that's not nearly as bad considering most people don't hold their phone from the top half, but rather the bottom for support. Maybe Apple should've designed that antenna gap towards the top and it would be less of an issue?

But who holds the top of the phone? The iPhone's issue is in a natural position to grip the phone.

I'm glad I waited to get the white iPhone. Now I'm considering not buying it at all unless Apple releases a REAL fix for it, not a bandaid bumper thing that looks like crap anyway.

That's your opinion but many people have been using iPhones for years without a case and do not intend to start doing so now.

I totally agree. I am in my early thirties, & I for one do not want some gaudy silicone accessory in order for me to use my phone.

I am just awestruck that many of your are seriously buying into the idea of that if you want your mobile to work properly....you NEED to buy a $30.00 rubber-band.

Call me crazy, but I thought the only prerequisites for using a mobile phone was a phone & a service provider.

:) Beat ya to it. But ditto on waiting, though I'm not too hopeful. Steve did basically say "deal with it".
