From the looks of Steve's e-mail, I'd say it's slim to none. Steve thinks it's a non-issue....A revision in both design and the manufacturing is a very costly procedure that would cost Apple millions. Don't think a CEO as on top of the ball as SJ would do something like that when they didn't have to.

It's going to be very costly when people start returning them due to poor signals. Do you really think a Genius is going to say this to someone's face: "Well, sir, you're not holding your phone right. You should really be holding it this way...". Good luck with that spin.

Wow! Go get another phone if you aren't happy! Simple as that!

I'm guessing some company will come out with a little strip of clear plastic that you can tape over that area and solve the problem, or you could even do it yourself with a short trip to the craft store.

Personally I don't hold my phone in a way that will cover that part. Whether left or right handed.

Translation: Because this is Apple, just completely give a BIG GIANT PASS to a company for selling a $200-$600 phone that has a fundamental design flaw.

If this was ANY OTHER COMPANY you apologists would be roasting them.

seriously, who wraps their hands around the phone like that when using it? I basically use my thumb and middle finger to hold the phone and my pointer finger on the back to hold it to my head. And even then i'm holding it by the bottom part of the phone and not the sides. some people really look for anything to complain about.

SJ does, Just look at the pic of him holding the iPhone4.

Jobs has been sending these bitchy replies for years now. People are finally pissed because it's an actual problem this time.

I cup it like that when I'm using it to look something up, browse, etc.

So if I'm looking up directions while trying to keep a call.... I lose the call.

This is crazy, that response is so frustrating. I cant believe this whole issue. About 50% of my calls on the 4 have dropped so far.

3GS does this too!

So I was somewhat dismayed when I read that the iPhone 4 was having these issues, and even more dismayed when I read Steve's reply - not very good at customer service, is he? I wondered if my current iPhone did the same thing, although I have never noticed it before . . . and it does! If I hold it in a 'death grip' my signal drops about 3 bars - bottom left edge of phone resting in my palm. I wonder if other 3GS do this? If so, perhaps this is indeed a non-issue? Something that no-one notices until someone else points it out, at which point it becomes the end of the world?

I'll probably still get a iPhone 4.

Here's my "issue" with the "issue"

I don't doubt that many phones can or have this problem besides the iPhone. Steve (Corporates) explanation at least gives understanding to the issue.

The first response, however, calling it a non-issue is a bit snarky.

The fact is - it IS an issue. Maybe not EXCLUSIVE to the iPhone - but it's an ISSUE when the consumer has to figure out a work-around to use the product as it was intended.

But it's not terribly surprising as many apps in the app store provide functionality to the phone that should be inherent.

I'm not returning my iPhone 4. The problem, while I can reproduce it often, hasn't actually made me lose any calls yet. And I plan to have a case anyway.

OMG. It's true. The real reason for the "Bumper".

Very sad day for Apple. This may be unrecoverable. Too many resources assigned to the iPad despite Steve's claims. Rush the 4th Gen phone to market,
and BOOM.:apple:

i wonder if this will wake some blind apple fans up... probably not. i tried to be happy with this phone but it didn't work out. returning it asap.

I sure hope Jobs is kidding, if not that's a ridiculous remark:eek:. I dont recall having ANY receptions issues with my 2G, 3G or 3Gs. Just comes down to another product being rushed into the market place without fully being tested. What a let down. Glad I didn't wait in line for something that looses reception simply because your holding it :D

Calling an "issue" a "non issue" WOW.....Apple your better then this.

Can anyone answer this?

Did you see the iFixit pictures of the teardown? It seems like they could re-fabricate the antenna band and just replace current iPhone 4 users SILLYBANDzzz...LOLLOLOLOL Did I just say that?:D

I smell some free bumpers until the fix is released and iTune giftcards .. Mark my words.

The left side rests on my palm. You hold the phone with just your fingers? That sounds uncomfortable.

Well, I guess that makes it official: Our hands are poorly designed, the iPhone is not.

There has always been a certain arrogance to Apple in general and Steve in particular, but it's been tolerable. Sometimes just barely, but still, never quite over the line, just very close to it.

But this... is over the line and then some. I never thought it would come to it but the guy has literally lost touch with reality now. Steve's distortion field(TM) has broken loose from planet Earth and is drifting out into space like a soap bubble.

Seriously though guys....

If I upgraded my phones (thus signing the 2 year deal with AT&T), can I still return the phones within 30 days and get out of the contract extension?

Thats you. That don't mean everybody gotta hold their phone like you.
Posts like this is why SJ can make a comment like that and get away with it.

I hold my phone SJ style when i'm messing with apps, browsing and talking on the phone.

I posted this hypothesis somewhere else, I can't remember if it was Macrumors, but I wonder if since they tested the iPhone 4 in a mock 3GS case, they never noticed this problem? Jobs said it was necessary to field test the device, which is why Gray Powell had it. But Gray Powell never tested the device without the case on.

Anyhow, it makes me feel a *little* less jealous, besides everyone knows iPhones are for looking at, not for touching!

haha What a crap response. It should be:

Apologies for the engineering oversight. Avoid holding it that way or use a protective case to shield it. We will be re-engineering the design immediately.

I am not the least bit surprised as Apple still to this day refuses to acknowledge the yellow jaundice issue of the iMacs and considers that to be a non-issue....what happened to this company?
