OMG. It's true. The real reason for the "Bumper".

Very sad day for Apple. This may be unrecoverable. Too many resources assigned to the iPad despite Steve's claims. Rush the 4th Gen phone to market,
and BOOM.:apple:

+1

This is just the tip of the ice burg for the ship called Apple. Their PR dept must be in a frenzy right now. Doesn't look good. If I had Apple stock right now, I would seriously think about selling it. It has nowhere to go but down right now.

I think people are in for a world of revelation as Steve's vision continues to permeate the product line. While he loves the hero worship bestowed upon him for the great things he brings us, he is just as quick to dismiss any critic of any kind, no matter if you have been (other than the one critique) his most ardent supporter.

There's a real psychology behind what makes Mr. Jobs tick. Anyone who has watched him since the 80's would understand this and recognize that it really is his way or the highway. That myopic vision has produced minor miracles. But you either accept him as divine...or be cast into the world of "not an issue."

Just another of the growing example of apple going form over function.
They choose to put a huge design flaw in the phone so it could look pretty.

As much as i love the iPhone 4, I will be returning it asap and getting my money back. I will not take this for a solution. I hope that this is fixed. Good luck apple.

-pissed off a long time fan.

Steve Talk

I'm surprised that he didn't include "so thin, so beautiful"

Gorgeous, Elegant, and Sexy!!! Really Hot!! Unbelievable, Revolutionary, and Magical.. Our back looks better than the front of the other guys (Their phones are crappy, clunky, and junky)!!!!

I hope this is the day when the Mindless Fanboys finally standup and say "No Mr. Jobs, I want my money's worth and going and buying an accessory to make this thing function normally is unacceptable."

Steve's right this is a non issue being made into a big deal by haters and trolls. If you really aren't happy with the most amazing phone in the world then take it back and buy a POS Android phone. If This was a real problem then ther's no doubt in my mind that Steve would take care of it. He's never let us down before. Don't let the haters win, ignore them they're just jealous they can't afford a real phone because they're on welfare.

Well, I guess that makes it official: Our hands are poorly designed, the iPhone is not.

There has always been a certain arrogance to Apple in general and Steve in particular, but it's been tolerable. Sometimes just barely, but still, never quite over the line, just very close to it.

But this... is over the line and then some. I never thought it would come to it but the guy has literally lost touch with reality now. Steve's distortion field(TM) has broken loose from planet Earth and is drifting out into space like a soap bubble.

I have to laugh because those that like to poke fun at Jobs for thinking he's G-d would write about how Jobs designs better than G-d. Clearly the human hand - which has been in existence for thousands of years was designed incorrectly.

I tried this on several iPhone 4s today at work after I saw the video online demonstrating it like 5 times in a row but I was unable to ever make it happen. I was able to make the signal drop when holding it like that, but not drop calls. I think the problem isn't as bad as the net would want you to believe BUT it is a problem.

I love Apple and Steve and almost always agree with them, but I have to say this is pretty lame! I will NOT put a case on my iPhone 4. I carried my iPhone 3G naked for 2 years and NEVER dropped it once, and that is how I like it. I don't want a case that will make it ugly and bigger!

I guess we will see how big of an impact this death grip really has once they tweak the display is bars and I use my new iPhone 4 in real life with various locations with different signal strengths. I am left handed and hold my phone with my left hand, but actually most right handed people I know hold it with the left hand because they are using their right hand to manipulate the phone. So this could have a big impact!

It did seem unnatural to hold it cradled in the palm of your hand with that lower left corner when I was trying to reproduce the problem, so we will see how it goes when I hold it normally which doesn't really cover that area much.

Ahh.

Is he trying to be funny - or does he really think that's the solution.

Wow

LOL on "just avoid holding it that way".

Waiting for the "lefties" class-action.

Jon Ive is obviously a rightie. Time for him to go. Let's get a leftie this time.

Seriously? Non issue? That's exactly how I've always hold my iphone

I just can't believe that Jobs would respond like this.

Perfect. :apple:

Well, it'll be interesting to see how many people just take it and put a case on it sending a clear message that it's ok for Apple to screw customers. As mad as folks are, I'm betting Steve knows he can get away with it. I'm still on the fence now but I'm no longer in a rush to get a white one.

This is bs....I had tried it earlier and didnt see the problem, but I was sitting in my couch holding the phone and right before my eyes the bars started disappearing, it took about a minute and half...I previously waited 30-45 secs... The second I placed the phone on the couch, the signal came back. I tried it 10 times to make sure and it happened every single time.

His response is not an appropriate one. This coupled with privacy concerns recently brought up really make me wonder whether I should continue buying iPhones...unfortunately the options out there aren't that great...so I'm kinda stuck, we'll see. Google promises huge UI improvements in next version of Android (not Froyo, after 2.2).

WOOOOOOW!

"Forget about our SERIOUS design flaw you peon. I can't be bothered with such trite things as usability and real-world functionality."

What an absolute ass, and a TOTAL design failure on Apple's part. What a bunch of clueless narcissists.

Louisiana resident: "Hey BP exec, I can't use my beach!"
BP Exec: "Non-issue. Go to a different beach."

Jobs has turned into an uppity jerk. This makes me glad I'm dumping the iPhone and going to Verizon, where I can actually make and receive phone calls.

Yes. You're right. We're all on welfare and are haters. You caught us!

Wow. Maybe you’re being sarcastic. Otherwise, it might be time to get off the holodeck.

It's almost like he wants Droid users to laugh at me. He's like a parent dressing you like a dweeb on the first day of school. How can I get anybody to take my phone seriously when they can make it hang up just by holding it in their left hand. (Yes, I confirmed mine does this. Takes about 5-10 seconds to go from 3 bars to zero bars every time.)

If Jobs really sent this I guarantee the droid guys are already working on their next marketing campaign. Droid does...You can hold it in your left hand.
Seriously, I saw this issue on CNN and NYT before I checked macrumors today; so if they can't find a solution this is going to become a marketing nightmare.

The Teacup Phone

The Teacup Phone: just hold it with your pinky stuck out!

Not a big deal...
