You guys know about the limitations and regulations that the FCC impose when designing a mobile phone?

They impose that the antenna is furthest away from your head, so the only place Apple could put it is towards the bottom of the phone.

All modern day phones have the same situation.
The antenna is not towards the bottom, it's two pieces that make out the entire frame. But it has passed (obviously) and radiation levels are comparable to the competitors.

This signal problem is amusing.

I had my iPhone 4 resting in my left hand (as I then tap/pinch etc with my right hand) and it gradually went down from 5 bars of O2 3G to 1 bar. Then put it back on the patio table and it slowly went back up to 5 bars.
Then I put my handkerchief over my left hand and rested the iPhone 4 back in it. This time it only went down from 5 bars of O2 3G to 4 bars. Then I got someone to pull the handkerchief out (which proves how the iPhone 4 was resting in my hand, not being gripped tightly!) and the signal slowly went down to 1 bar.

For reference, this was outside in Bath with the iPhone 4 connected to WiFi.

TLDR: Having the iPhone 4 resting in my left hand but insulated makes it drop 1 bar, without the insulation it drops 4 bars.

Blame Adobe, blame regulations, blame MS, blame the consumers...

It's amusing when people are so protective of Apple's mistake in this case that they try to justify this whole hiccup with regulations and laws.

Other manufacturers comply with the rules, yet they don't make phones that keeps dropping calls just because you hold it "the wrong way".

That was the dumbest argument I've ever heard. Calling all of us chimps?
I LOVE the iPhone 4 and Apple. I've progressively switched all my tech stuff over to Apple over the years. But my iPhone 4, HAS AN ISSUE THAT WONT LET ME USE IT AS A REGULAR PHONE. How difficult is that to understand?
I don't have to CUP the phone, all I have to do is touch that bottom left part with my palm or my fingers, and reception goes down IMMEDIATELY in a weak reception area, and over the course of a few second in 3G areas.
HOw is that MY PROBLEM and not Apple's to fix? Especially when there's so many of us out there.
So stop being such a fanboy. I DON'T want steve jobs to burn in hell, I just want my phone to work without me having to do acrobatics in order to hold it right!!

I think you might need to take a step back, calm down and actually read my comment. I made two examples of where it might be hard to hold the phone without cupping it. At no point did I call you or anybody else a chimp

and really I think the iPhone 4 might be the least of your problems, using an excessive amount of caps and telling me you don't want Steve to burn in hell which is a good thing but I'm not sure why you needed to tell me since I never mentioned anything about that is what you need to be focusing on

I think your problem might be with your temper

this is a forum to express your opinions and thats what I did if you disagree then that is your right but it I find it a little weak that you had to resort to name calling and screaming to do it

I was on a waiting list to get the new iPhone but the reality of what is being reported with signal loss causes me to wait and see. I can't believe Apple hasn't made an announcement yet. Some key points for me are:

1. Steve J had problems with the phone at his key note
2. I was always a bit perplexed by the push for bumpers which seemed somewhat odd
3. The level of Mac Rumour complaints

It all adds up to a major design fault - Apple need to come clean on this

1. Steve had a problem with the wifi connection not the 3G connection.
2. The bumpers were pushed no more than any other Apple product, maybe even less.
3. MacRumours always has it's fair share of complaints.
4. Your post is therefore irrelevant.

*By the way I have the death grip problem with my iPhone 4 as well.

As is yours.

Only 7% of the world's population is left-handed, and only 20% of those are overweight. That's less than 2% of all potential iPhone 4 users.

Sorry.

BJ

Steve should have responded in that email

"Our phones are not made for fat lefties"

I was simply answering your wuestions.
1. yes people are upset ab this not just bashing apple. hence the caps and the comment ab steve jobs.
2. The way I hold my phone makes the reception disappear. So by your reasoning I am like a 5 year old or a chimp.

i don't have a temper issue, i'm just sick of people telling me I don't have a problem with my phone, or how to hold it. How about Apple just fix the phone, so I can hold it ANY WAY I want to? That would be lovely ;)

Well said

1. I wonder if people are really upset about this? Or is this just another opportunity to bash Apple, 2.I have a hard time believing that anybody really holds there phone cupped in the palm of there hand and if by some chance you are one of few (my little cousin she is 5 and has not yet developed the fine motor skills to hold the phone like an adult or that chimp* from the you tube video) Then buy a case for you phone problem solved.

*the chimp is a fictional character used to make a point please do not look for video on you tube.

It certainly has, but the ratio of naysayers vs. yes-men is usually 10/90, at the absolute worst 50/50. This time it's 95/5, and I've seen quite a few resident Apple defenders step up and say "OK, even I can't back them up on this one".

I can't believe that even after this story made the front page on CNN and has been picked up by every major news organization both in the US and overseas, there are still people who think this is just another run-of-the-mill case of a handful of vocal whiners on some forum. Sure, people are crying wolf again, but this time there is an actual wolf.

True. I too am a 'yes-man" and I too can't defend Apple on this one.

Now that was an excellent post you still don't agree with what I said which is your right but this time there was no name calling and you only used caps on 2 words

and I'm sorry if I upset you with my comment I'm at work right now and I just wanted have a little fun posting a half serious comment. Yes they need to to fix it the phone if it is as big a problem as everyone here seems to think it is but for now might I suggest buying a case so your hand is not in direct contact with the antenna :)

What a coincidence. I'm a "naysayer" but I'm buying this phone. :D

(Admittedly though, I say that with some certainty because the iP4 release in Sweden is still one month away, so I'm expecting this guinea pig situation to be sorted in the weeks to come... plus I checked to see how I actually hold the iPhone 3G and to my surprise, despite being left handed it looks like it won't be an issue for me. But I feel for those who consider it a dealbreaker. ;))

And still the trolls and whiners continue

C'mon 93 pages is enough, stop feeding the trolls.

There is a simple test for whether people have a problem or not. Have they taken it back to the store or sent it back to Apple? or have they just whined on a forum?

Of course with any manufactured product there will be faulty samples (maybe as much as 5% in extreme cases).

The fact that people want to stamp their tiny little feet on forums like this one rather than seek redress from the manufacturer or the place they bought it from means that these people are more interested in making a noise and creating mischief than getting a problem fixed.

Supposedly some 600K handsets have been sold, lets see how many get returned.

Well I'm one of the many that suffers from the reception issue. I just called Apple support and was connected to someone right away.

Apple tech: How can I help you?
me: Are you familiar with the reception issue when you touch the lower left corner of iP4?

Apple tech: Yes sir we are.
me: I have that.

Apple tech: Did you buy a bumper case?
me: Nope.

Apple tech: Oh, well the fix right now is to use the bumper case. I can send you one.
me: Is that the official fix?

Apple tech: It's just temporary right now until they get an update out.
me: When will that happen?

Apple tech: Hopefully next week sometime. I'll go ahead and send your bumper out to you and you should receive it on Monday or Tuesday.

I really had no intention of trying to get a free bumper out this since it seems that doesn't always fix the issue. I just wanted to get a case number and let Apple know how many people are affected. I'll take a free bumper though since she offered it up.

I'm sure there will be a flood of lawsuits next week, some of which will be declared class action status. If the fault is truly a hardware problem, then a recall will probably happen after our bored Senators decide to investigate.

(By mentioning that there will likely be lawsuits, I am not expressing my personal opinion supporting them.)

If Apple will not step up and fix the defective phones properly, there should be a law suit, and I for one would whole-heartedly support the idea. Apple has to be responsible here. Being responsible means providing a product that functions as it was represented to function by the CEO of the company. Jobs/Apple's response is shameful in my opinion, and those of us with phones that do not function as phones when we holdthem, should not let him get away with this.

So the free bump case solution I predicted (and several others) is most likely now the recommended solution with Apple Support, or they've been given the "green light" to just make it happen, apparently. No real surprises and about on schedule from what I had guessed...

If more folks chime in with the same response that pretty much seals it.

Still no comment from apple then. Awful, I cannot use my phone in my left hand. I can't make calls comfortably! If apple don't announce a software fix or hardware recall my Tuesday, its going back!

I have had the "grip reception problem" with my iPhone 4 since Wednesday night and am not happy with Apple's response. The problem persists at my home where I have a weak signal from the beginning and have connection problems with my previous 3G and my wife has connections with her 2G. But never to the extent of what I've experiencing with the new phone. I have a bumper case out for delivery at this very moment (I ordered it before this problem even came out) I am hoping the case alleviates the problem, but in no way can I just sit back and say "Oh I guess I'll just have to start holding my phone in a way that I've never held a phone comfortably before". I do understand how people may not be experiencing this problem: I have no problems at work and can't even get the bars to drop at all no matter how I hold it, but I have an excellent signal at work.

Apple tech: It's just temporary right now until they get an update out.
There's something fishy about that, as noted here:

"It would be very interesting if Apple would in fact issue an update so close to its original release. However if true and the fix works, a lot of people will be all the happier.

Keep in mind that up until this point, Apple has said that this is a hardware related issue and to them, they see no problem. If a software issue fixes it, then somebody isn’t telling the whole story."

How can it both be a hardware issue and fixable with software? I'd understand had the issue been that the hardware has faulty firmware or something, but in this case the hardware problem is the physical design itself. I smell a band aid.

Other manufacturers comply with the rules, yet they don't make phones that keeps dropping calls just because you hold it "the wrong way".
Not defending anyone I personally hate apples product cept for the phone, but there are others with these issues, nexus one for example.

Couldn't agree more with VSMacOne; the post by SensaiMinstixs was idiotic. What the hell can't people like SensaiMinstixs understand. There are many many people who are just holding the phone in their hands and completely losing the signal. The phone is defective, whether its a hardware or a software issue, r a combination. Jobs/Apple's response was arrogant. They need to step up and do whatever they need to do to fix the issue.
