So the free bump case solution I predicted (and several others) is most likely now the recommended solution with Apple Support, or they've been given the "green light" to just make it happen, apparently. No real surprises and about on schedule from what I had guessed...

If more folks chime in with the same response that pretty much seals it.

That's the same response I got yesterday. I told them I don't want the bumper and that all of their advertising shows people holding the phone just as I do. I want them to fix the phone. I don't care whether it costs them millions to do so. It is completely unacceptable to hype a product like they did and then have it fail to perform its primary function. And if they knew about this problem, well that's another matter. In my opinion, that's deceptive.

There is clearly a problem. Those people claiming otherwise are either lucky, stupid or don't have An iPhone 4. They're also probably apple fanbois who want to keep the apple name clean.

I can demonstrate this issue quite easily, anywhere in my town. Hold phone in left hand and signal dies- simple as that. I'm not over exaggerating,
It's the truth.

If apple don't come up with a suitable fix, my phone will go back and I'd imagine apple will have some serious **** to contend with PR wise

Couldn't agree more with VSMacOne; the post by SensaiMinstixs was idiotic. What the hell can't people like SensaiMinstixs understand. There are many many people who are just holding the phone in their hands and completely losing the signal. The phone is defective, whether its a hardware or a software issue, r a combination. Jobs/Apple's response was arrogant. They need to step up and do whatever they need to do to fix the issue.

Do you even have one of the new phones? and they probably trying to fix the problem as we type.

But in the mean time there are so many ways around this issue buy a case or a bluetooth headset, use the apple ear buds with the built in mic, put it on speaker phone and if none of those solutions are good enough for you because I assume your just one of those people that are all about the principle of the situation then return the phone. Last time I checked apple didn't put a gun to your head and say buy this phone or else

It's amusing when people are so protective of Apple's mistake in this case that they try to justify this whole hiccup with regulations and laws.

Other manufacturers comply with the rules, yet they don't make phones that keeps dropping calls just because you hold it "the wrong way".

Kudos for a brilliant post!

I concur.

And if they knew about this problem, well that's another matter. In my opinion, that's deceptive.
Of course they knew. They've known for years, from the second someone slapped the blueprints on the table in front of the engineers and said "build this". The people who built it know about electromagnetics, it's their job.

I think the thought process went something like this:

1) We need to cram the next iPhone full of new stuff. Secondary camera, flash, Retina display etc.

2) We need a considerably larger battery to drive it, because A. it will need more power, and B. people are already complaining about the poor battery life on previous models.

3) Having established points 1 and 2, we still need to make it thinner than the last one(!) because we've made thinness into this huge thing that people will always be looking for, so we mustn't disappoint.

The first part was easy. Limiting storage capacity to 32 GB (check). Switching to micro SIM (check). But then... given the self-contradictory mission statement, they had to think of something more radical and came up with the idea of eliminating the internal antennas and integrating them with the exterior. This was probably something of an Eureka moment and they couldn't turn back from it. But then there came a point where they realized that no matter how they divide up the metal band around the sides, the potential problem of bridging the antennas remained. And then someone (Steve?) stepped in and said "you know what? I'm feeling bold today. Let's run with it. Heck, we have the power. We're Apple. We can make people change the way they hold their phones."

It certainly has, but the ratio of naysayers vs. yes-men is usually 10/90, at the absolute worst 50/50. This time it's 95/5, and I've seen quite a few resident Apple defenders step up and say "OK, even I can't back them up on this one".

I can't believe that even after this story made the front page on CNN and has been picked up by every major news organization both in the US and overseas, there are still people who think this is just another run-of-the-mill case of a handful of vocal whiners on some forum. Sure, people are crying wolf again, but this time there is an actual wolf.

True. I too am a 'yes-man" and I too can't defend Apple on this one.

Add me to this list. Read my post history here, I always defended Apple. Always. But not on this issue. It isn't the dropped calls that bother me as much as the TOTAL and INSTANT loss of 3G data service. That's total BS. Sorry Apple.

I have one of the phones. I hate the signal problem. I love the phone. And sensaiMinstix is perfectly accurate.

We paid (or at least I did) £600 for this phone, because, in the adverts, IT CLAIMED IT WORKED LIKE A PHONE. It could pick up calls, WITHOUT BEING LIFTED WITHOUT CONTACT.

The design of the phone is aesthetically pleasing, and I have to admit it was a major draw for me. The fact that it doesn't work means that apple have ****ed up majorly.

They didn't put a gun to my head, but they promised a basic underlying functionality that is incorrect and untrue. Thats why people are annoyed.

Now, do you have one of the phones?

What I dont understand is, why in god's name didnt they make the bands meet on the top-right part of the phone (its all empty space) instead of the bottom-left?? They picked the exact worst placement for this thing ever.

The engineers probably did just that but Steve didnt like the "looks" of it.

Just phoned Apple Support UK...

Told:
"Apple are aware of the issue.."
"It is not a hardware problem.."
"A fix will be coming soon.."

Not offered a free bumper.

People claim its due to FCC regulations. I don't care if my brain gets irradiated by unproven-to-be-ionizing rays, as long as the phone works. They could easily have put the divie either side of the headphone jack and we would'nt be experiencing this problem unless some weirdos palm the top of their phones.

Sorry, this whole issue is so frustrating for me. Apple wouldn't even give me a free bumper when I phoned up! :L

EDIT- *divide

all that comes to my mind is LOL.
SJ is so confident about people buying apple stuff that he just doesn´t care. And that is thank to all the apple fanbois that blindly defend their God. He knows you´ll buy apple stuff no matter what so he pushes pretty much beta testing products and corrects the issues in rev2.
You got to be a moron to buy apple rev 1 products.

So it would appear that all Apple techs got the "not a hardware problem" memo today. Interesting. Though I can't help but wonder, if software actually fixes this, what else will break?

They could easily have put the divide either side of the headphone jack and we would'nt be experiencing this problem unless some weirdos palm the top of their phones.
They could've put it exactly where the headphone jack is, because the plug would be hiding most of the seam, the plugs are plastic so they wouldn't bridge the antennas, plus it's the one spot where people are guaranteed to not be placing their fingers. Though I suspect the SAR rating would've gone through the roof, so there was that to consider as well. You may not care personally but there are lots of tin foil hatters out there who think phones are slowly frying their brains.

Me neither! thought I might be lucky enough to get one if I went into a conversation about returning the phone but no luck. Mind you, my guy had just came in apparently and he said NONE OF THEM had been briefed about how to deal with the situation. Obviously people are toeing the line down in the call centres to avoid giving out too much in case of retribution.

Fair dos to them. I just can't wait for the email briefing to come through and say no bumpers. THEN I'll really have someone to yell at... :D

Yes I have a phone. Do you? I bought it to use in a business. I am regularly on hour long phone calls. I realize that I can use the phone without touching it. Are you suggesting that's sufficient when all of the advertising (as well as the Jobs demonstrations) show people holding the phone? It's designed to be held and my particular phone doesn't work when I do that. I also don't like arrogant responses (Jobs) from companies that hype their products the way Apple does. For your info, I have been using Macs since since 1995, and with rare exception (e.g. OS 7.5) they are vastly superior products. I have an iMac and an iPad and was so looking forward to this iPhone so that I could dump my Android. I bought into the hype. Got up at 5 am to make sue my order would go through. I tracked the package etc etc etc. Then what I get is a piece of crap and an arrogant response from the company. UNACCEPTABLE!

It's actually pretty cool party trick. I can hold my iPhone 4 and my wife's and make each signal die in an alternating manner. Basically, there acting as each other's "control" at different times. But, still, no problem here.

What happens if you place the phones side by side so that they bridge eachother's antennas? Does it create a superconductor that turns into a black hole or do the phones vanish and reappear in an alternate universe?

I appreciate your response, but when people bought this phone (which is incredible, btw), they sort of expected it to work out of the box. You know, "It just works". Is this really too much to ask? Are we really being unreasonable?

Probably not, but it might recreate a small duplicate of The Reality Distortion Field, who knows. Personally I still think they install RDF proximity generators in every Apple device to "keep the magic happening" but that's just me. ;)

If so, it's sure as hell broken in my iPhone 4 'cause I'm not jazzed at all this time out.

Seriously, you go ahead justify a faulty item while praising your God but please stay away from normal people while they are demanding a working product for which they PAID for.
You are the reason apple is lowering it´s standards as you are happy cause you have a nice new box with a apple logo on your table and it doesn´t really matter if it´s content works alright or not.

When you fly high, you drop hard. When you are arrogant, the world is turning against you and when there is a hype, there is a windfall.

That was this week's eastern philosophy (kitchen edition) for you. Come back for more next week, when we discuss the meaning of life in two lines! :)

It's hard to believe this was missed by Apple engineering. But obviously it was.

I can make the signal go away by "shorting" the two antennas, but I use a case or sleeve on all my cell phones so it is a "non issue" for me.

Three phases of iPhone ownership:
1. This phone is great!
2. This phone is crap!
3. This phone isn't so bad.

Sounds like some of you are stuck in phase 2.

What does it matter if I have a phone or not everything I said is true there are plenty of ways around this problem while they try to fix the phone and it none of them meet your satisfaction then return the phone last time I looked the new iPhone 4 did not come with a all sales final policy

oh and here's a thought if this phone is for your business and you need it to be reliable because you make long calls with it buy a blackberry like 80% of the business community does

Are we really being unreasonable? not at all you have every right to fill the way you do but until they fix the problem if you are unhappy with the phone then you can always return it

I think that maybe it is in fact you that is the idiot What does it matter if I have a phone or not everything I said is true there are plenty of ways around this problem while they try to fix the phone and it none of them meet your satisfaction then return the phone last time I looked the new iPhone 4 did not come with a all sales final policy

not the ********** point! im sorry to get frustrated but you are missing the point, and brow beating people in a more qualified position than yourself to judge the severity of the problem!

we paid £600 for a phone. The phone doesnt work. Its simple- Apple needs and is obligated to fix this.

And have you ever wondered that Blackberries are only used more than iphone because theyre cheaper and you have more options network wise- and companies have long standing agreements with networks to cover their whole employee base. iphones are nicer than blackberries, imho and therefore at least a few others will hold the same opinion.

none of this excuses the fact that apple have done wrong with the design of this iphone.
