I can make the signal go away by "shorting" the two antennas, but I use a case or sleeve on all my cell phones so it is a "non issue" for me.

Three phases of iPhone ownership:
1. This phone is great!
2. This phone is crap!
3. This phone isn't so bad.

Sounds like some of you are stuck in phase 2.

I think that maybe it is in fact you that is the idiot What does it matter if I have a phone or not everything I said is true there are plenty of ways around this problem while they try to fix the phone and it none of them meet your satisfaction then return the phone last time I looked the new iPhone 4 did not come with a all sales final policy

oh and here's a thought if this phone is for your business and you need it to be reliable because you make long calls with it buy a blackberry like 80% of the business community does

Here's another thought. Have you heard of periods?? They're all the rage these days.

Why would they charge a restocking fee if the product is defective, though? How would Apple argue against the suggestion that it's defective? Was there any attempt to alert people to this design flaw/quirk? Was it advertised? Was there a "getting started" pamphlet in the box where they warned people about holding the phone certain ways? Nope.

So they had better accept any returns against a full refund, as long as customers refer to the antenna problem as the reason for returning the phone. If they wanna return it because they don't like it or they think it's ugly or whatever, then they can go ahead and charge restocking fees.

The thing is, they'll charge you a restocking fee unless the managers are told otherwise or there is an official statement from Apple admitting that there is indeed a hardware problem.

Just tried to return my phone to ATT. They wanted a restocking fee. I refused to pay it and they are checking with regional management whether they can waive it. I am absolutely not paying a restocking fee for a product that does not work as advertised. Nobody should.
 
I was wondering, instead of nail varnish as an option, whether to try and find some non-conductive paste like they use in computers to shield components from shocks.

Slather it over the corner and about 1 cm upwards of the divide, and surely that would prevent most people from bridging the gap? unless the genuinely tried to bridge it, I would think that it would be slightly difficult?

Just a thought, I'm tempted to do it to mine but havnt yet found a transparent paste that wont be visible. Cant bring myself to destroy the design :eek:

Interesting. I'm guessing that individual exceptions were easier to do in the past when it was just between the vendor and the customer, but in the internet age, any time they cut a deal with ONE customer it practically becomes a policy because he will tell everyone else that he was able to do it, and this info is spread with the speed of light.

If your point is that the iPhone 4 is too unreliable to be used for business purposes, I agree with you. Too bad for Apple, as business use is surely a growth market for them.
 
For the 'Bumper' thing? Should be free. In the box with the iPhone.

The bumpers cost them at most a dollar. People in the long term are paying thousands to have and use this phone.

So apple should absolutely be giving everyone a free case. Being bitchy about it is going to cost them much more than giving everyone a free bumper case.

ha, i'm pretty sure I could prove that the most likely issue I'd be returning my iphone for (the signal problem) was an underlying problem that was present from purchase. Either that, or I'll just give the genius a link to this thread :cool:
 
My theory is that having 4 or 5 bars "before" is fake and programmed into the software to make AT&T look good. Bridging the two antennas activates a bug in iOS 4 which shows AT&T's true signal strength = 1 bar or nothing at all. The latter would reflect my call quality experiences with AT&T.

So there. It's nothing more than a bug! :p

People need to keep making noise about this. Don't just wait for somthing to happen. Take videos of the sgnal loss issue and post them here and on Youtube. Keep posting on blogs. I've even written to local news station and newspaper. Hey, even Brian Williams talked about it on NBC Nightly News. The only way Apple will do something about this is if we DON'T GO AWAY. This is critical if owners actually want something to happen. It seems like apple has decided to ignore this and hope that people just stop talking about it.

This is EXACTLY right. If you have one of the affected phones, I also suggest calling ATT and asking for a prorated refund of the monthly fee until Apple fixes this. Each of them needs to hear the message that they can not do this.

I can understand that signal loss is a possibility when you pioneer a new RF technology.
I can understand temporarily getting no service if a software bug prevents the phone adapting to the situation.

What I can't understand is that the issue IS known, and a solution of a kind (bumpers) IS available, but being sold as an extra, at a premium price, even though to use the £600 product you now NEED this case.

Its ridiculous if I'm honest. If not give out the bumpers for free, then at least sell them for a non-profit. Or this whole business about Apple Customer Service being good, understanding, empathetic- its all crap.

Written by someone who loves the phone, but hates the Apple policy on this,
15 years old in england but still worked to make the £600 needed to get the phone,
And disappointed by your personal response to a problem that is by no description trivial,

I just can't stand it when companies release products that they know have a problem and then they refuse to deal with the issue.

I'm currently in a battle with Dell over a laptop I bought that has major throttling issues that dell knew and knows about. But they wont acknowledge the existence of the problem.

Pain in my ass, but I thought apple was better about customer service than dell :confused:.
 
everyone just needs to chill out and wait for Apple's response, which is apparently forthcoming.

hopefully the fix is more substantial than just 'free bumpers'.
 
I am aware of Steve's initial comment. If you search the thread, I was one of the first appalled by it. By response in this context I mean Apple's attempt to fix to the issue. Which, again, is supposedly forthcoming.

From a different thread:

I phoned apple care, told them I had the antenna issue. He said he has to transfer me to his supervisor if it's about that.

When the supervisor answered he asked me in detail how it happens. He got me to do it while I was on the phone with him. He said the reason for this is that he has to forward all the details to the engineering department.

He then said that even though it's a hardware issue, the engineering department are working on a software fix for next week.

He said in the mean time he will send me a free bumper. However, he then said I might get the software fix before I receive the bumper, Monday prehaps?

Apple are on top of this, even though jobs thinks its not an issue- it's clearly become one.
