Hey genius: since you know that Apple didn't invent it, how about sharing with us who exactly did invent it?

I think they were the ones pushing the idea of USB Type C, technically it was their "invention", they just didn't develop it by themselves without any help.

My issue is the one port is for charging and accessories. If there had been the typical charging port and at least one accessory port it wouldn't have been as much of an issue.

I use my laptop everyday and I only use 1 USB port to transfer files wich takes like 5 minutes to do so. I can easily see that only 1 port won't be a problem for me, the problem will be the 480p camera and the slow processors.

Call me when Apple doesn't claim to have invented everything on the planet.

Apple didn't claim anything, at least read the article.

I do hate how a new standard is coming out every year. seriously, how many $80 adapters do we need to get. how about implement lightening port on everything? they said lightening on iOS for the next 10 year right…

that and it's too much "clutter."
More likely physically too large. Perhaps they could have done an even thinner and smaller MagSafe 3, but you would have just bitched about that too. Like you bitched about MagSafe 2.

Then again, since the Air and this new Macbook will have all day battery life. There isn't much reason to need a power cord during the day. I mean, sure the power cord / adapter in your backpack like you do for an iPad. You don't leave your iPad tethered, do you? No, you disconnect it and take and use it.

Ditching the magsafe and only putting in one port for EVERYTHING is just plain and simple: ridiculous.

And also bumping prices by 200 euros making their TotL Macbook Pro 2800 instead of 2600 is just taking the piss.

Starting to lose my patience with Apple.

(For reference: I own a MBP TotL, iPhone 6 and iPad 4)

you dont see a reason for an extremely biased mouthpiece to say something like this?

initially a concentrated group will hear but it will it will spread.

even if it is true i can find no logical reason to actually break the "story" besides causing some friction.

I see several reasons for him to say it, yes. I don’t see any reason for him to lie about it.

What would he have to gain? It wouldn’t lead more people to his podcast, because most people will read it on a third party site (i.e., here) and not bother about the source. And if it even drove more people to DaringFireball, he wouldn’t get more ad revenue, because The Deck doesn’t deal in impressions — he gets a fixed rate each month.

And if it’s not true, it’ll eventually come out (another company that was involved in the development may decide to leak some information, for example). In which case, Gruber’s reputation will receive a large knock (though I’m sure he’d find some way to spin it.)

The “logical reason” to break the story is because it’s interesting, and it leads to interesting questions such as “will iOS devices eventually switch to USB Type-C?”.

i dont think you need to break the story (however true it is) to talk about wether ios devices will swith to usb-c. there have been plenty of comments and questions about that the last week.

i also dont think hes doing it for personal/daring fireball glory.

first of all i see no reason whatsoever to mention it other than to cause friction. to me its just another one of his posts where apple is the leader and rest are followers and all he needs to do is mention "a little birdie". i think its enough that he is as myopic as they come with regards to apples shortcomings compared to googles for instance that he dosent need to do blog this type of posts.

The prices going up 200 euros isn't apple being greedy, it's the currency in your country weakening against the US dollar right now.

Perhaps not the very next one but it's quite possible it will be happening in the near future.

I cannot fathom the uproar that ditching Lightning connection will cause on certain forums ;-) ... But I agree - especially with all those issues like standard charger regulations in the EU and the general capabilities of the new USB it would be a logical consequence.

I doubt it. Lightning is what keeps the iPhone ecosystem tightly controlled by apple through it's made for iPhone system.

I believe him. Standards bodies kinda work this way at times. Others may have made minor contributions or will make contributions in the future... Many times one company will have an immediate interest in getting something done. Other people will add contributions later. It's like how webkit started off when Apple first aquired it. Now google and others contribute.

Though pretty convenient when it's working right. If there's one thing I hate about corded peripherals, it's the cord.

I agree with you. Unfortunately as far as peripherals are concerned the only thing I hate more than cords is having to worry about batteries (keyboards, mouse etc). For me to go cable free they will also have to come up with a way to wirelessly charge efficiently as well (and I don't mean Qi).

If Apple actually brought the money they made back to the USA and paid taxes on it, you might have a point. But they continue to stash it offshore and avoid US taxes on it. The only exchange rate they need to take into account under their current strategy is the Chinese currency.

Nonsense...I have a brand new, lightweight, ultrabook PC right here that lasts about four hours in the real world and it's top of the line.

1. As a correction I actually mean "what we have come to expect from our Apple laptops". My apologies for the omission.

2. 4 hours? Ouch...What model is it?

if this is true, i say fine. i am sure this is a good thing. The MAJOR concer I have is that Apple just created the lightning port standard for their mobile line and the thunderbolt standard for their laptop/destop lines. Magsafe is also another Apple standard although that is ONLY for power and not data transfer.

I understand when Apple creates standards because they are ahead of the industry. I just dont understand when they create so many standards that compete with themselves. as much as it will cause short term pain, if Apple is real about USB-C, then move all laptops, iPads and iPhones to this standard with the next release.

Since I have a couple of tablets now my laptop has basically became a desktop connected to a 50" Sony. I have to keep it plugged in because I don't use the battery. I also usually keep a 7 port Anker hub half full most of the time. I have to believe i'm not the only person that uses more than one port.
