They sold roughly a million a month in 2007 and in 2008. 4 million phones in 2007, and almost 12million in 2008. Considering the first 2-3 months were slow due to the non-subsidized cost, and the store didn't come out until June 08, I'd say the app store didn't affect iphone sales all that much right out of the box. Now that there is competition from droid, etc. it is certainly a major selling point.

They sold ok in the first year but sales really took off with the introduction of the 3G and the App Store in July 2008.

Sounds like it may be taking up too much resources to add two-way video chat.

If that were the only issue they could offer crippled bandwidth initially just to check the box and offer the capability despite bandwidth limits, or, offer it wifi or docked only. To cripple it 100% would be silly.

What is more likely is the tablet will not have a traditional camera because the screen is an image sensor.

It would also allow scanning of medical records.

why are people so adamant about there being a camera?

are you going to take a photo or shoot video with a 10" device?

is it really an ideal situation to have a videoconference where you have to hold the device in front of you?

It's just because people have failed to find any use for this device so far. Video chat was one of the candidates and now it's gone.

It's amazing that people will even justify it not not having a camera. All this indicates now is that it's main function is an e-reader. It will be a more powerful because of the App Store but at the end of the day it's just an e-reader.

If that's what you need or if it just floats you're boat, then go for it but it will be a niche product. I guess Apple is at the point where they can go into this area.

See this -> Apple's patent for an LCD display that also takes photos, video

Could be uber-uber-cool if the camera sensed your gestures in 3d - slightly above the tablet - but that may be asking too much.

I was going to bring this point up if noone else did. Engadget did a piece on this back in 2006. I think 4 years is a pretty good lead that we could now see this in action.

I don't think so. Read Gruber's statement again:

And, for what it's worth, I'm hearing there is no camera, webcam or otherwise, on The Tablet.

If Apple removes the camera, which are dirt cheap, Apple is sending a clear message about what this product is meant to do.

I don't believe this rumor...Apple has been a pioneer with cameras on Portable computers. Although a few people had it on their laptops before the Macbook Pro, it really moved PC makers to do that.

However, I must admit that Apple has really dropped the ball on the iPhone.

I don't believe this either. No way they expect to sell 10 million of these things in the first year and not have a camera.

I expect this rumor to be false.

Yes, there is no point in having a camera on the back of the Tablet to take photos like with an iPhone due to its size, but why not put a camera on the front for use as a webcam? If this thing tries to compete with netbooks, it has to "do the internet" in every possible way, meaning that it has to support video conferencing.

Then again, a Tablet cannot stay upright on a table without you holding it, so a video conference would be quite awkward holding the tablet all the time...

That's easy. Sell a dock for the tablet. And this way, Apple can make even more money.

OMG! You're the first person who's thought of this!!!1!

Actually, I think having a camera would be handy. Have you seen Microsoft's "Courier" concept video? That thing has a camera. Why shouldn't this tablet have one?

I think they're just saving it for RevB.

How's this for a wacky idea (and hello to all of you... this is my first contribution to the forums)

Perhaps the new tablet will be geared specifically to operate WITH the iPhone. So, you hook your iPhone up to the tablet and that gives you your webcam, and it doesn't matter that the camera is on the 'wrong' side of the phone. It'd also (assuming exclusivity) behoove people to have both an iPhone AND a tablet device. In this case, you don't have to build any iPhone functionality directly into the tablet... it could leverage the iPhone when connected, and have its own set of functions that don't make the phone redundant.

...or am I nuts?

I don't know...is it nuts to post the same thing someone did 11 posts before? or is that just stealing? ;)

Nope, RevB is the planned release of copy/paste!

Of course it won't have a "camera"! Apple will call it the "iEye" (yes, lame, I know) or something more than just a camera.

The iPhone and iSlate will be integrated in other ways. I don't believe the iSlate will have 3G. WiFi and Bluetooth only. But I do expect the iSlate to be the first device that works with the iPhone for "legal" tethering through AT&T. AT&T said it was coming, they just didn't say when. I say it's going to happen when the iSlate gets released. Price? An extra $20-$30 per month on top of your existing iPhone account. I'd sign up for that! That's WAY better than another $60 per month for a dedicated 3G data card built into the iSlate.

You'll hear all about it on January 26 (or is it the 27th now?). :)

ATT can't even handle the traffic the iPhone draws, let alone a bunch of people tethering an even more medai centric device to it. Whatever they end up doing, if it has a cell radio I don't see ATT as being the exclusive carrier.

Still holding out hope for something small (~7-9"), semi-cheap, and with some form of free (or at least free with MobileMe) data connection ala the Kindle (even if it's limited to iTMS, email, and a couple of other sites like wikipedia, Facebook and/or Twitter, etc).

Also, I forgot to hit the quote button on the comment, but to whoever said they thought this was smelling like the AppleTV: I hope so, I love my AppleTV!

That's strange. I've just read a conflicting report from mactweeter.com by Apple partner Orange.fr confirming that the new tablet will have a built-in camera.

Who then turned around and said he was misunderstood.

At this point, you can find a rumor about the tablet that gives it any property you want. Camera? Check. No camera? Check. iTunes ebook store? Check. No itunes ebook store? Check. 7"? Check. 10"? Check. OLED? Check. PixelQi? Check. LCD? Check. Made of green cheese with a tangy barbecue flavor? Check.
