Most versatile was the 17" with a multitude of ports, expansion card slot, standard storage drive and optical drive which could be easily replaced by with a second storage device.

The new ones are little more versatile than the MacBook. And if most people need docks to make it useable why bother spending more for the "pro" version?

Lololololol

Joining the exodus. My next computer will not be a macbook pro (current 15 inch user). No usb port is downright insane. You can't even backup your iPhone 7 to your laptop now without a dongle... wtf apple. No SD card slot. This is ridiculous. Can't even plug a damn flash drive into the new macbook pro. My next desktop will be a PC and I will not be buying a new apple laptop.

yeah my love with macbook pros is over.

I have a 2015 model and I'll hold onto this one for aslong as I can. No more system updates. I use the SD card slot + USB daily, love the mag safe charger, the keyboard is a joy to type on and I rarely do use the HDMI port which is a convenient blessing and allows my MBP to become a HTPC seamlessly.

The OLED screen is experimental technology with no clear benefit IMO.
The thinness is just unnecessary.
The lack of USB ports is pathetic.
The lack of HDMI/SD card slot for certain people can be a deal breaker.
Trading in best in-class keyboard for butterfly
Trading in little iconic features like the flowing apple symbol at the front

Its just not a pro device in anyway shape or form. Its basically what the macbook should have been minus the touchbar. Its sad because MBPs have the best build quality, aesthetics and I'm in love with OS X / iMessages / FaceTime.

My next mac purchase will probably be an iMac as I want to stay in the OS X eco system as I really do love it. And I don't believe they can really mess it up like they have with the MBP. Its amazing value provided they stop gimping the base model. To get a decent to semi powerful machine with that beautiful display and basic peripherals is still one of the best premium deals I can think of.

My next laptop purchase will unlikely be a macbook unless the need for SC cards and USB drives dramatically dwindles in the next 2-3 years. I personally don't see it happening as they all serve their purpose quite comfortably and I'm in no hurry to carry around a dongle on a premium device. I probably will still need laptop and i'll end up going down whoever steps up their game battery life wise.

I look at the new 2016/17 MBP, compare it to my early 2015 MBP... and I can't easily discern which one is better. Apple have really dropped the ball. The fact you can't connect your iPhone 7 with the new MBP without a dongle sums up just out far away they are from the vision of "it just works". They need to listen and add in an SD card slot, usb etc. but I fear their profits from the dongles will stop them from sucking up their pride.

Yep. Sums it up for me. Insane that it doesn't have a USB port. You can't plug in an iPhone or a freaking usb flash drive. Insane. They really dropped the ball.

I feel really conflicted by this thread and the thought of leaving Mac. The only fact that keeps me relaxed is my 2012 15 MBP is probably still as good as the non touchbar 13'', and I have a working Mac still.

You can buy a $30 adaptor that has all of that and then you'll have 3 more ports to do whatever you want.

This argument is dumb.

Hahaha no they didn't. At least not with the argument you're making.

For such a commonly used form of port, adaptor should really be included in the packaging at the least. Although in reality, an SD card slot and a USB port at a minimum should just be on the device IMO. Its just too commonly used and its so unwieldy to have to carry a dongle or keep one attached. It defeats the point of that beautiful form factor if every ten minutes you have to find a dongle or keep one plugged in for convenience sake.

I'd do that on a gimped cheap ass laptop with no complaints but not for one priced this high with a pro label!

I think apple could have avoided a lot of flack and actually provided nicely constructed dongles in the box. They just keep taking away and adding more apple tax to everything. Its becoming far too much of a blatant rip off these days rather than paying for quality.

I just really don't understand it I guess. I can have this which has everything I'd need and what most people are complaining about (SD and 2 USB), plus another USB-C to charge or whatever. Then you still have your other 3 ports.

These ports can be ANYTHING you want them to be. Yes, dongles are necessary for a lot of stuff and for now, but that connector needs to become the standard. How does it do that? Apple making a decision like this. I'm sorry to those that it sucks for, but to not buy the computer (I'm not referring to you specifically) purely based on it not having a USB or SD card slot is dumb in my opinion.

I'm as annoyed with about all the faults of the new MacBook Pro as most of you but I think the dongle complaint has been blown out of proportion. I have the rMB 12 inch and carrying the HooToo shuttle pretty much takes care of why legacy port needs. It's not that heavy nor is it that really cumbersome. Everyone has different uses but usually when you need to plug in stuff, you're sitting at a desk anyway.

I couldn't believe I would one day say&do this. Have been through enough Apple launches where new features and omissions initially didn't make sense, but as soon as I tried the product and played around with it a little they grew on me and eventually seemed the new normal.

Not so with the new Macbook Pro. Having used it for 4 days I can say with confidence that -- while it is a sleek device with a gorgeous screen -- I'm going to have to return what I got and learn to appreciate the competition.

A list of things that have bothered the heck out of me:

-- The lack of Macsafe is far more frustrating than I imagined. I miss the ease of plugging it in when I'm on the sofa, compared to the frustrating shoving with the USB-C. It's also really hard to remove at times! It also protrudes more and is less...safe. Also I have to get rid of all my old chargers...

-- The lack of a port for my displays. Just thought Thunderbolt/MDP had been established as the norm and now I can't use my three home and work displays without dongles? And there isn't even one from Apple offering 4k@60Hz. Crazy.

-- The lack of SD card slot. I use my MBP while on trips and excursions with the family. I put the SD card in all the time to offload things and check photos/videos I've taken. I can't do this with a dongle. I also can't transfer with a USB cable because it's too slow and hell that's another dongle to keep track off!

-- The lack of dedicated USB ports for charging my devices like my phone.

-- No 32 GB option. Ridiculous.

What's so infuriating about the lack of ports is that it wasn't necessary for Apple to omit these for the sake of slimming the laptop down. The tapering is so excessive (all in the name of showing off, not practical design) that significant height real estate got lost. That's not a good argument for omitting arguably one of the most important features of a personal computer -- connections.
I was considering the new MBPtb, but I never thought about all the inconvenience as you pointed out. Do you suggest getting one of the 2016 rMBP that's available now?

I have been holding out for about 3 months now in updating as I was eagerly awaiting the new machines.. I am still considering the MBP but have started looking at an XPS 13 and a Yoga 910 much more seriously..

I am a simple home user so the base models of all are fine for me. I also do not need a ton of ports. I do use SD cards a lot mainly from my GoPro.. I do have a SD card to USB adapter and I even have a USB C to USB adaper already so that's not really an issue.

I was 99% sure I wanted the new Macbook. After seeing the announcement that quickly dropped to about 60% and now after playing with it in the Apple store, I am down to about 30%.....

It's seriously overpriced for you you get. Yes it's a beautiful and well made machine but 2 ports, no magsafe and $1500 for the base model? WOW!

I can get a Yoga 910 from the MS store for $1079 plus tax after EDU discount -v- $1449 plus tax for the Macbook after EDU discount... Pound for pound and spec for spec the Yoga demolishes the Macbook..

I am still considering the Macbook though.. I love MacOS and prefer it over Windows...

All excellent points. Never thought id say this but i may have an XPS in my future.

And the Nvidia 1050ti, the likely card in the XPS in the January refresh has just been benchmarked... and it is insane.

Wow, I can't believe the number of fanboys out there ready to defend Jony et al's every move even when the purpose is evidently to boost their margins.
I bet the day apple releases a portless, induction charging "pro" laptop that is supposed to do everything wirelessly, their loyal servants will be there trying to explain to the rest of us why this is the future and that everything that came before this ingenious move is just legacy. Lame.

I really wish people could put aside their bias and just admit when something is good. I like apple too, but I just talked to a guy in another thread that freely says everything out there that isn't a MacBook is inferior. I just...retreat in disappointment over humanity and how we don't have the capacity for critical thinking.

Some of these windows laptops are surprisingly good. But most people here won't admit it. They go into every experience with a non apple product ready to hate it

So many people saying they are getting out, and here I am jumping back in since 2009. I do like the new update. Just not sure if I am ready to give up my gaming PC yet. I still game waaaay more on console lately.

My plan is to get a new computer in 2018, see what Apple has to offer in terms of its MacBook Pro and what I am doing on my desktop front. Id rather get a laptop that has a good gpu, and is thin and draws less power. I use a 15 inch MBP that work gave me and I enjoy it a lot. It can really be a good all around machine for my work flow.

I think most of the whiners here are people that have a recent macbook/pro. For me, I'm on a 2008 macbook and the new MBP non-TB looks awesome coming from that.

Everything you listed you knew before you bought the machine and you did it anyway which is amazing.
It's sounds to me that you should just buy the 2015 version instead. Nothing wrong with that version. Leave the 2016 version to those that don't have so many of your hindrances impairing their usage.

Also insane that there is no CD drive. LOL. Regular USB has been given a terminal sentence. Apple needs to set up some education sessions to help the common folk here learn how to wirelessly transfer things and move onto USB-C peripherals. I haven't connected a phone to a computer in years, and I travel sans USB key now as you can Bluetooth over anything with greater ease and less virus risk.

MagSafe: Okay, I get its. I loved MagSafe too. But with the USB-C we also can charge from an external charger on the go when an outlet is not nearby. I have an Anker that will fully charge it. I do like this a lot.

Dongles, while a pain, it's part of the transition for ALL PC's to USB-C. It's not only Mac going that way, although they are diving in head first! I accept it and am GLAD that USB-C is here as it is an open standard and not proprietary to Apple. This will be good in the long run IMO.

SD card slot. As a photographer, I do miss it. However, the thing was always VERY slow IMO. I have ONE external "dongle" hub that gives me SD, HDMI and 3 USB 3.0 ports.

USB ports, to get the size down, they don't fit. Again, I'm all for a head first dive in here.

32G option. Yes, it would impact battery life. It will come in the next update with the newer processors that can handle it more efficiently. The Skylake processor that can handle it well enough to do the job right was not fully available. The new Kaby Lake was not avail in the quad core version needed for the 15". http://www.idownloadblog.com/2016/1...could-also-be-blamed-on-intels-skylake-chips/

From that article: "The true reason behind the lack of 32GB RAM on the new MacBook Pro is Intel. Skylake chips do not support LPDDR4 RAM. Kaby Lake is set to include support, but only for the U category of chips. So no LPDDR4 support for mobile until 2018 I think." ...."
“U category” of chips denotes low-power versions of Intel processors meant for ultra-thin notebooks like the MacBook Air and the twelve-inch MacBook. These chips are typically slower than their non-U counterparts, but conserver more power.

In other words, Skylake lacks hardware support for power-sipping RAM chips that could let Apple engineer a 32GB Mac notebook that didn’t sacrifice battery life. The new Pro uses a faster 2133MHz LPDDR3 RAM that consumes more power than the slower 1600 MHz RAM in the previous-generation."

According to Schiller, the SD card slot was cumbersome - beats me how the fug he would describe the routine use of this. I also use the MB daily and love it by the way, and I may purchase a HooToo soon, but it just shows Schiller and his colleagues up for the cretins that they are over the unnecessary removal of ports and price gouging in the latest update.

Same here waited patiently for the 2016 MBP refresh of the MBP. My 2014 13" rMBP is now replaced by a Microsoft i7 Surface Book, too little, too late, and too expensive for the value it represents. My systems are employed professionally so they must deliver, Apple is too far off the mark, catering for a different target audience.

One of the forum members named 2016 MBP as the "MacBook Amateur", personally I believe "Pro" very much still stands, only the paradigm has shifted to "Profit" over the customers needs; ever ridiculously priced in-house upgrades, dongles that Apple make dollars for every cent it spends o_O

The fate if the 15" rMBP remains to be seen, equally I have deferred any consideration of the new MBP until 2017/2018; 460 dGPU or better needs to be default and 32Gb needs to be an option. First time I have ever deferred or not bought a MBP since Apple brought them to the market...

Q-6
[doublepost=1478331569][/doublepost]

I now have a new Surface Book and have been pushing it to see how it performs. To date it has been absolutely rock sold. Intel & MS fixed the graphics driver issue earlier this year. Be assured there have been times when some of my Mac`s have come very close to being convertibles due to instability of the OS :)

Q-6

I dunno. Personally, I'm partial to calling it the MacBook Prototype. "Let's try these things and see what we can get away with." It's like they threw a bunch of ideas against the wall, and are waiting to see which ones stick.

Gaming laptops <<< desktop IMO

A laptop with a 1050 would most likely not be considered a gaming laptop. In fact, if Apple were to go with NVIDIA, they would probably choose the 1050 over the higher end ones. 1060/1070/1080 laptops would be considered that, and they have been out for a few weeks already.

Just a side note to a few posters here.

The old model of the surface book used the "U" version of skylake, with the 15w processor.

The updated surface book "i7" or "performance", whatever it is called, has a more powerful dgpu and uses the higher wattage Skylake processors.

So moving to the the surface book won't be a step down in power, but it's relatively the same price wise.
