Ive is past it as a designer.
He should be shipped back to England to open a chippy in Blackpool, like his dear old Mum always wanted him to.

Cuz urine.
Nah, if anything, Jony is just going through a mid career lull. About five years ago, he lost a dear friend, colleague and collaborator, Steve, and these things take time, maybe years, to recover from personally and professionally. Ive is human. I think Ive is about to head towards one of the most interesting and productive periods in his life. Apple needs to support Ive in his creative endeavours by allowing him to demand custom components in devices and not stock standard items that bulge like cameras on iPhone 6.

I love Jony Ive. He's one cool intelligent person. The passion on display when he speaks is really inspiring. He is also one of the major reasons Apple has been incredibly successful in the past 20 years.

On a different note. Ken Seagull, previously marketing consultant for Apple and the person who coined the "i" product naming convention, has documented his work with Steve Jobs when choosing colours for the original iMac, yellow was one of the prototypes. Yellow was shut down though by Steve who had named the colour as "piss yellow". Hate to say it, this iPad is looking a little piss yellow. Maybe metallic yellow just doesn't translate too well in photos.

Saying that, the combination of
blue, white, orange, yellow is very pleasing.

Which three? Blue, yellow and white? I looked at their website and saw no orange anywhere, or really even blue for that matter, but I did see fuchsia as a primary accent color which is nowhere to be found on the iPad.

My guess is red, white, and blue reference the British Flag, while the chartreuse yellow references their signs and graphic work. These primary colors played an important role in many of Kenneth Grange's industrial designs, one of Jony Ives heroes. He is a prolific British design icon.

Bonus showing the colors on the exterior during the exhibit in 2011.

Apple touts itself as one of the "greenest" companies, yet they persist in using leather accessories for their products. Not cool Apple. Slaughter houses are the antithesis of going "green". So while I applaud their use of green technology, I hope they stop using leather. Then they can brag all they want.

Changing the color of the anodizing for one unit is not that groundbreaking (and I'm an Apple fan to a fault). Even if the body were red in color, it would have at least been pretty. I don't know what they were thinking, anyone can have this done themselves without doubling the price of the iPad. If they just used the red from the iPod RED and put tripple the memory in it, it would have had more of a "wow" factor, but this? Underwhelming, even for a token charity piece.

I think you're confusing the term "green" with "vegan".

Apple really needs to end the use of leather immediately and instead used natural or degradable synthetic materials that move us all forward. Leather is such a dated concept. The skin of an animal on an electronic device?? "What the??" - Says the people of the future reading history.

In my case at least, it is not really about the actual item, it is about the self-congratulatory superlative bullshine description. Time to get over themselves. Just say it is a one off fun color combination to make money for a place set apart to allow this elite group of designers/artists to pat each other on the back. It's not even for a good cause.

I suspect that all this charity projects he's done over the years with Apple is considered a tax write off. Something to consider.

I don't find it impressive, either and think he could do so much better than that. Why didn't he just engrave his artwork by hand entirely on the aluminum backing of the iPad? It would've made it much more unique of a piece to be showcased.

What's "French leather"? Serious question... is there polish leather too? or german leather?
What's Corinthian leather? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corinthian_leather

Corinthian leather is a term coined by the advertising agency Bozell to describe the upholstery used in certain Chrysler luxury vehicles. The term first appeared in advertising in 1974. Although the term suggests that the product has a relationship to or origination from Corinth, there is no relationship; the term is merely a marketing concept.

Design process:

Ive: Hey boss, I'm doing this charity thing and to preserve its exclusivity I need a combination of colors that we will never ever use for commercial products in the future.

Cook: How about this clashing yellow, blue and orange?

Ive: I'll take it!
The colors are essentially primary colors. They work. They don't clash.

Do you make donations to charities (many/most people do). Do you write your donations off your taxes? Something to consider.

Nice try defending the fruity company. Are you defending this garbage?

They have no reason to keep doing charities every time when they should be spending more time and energy on their products.

Jony should've retired already. He's burnt out. The company needs a new design language to shake things up. And Tim is part of the problem.

Jony Ive's design team has created a one-of-a-kind 12.9-inch iPad Pro, iPad Pro Smart Cover, and Apple Pencil holder that will be auctioned off as part of a fundraiser for the London Design Museum, reports Wallpaper.

The iPad Pro has been anodized with a bright yellow dye, making it unique among Apple's standard color lineup of Space Gray, Silver, Gold, and Rose Gold. Compared to the Gold iPad Pro, it's a much brighter, more vibrant shade of yellow.

Accompanying the yellow iPad Pro is Smart Cover made from a blue French leather and an Apple Pencil ensconced in an orange Italian calf leather case. According to the auction listing, the iPad Pro's back and the Smart Cover are etched with the words "Edition 1 of 1."

The iPad Pro has an estimated value of GBP10,000 - 15,000, the amount it is expected to fetch at auction. It will be available to bid on starting on April 28.

Apple has donated specially designed items for charity auctions several times in the past, with Jony Ive creating a red Mac Pro and solid gold EarPods, among other items.

Damn I think I heard a loud creaking noise!! YES, it's the sound of Steve's coffin opening...he's rolling in his grave trying to get out so he can tell Jony himself: "you're coloring it wrong!"
All you people saying that's piss coloured aren't drinking enough water.
Now available in Exclusive Apple Colour, Piss-Yellow.
Another Jony Ive triumph! From the man who brought you the iPhone that bends, the iOS that you can't decipher, and the MacOS that has alienated fans worldwide. Yes, keep up the good job, Jony!
You need to drink some water my friend.
Introducing the iPeed
By the looks of that (and camera bulge etc) it's safe to confirm that Ive has indeed lost his touch.
That thing is ugly.
That's urine yellow.
Edit:
I'm glad I'm not the only one to think so.

Nice obfuscation...

Since you called into question Ive/Apple making charitable donations and writing them off taxes, I asked if you also have made charitable donations.

Since you have deliberately evaded the question, I'll assume you do not make donations to charities.

Rather than worry so much about how others engage and choose to give to charities, perhaps you might consider your own behavior first.

Well, red does not seem to be a color. Though the picture you posted does appear to be orange, so assuming those are the colors - orange, white and blue, then I see the association. Though not with the British flag. Either way, I don't see it anywhere on their website, which is predominately chartreuse and fuschia ... No orange, no blue.

Regardless, that kind of bold color combo like that is very late 80s early 90s (as evidenced by the special PowerBook 170 posted earlier). As a retro tribute I guess it's cool. As a significant design contribution it's a bit dated.

I used to donate to charities but have provided work pro bono to a non profit club.

I will question Apple's charity work as tax write offs. They have tons of money that's being sat on and some on off shore accounts. So why bother with tax write offs when they're dodging them outside the USA?

Take off your Apple glasses. They have you brainwashed badly.

Oh, and one more thing. Apple is NOT a person but an entity. It doesn't give a **** about anyone. That, itself, is an illusory front they exude.

Well.... Because you care so deeply about Apple's (and every other large company's) legal tax compliance, rather than rant about that on a tech forum where nobody is paying any attention to you, why not write your Congress members to have the tax laws changed? I know, that does require some work on your part. Far easier to rant on a forum.

Well, Apple does use a variety of offshore structures and arrangements to shift billions of dollars to other countries such as Ireland. For example, in the USA, the corporate tax rate is 40%, while Apple has negotiated a special corporate tax rate in Ireland of less than 2%. Apple doesn't have to go down this route, but it has unfortunately:

Ummm. Just as shallow as we are for slamming it , you are praising its merits....based on a photo.

You are also missing the big picture here, from a bloke who has designed some fantastic apple products , and given how much apple in the bank, this is piss weak. It's just a new colour. His previous one off were actual design changes, is is a stock iPad.

You will find that people saw very little innovation and design when apple updated the colours on the iPods. Same people posting here. We love apple design and innovations, this this has neither, Stock with a new paint job.

You also seem to miss the entire point of my comment. Yes it is just a new color, BUT it will help raise a large amount of money for an important cause. There were no changes to the custom red Mac Pro that raised almost a MILLION dollars. When you or anyone here personally donates a million dollars, then I will actually entertain their opinion, but I highly doubt that someone as giving and compassionate enough to give that much money would care much about the color a product.

Have you ever been to a charity silent auction. The items usually aren't especially unique or different and most could be purchased for much less somewhere else, BUT charity auctions in large raise a ton of money. I don't have the means to donate $1,000,000, but I recently attended an charity auction for a brain rehababilitation center. I ended up bidding for and ultimately winning an autographed sports team jersey that had a small logo patch on one of the sleeves of the rehab facility. Yes, I could have gone and purchased a similar autographed jersey somewhere else for a fraction of the price and slapped a patch on it, but TBI rehabilition programs are important to me personally. It's not the item itself, but it is the idea and purpose behind the item. I just don't understand the point you are trying to make when the whole idea of these events is to do some good in the world.

Continue to rant about the color and lack of new and great designs from Jonny Ive all you want (I'm not saying I even disagree), but I probably won't respond because I think I might go spend the afternoon at that local rehab program because this has reminded me of the good we could do instead of arguing about pretty much anything.
