I don't see why people are complaining. Would you have been happier if Apple had actually reserved a better color scheme for this custom iPad, instead of making it accessible to consumers?

I guess some people, including myself, expect something more personal or unique for such an occasion. If you look at the website, the iPad sticks out like a sore thumb. There are actual pieces of art and craftsmanship in that auction, some really crazy stuff. This iPad is not special in any way, it is the same iPad that Apple produces for less than $200, only with a custom colour anodisation. If you want that look, you can repaint the back of your iPad too. The only original thing is the Apple Pencil case.

I introduce to you, the Apple Car!!!

Almost like Saul Goodman's car in "Better Call Saul". Ya know where my head is at...lol

What's "French leather"? Serious question... is there polish leather too? or german leather?

I know there is English leather. It's to do with the hide selection process and tanning procedure. English leather is very strong due to the way it's made, but it's expensive.

EDIT:

Found this online, it might help:

"English leather" is leather tanned by the English process. A "Made in England" mark is no guarantee that the leather is tanned English-- it could be tanned French, or American, as these are all different tanning styles and don't really refer to the LOCATION in which the leather was tanned.

The quality of leather is almost exclusively determined by the currying process--Indian leather for example may not be curried at all, whereas a quality English hide is curried and greased by hand.

English leather is of notoriously high quality, but it is also much tougher than French leather and thus is more durable.

If this was an iPhone I'd say Apple really phoned this one in. Ive must have been staring at his Golden St. Warriors schedule when the donation request came though. :D

I completely agree.

Someone will pay lots of money who likes it. There only needs to be one.

Like many people have said, I don't particularly find it appealing either, but that is a good thing for a unique customised piece I'll never even have the chance to own, let alone want to! I hope it raises lots of money for the museum.

Heh, for all we know, some good friend of Ive or Tim just slams down a million dollars on the auction, just to show his support, even when they don't need an iPad. Apple gets the good press.

Or maybe some hardcore Apple fan appreciates it enough to bid a good price for it? People have done crazier things in the name of "charity".

The way I see it, it's really no different from a celebrity auctioning a used handbag they previously owned, or an autographed T-shirt, and donating the proceeds to charity. It's practically zero effort on their part.

It may be for charity, but I don't really want Apple to be spending so much time and resources towards customising a 1-time product when the same resources could be devoted to creating newer products.

By the looks of that (and camera bulge etc) it's safe to confirm that Ive has indeed lost his touch.

That thing is ugly.

Jony lost his "touch" a long time ago or did you not see the uglified (flat 2D) mitigated unbelievably SLOW disaster that was called "Yosemite" ? (Not that he didn't have lots of "help" from employees ordered to make his vision of flat colors and no style come true turning stoplight "gems" into 4-year old paint splotches, etc.)

Now they want to remove "X" and put back the "Mac" part and just call it "MacOS" or "macOS" to go with their other generic crap names like watchOS and carOS and tvOS (all SOOOO original). Once Apple releases their first snow blower you'll have blowOS, followed by their smart grill called grillOS, etc. Yeah, forget about "One OS to rule them all" like Microsoft envisions; Apple wants 10,000 OSes to laugh at (all based on OS X, but none of them called that anymore because you know, they want to erase all memory of Steve Jobs and his legacy to make it the Jony Ive show instead).

Reminds me of the El Centro building in Chicago, perhaps an inspiration for Ive? The attached photo isn't the greatest, but search the web for images and you'll see how the building is blue from one viewpoint and yellow from the opposite side.

I must have no taste on art or designing... I just don't find any artistic about these desgin. A twisted speaker set? Why? Oh well, that is why I am not art student

You last point is a really good one. We have to keep these sort of things in perspective.

Then again, for all the 'genius' of Johnny Ive, it seems like he could 'half-ass' a better attempt than this. It's like a world renowned artist being asked to do a quick sketch and producing a picture a kindergartener would bring home from school.

It's been said many times here, but Johnny needed Steve to be a ying to his yang. And unchecked Johnny is just an eccentric designer who truly believes any idea that comes into his head is perfect.

I love Jony Ive. He's one cool intelligent person. The passion on display when he speaks is really inspiring. He is also one of the major reasons Apple has been incredibly successful in the past 20 years.

On a different note. Ken Seagull, previously marketing consultant for Apple and the person who coined the "i" product naming convention, has documented his work with Steve Jobs when choosing colours for the original iMac, yellow was one of the prototypes. Yellow was shut down though by Steve who had named the colour as "piss yellow". Hate to say it, this iPad is looking a little piss yellow. Maybe metallic yellow just doesn't translate too well in photos.

Saying that, the blue, white, red, yellow combination is very pleasing.

Their website looks as bad as the iPad. No one is saying the color of the iPad was a poor choice given the color choices of the museum. They're saying it's an ugly color. What's wrong with that?

Nothing wrong with that at all. The color is, ah, an acquired taste. I would read and interprete a view statements here a bit differently, though, but it really doesn't matter too much.

In the bigger scheme of things and other latest design calamities coming out from Ive's office like the Hump Back Battery Case, Magic Mouse Charging Port, Thin-Form-over-function-iMac, etc, I consider this harmless :p

I think they forgot the flash! But love the colors. I wish he'd design an apple pen cover for us!

Sorry the thread is so negative when this goes to a worthy cause.

Most posters probably couldn't even tell us who Eames is so I'm thinking its a bunch of younger folks with no sense of what good is design is or maybe They don't have anything positive to say in the first place. Sad really that people can't support the thought effort!

I guess one issue is that he could have been asked to divert resources away from something he might not even care about in the first place. This whole thing of creating a custom iPad for charity sounds more like a PR move, rather than something he initiated, and I won't blame him for going about it with the least effort required.

Besides, none of the products here are brand new, except maybe the pencil case, which looks it could simply be some 3rd party holder. Do we really need Jon Ive to have the final word on how to colour the iPad and smart cover? If you ask me, it's like some worker on the ground did it in one afternoon and is simply using Ive's influence to add some clout to the whole affair.

When the story of this period of Apple is written (and it WILL be written), it will (unsurprisingly) reveal a lot of executive churn, in-fighting among teams, a distracted CEO, bored and burned-out CDO, and rudderless R and D trying to steer boondoggle after boondoggle (ie, Project Titan). How does this story end? Stay tuned!

So you think that there isn’t anything creative about it? These are purely creative pieces.

Okay finally someone in this thread.

I kept getting more frustrated reading "eww just ugly, stupid lolz" hoping I could not be the only person who frequents this site older than 14.

This is actually a very good colour scheme, I am no expert but I see a good colour pattern there. I believe the designer term is the colours are negative to each other. Each go nicely against the other in layman terms.

Now I do not believe Mr Ive suggested anything radical or brilliant, I am sure the blue, orange, pale yellow combination has been done before. Though I do feel it is a nice colour combination that brings a feeling of easygoing and comfortable, I can truly see where Ive was coming from and believe he continues to know what he is doing.

I wholeheartedly disagree. Why such hate?

I wonder about that myself.

Hopefully, once those that do make it into college develop a little more introspection, maturity, and reasoning skills by the time they get out.

Still, I'll always be amazed on how some people let Apple have so much power over their lives, to the point where they get all frothed up with the shakes. Letting a company have that much power over one's life, about tech products no less, is not healthy.

Wow… I find it hard to believe this guy is said to have brought us some of the greatest, most beautiful and even timeless industrial designs in personal computing when I see this… truly feeling sad… where has his magic gone to?
To the grave with Steve Jobs. May Jobs and Jony's skills RIP.
