What's with the pretentious "Jony Ive Designs...." headline?

He painted a trash can Mac Pro red. Nothing more.

And it's not a stroke of design genius to do nothing more than paint a "Product (Red)" item red.

You beat me to it. "Designs" is quite the stretch.

Regardless, it looks great.

Boy, this is histerical

Apple paints it devices a color not black or white (like the 'gold iphone' and this 1-off Mac Pro) and the troops damned near soil themselves.

Really funny, especially since Apple could very easily paint/anodize their devices a whole host of colors but choose not to for two simple reasons:

1. Brand recognition...Apple single-handedly made plain white a 'cool' color so much so that it has transcended businesses: the most desired color for cars in the USA is now WHITE replacing long time 1# color silver. And of course plain black...ditto the reasoning.
2. It keeps the manufacturing process simple to focus on what is most important...the inside of the device in question.

Folks, calm down...its just paint or power-coating.

And in response to "What have any of you done for charity, lately?" from a previous post, well I contribute at least 10% of my gross wages to charity (BTW non-religious ones) . It really isn't that hard to do.

tl;dr - who cares. It's for charity.

There is nothing to critique here. This is not the FUD hate thread you're looking for. Move along.

Yeah, I'm not really bothered one way or another, and I do think the red Mac Pro does have a nice style thing going for it. But my contract states I have to post in every Apple-positive thread around here. These forums aren't gonna astroturf themselves, you know.

LOL!

I'm not sure I can upvote this enough.

That is a sweet looking machine. Now make an iPhone in that deep of a red and I'm sold.

I would love iphone or ipad in that red, but settle for the smart cover and ipod touch for now. ipod touch product red is my favorite color of anything apple I have ever owned.

Er, so you don't think he was involved in designing the Mac Pro? Seem to me this is a custom version of something he was part of designing. But hey, if he wasn't involved then all the people complaining about it will have to find some one else to blame. :D

Those are two completely separate topics. I never said he didn't have a part in designing the Mac Pro in itself. I actually don't know whether he did, or did not.

But the topic is the RED product. And unless I missed something, it's just a Mac Pro with red paint/color.

So MR used the word "designed" instead styled or customized. What's the big deal? But I guess if it is a big deal than Motorola needs to change their Moto X "designed by you" advertising since stylizing the phone case isn't designing.

WTF?!!! It's same machine but in red... how is that an exclusive Jonny Ive design?! Product (RED) is taking an existing product but having it in red and charging more for charity, I am really struggling to see what input Jonny Ive has made (if any!), other than agreeing to have his name associated with it.

I don't disagree with the cause it is supporting it... but it is complete b*llocks otherwise!

They give because they pretend to care, but in fact the amount they give is so low and needs so high it basicly comes to nothing.

While apple actually can spend to give a whole lot more. 100 million on lawsuits, tens of millions on lobbyists or the tens of billions it keeps overseas to not pay taxes on it.

It all screams profit making machine, so this paltry charity remains that.

$65 million "comes to nothing"? I'm afraid we'll never agree on this.

And, well, it is a profit making machine with a quite paltry amount to charity. That's the very point of publicly-traded companies. I'm not saying it's right (or wrong) but that's what it is. If you're outraged, then be outraged at the entire system of Western economics. Apple isn't doing anything out-of-line with the dictates of that system. (BTW, we also have not-for-profit companies. If Apple were one of those then, yes, it would be incredibly outrageous if they spent such a tiny amount on funding charitable activities.)

You should really be directing your outrage to Apple shareholders, both current and potential future ones, and their representatives (Apple's board of directors). If you can convince them that Apple should devote more of their profits to charity then it might actually happen. The company, and its profits, actually belong to them.

Am I the only one who thinks this is ugly as ****?

Does **** mean Natalie Portman?!? Because, then, yes, it's about as ugly as Natalie Portman!!!

Maybe it's Dadaism.

Who designed the new Mac Pro's case to begin with? Pretty sure Ive had a hand in that.
