I have the inside scoop:

The reason for this move is to allow Ive more time to devote to prayer, meekly kneeling upon his knees. The focus of his penitence is the protruding camera.

Now that Ive has designed his first fashion item, the Apple Watch, his next design will be a hairshirt.

am i the only one who see's this promotion as a step in the direction for becoming CEO of the company? Cook and Ive need each other. of course if Jony is tired of his career then he will retire, but thats just assumption. I see this as Jony familiarising himself further in leadership and more responsibility to do with the direction of the company.

I can't see Ive being CEO. He's a quiet design guy. Not a guy to lead the biggest company in the world and deal with the board and media.

So it's safe to say Jony is looking a little haggard and has put on a bit of timber. Surprising as until fairly recently he looked well-built... anyone else think he may actually be ill?

Well they made the announcement on a holiday and used a UK news source and Stephen Fry to do the write up. Ives probably picked him on purpose. Rumors have been around that he wants to spend more time in England with his family. He is set for life. He doesn't have anything left to prove design-wise. Apple went from two people over software design and hardware design to one with Ive and now they're breaking it up again but they'll be reporting to him. He clearly wants a reduced role. So yeah, Apple slowly transitions things out. But mark my words, this is the start of the end. Only wildcard is his loyalty to Steve's company. Personally I think he is slowly becoming disillusioned with where Apple is headed or his role in the company. I get that same sense from other users who have been around this site for a long time. Apple just isn't quite the same as it used to be. It's extremely difficult to pin it down precisely, but things are off. Hopefully just a bump in the road. They're still making great devices but a bit of the magic and passion is missing. Idk.

Excellent musing, if I may say so.

It must have been hard for Ive these past few years since the death of Steve Jobs. When you've worked with a man of his stature for so long, the absence must be particularly hard to bear; almost like losing a brother, I should think.

He has the illness you get from Mcdonald's....it's called getting fatter.

Its the most logic decision from Apple part. I have been wondering lately how is Ive doing in enchage of such massive part of the business across multiple platforms and areas. He is probably geting 100 new unreaded email by the time he goes to the toilet and gets back to his desk. Its to much for a single person.

Hah, I was editing my post but it did not save unfortunately. In general I was supporting your view and would prefer not be cast in the same corner as the random hate generators.

IMHO there doesn't need to be an alternative drive behind this "promotion" of Ive other than that design is becoming ever more important within Apple and that the responsibility for design has become so broad that it makes sense to distribute operational responsibility over a number of shoulders.

Of course it could mean that either of the two new guys is a future successor and that the structure is now in place for them to be groomed, but that could be years away.

Not everything is a conspiracy as so many here always assume. Just like the logo of the big events in hindsight doesn't correlate to a fraction of the suspicions that people had before the event.

Sorry... "Here's another one" was actually point you to the B4U post below. Just another pointless post.

Jobs didn't handle the operational or managerial functions of the company. He handled overall product vision, aesthetics, etc. Tim Cook handled all the unsexy stuff--and he was the best person in the world to do it.

Interesting. I was always wondering what exactly Steve's role was behind the scene. Do you have any articles or links?

Well, you could read the biography that came out. Steve was all over the place and what Mak47 says is not completely correct. He tried to be involved with any process that he thought needed his vision. This included the layout and color of production equipment, software processes, hardware aesthetics, layout of the Apple campus, packaging, remuneration of managers, negotiation with suppliers etc. So it did involve operational and managerial aspects.

Tim is and was the supply chain guru and most likely this is one of the areas where Steve stayed more or less clear because it is an extremely complicated process that cannot be understood by just glancing at it for a few minutes.

Finally Tim fired Jony for wasting 2 years skinning iOS and OSX, introducing bugs and stalling new useful features.

iOS is now the slowest iOS yet, and OSX Vista is like 2005 all over again.

It get worst before it gets better, hold on tight for WWDC in a few weeks.

Hate and bullying never works Jony, never.

So Cook fired Ive by giving him a promotion and promoting the guy heavily involved with the UI design of iOS 7/8, Yosemite and Apple Watch. That sure is a weird way to show displeasure.

Seriously some of the "takes" people have on this are quite amusing.
