Clearly this M isn't intended to be used for any serious photography. They have turned it into a Fisher Price toy.

Would have been nice if they attempted to create a functional and beautiful M.

I didn't know Fisher Price toys were made out of brushed aluminum and sold for big bucks. :D

Sorry Jony, but I like the Hermes edition even more.

Don't get me wrong, it looks great as a piece of design (albeit just rehashed from previous Apple products). But as an M user, thinking for a moment about using this as a photographic tool makes me cringe.

The Fisher Price toy comment was in a relative sense (when compared to the real M Typ 240).

Next project... the LEGO® camera, designed by Jony Ive. All the bricks are smooth-topped. No interlocking anymore! No broken fingernails trying to pry the bricks apart! Available in Space Gray, Silver, and "Gold".

I look at it as a one off design that will never be mass produced and will probably be bought by some rich friend to set on a shelf somewhere. And honestly I care more about what he's working on for Apple so I hope he didn't spend a lot of time on this side project. Though I imagine most of the work was probably done by Leica engineers.

Except this is a Leica, considered by many to be the best maker of cameras in the world. This camera sells for $7000 ....this is a one of a kind collectors piece, jointly designed by the most famous technology designer in the world and its for charity ..... And you say sell it for $1000

>.>

because its for charity.
i understand the value of the leica brand. but thats what they're be 'giving' in my scenario. people will buy the leica name like hotcakes for $1000.

Just to note, the US$7,000 for the Leica M (240) is for the body only. An APO-Leica 50mm Summicron ASPH, the lens on this camera, typically goes for another US$7,350.

a SERIOUSLY BAD camera design

Looks good MR Ive. Flat and neat.

Maybe so but it is a SERIOUSLY BAD camera design. Likely the designer id not a photographer.

What he did was remove the physical dials off the top plate. This means you have to take your eye off the subject and look at the LCD monitor to use the camera.

He also removed the flash shoe so the camera can not be used with any kind of lighting equipment.

Maybe Ive only uses his cell phone camera and did not notice any problems but the guys at Lieca would have seem what was missing too.

You don't know leica cameras do you?

The normal retail price for production versions of this camera is $7,000. Of course it would sell fast for $1K. These are hand made in Germany and come with a 36x24mm sensor and Leica optics. It is arguable one of the best cameras made.

For $1K, yes they woud sell fest, But so would new BMWs if offered for $12K. Or maybe a new Mac Pro for $100.

I believe that you open the bottom plate to access the flash card slot and possibly the batteries. This is a carryover from the film version. Lots of folks hated that Leica maintained this inconvenient tradition, but again, Leica doesn't move fast.

Actually, I was thinking of "flash" as in a lighting attachment. The old Leica's had one on the top, but the top of Ive's model seems completely smooth.

It will most likely be sold to a Leica collector for an obscene amount of money and appreciate as it is a one off from a significant designer/company.

As a collectible it is very cool looking and definitely captures a future-retro vibe. I wouldn't use if for actual photography though even if mass produced (recessed dials, recessed shutter button, no connector for cable release/soft release, loud appearance...)

Congratulations to whoever buys it. It will surely be a conversation topic. Would love to see it in real life on display.

My apologies...but now that it has been brought up, the apparent lack of the hot shoe also precludes use of an auxiliary viewfinder. Although in fairness, this camera was likely designed to just sit on shelf next to other Leica collectables.

85 days!? I guess most of that was actually making components and stuff, because the design looks like something that an Apple parody website would put together in a weekend. 5 years ago.

yes i do know what a leica camera is lol. i have a hasselblad..... (albeit 10 years old)
im not a photographer by trade but my digital rig:

5d mk2
lenses:
35mm f.14L
50mmf1.4L
85mm f1.2l
16-35 f2.8L (older mark 1)

yes i do know what a leica is. so you dont have to flaunt brands at me, I understand
and im saying they should make a limited 'dirt-cheap' version just for charity. that's the 'giving' bit.
sell it for 6 months. make a boatload of those. make it like its a 'baby' leica..
sort of how Martin makes the LX1 guitar for $299, when their HD28V retails for like $3.5k..
Or how Grado sold the HF1 to just head-fi members for a lot cheaper than their regular line.
or how BMW makes the little electric car for kids, for $1,000....

1, it exposes more of the market to the leica brand. 2, it will sell like hotcakes, people will buy the thing just for the name. Good for the cause.

the design is not necessarily 'retro' any more than blue jeans are (which certainly predate Leica's first prototype).

Blue jeans are so pre-2010. I've moved on to gray jeans - they look much better.
