My theory is he and Jobs kept each other in check. Without that leash, I feel he faces no opposition in his designs, and that's led to some of the laughable issues you are seeing in Apple's newest products.

I can see that happening! It reminds me of when cars are designed. First there's a concept car, but it is completely unrealistic. It lacks government safety requirements or any of the regulatory stuff. Then the production model is down to earth. It seems that they are letting Ive put out the concept versions of the products! Like a MBP with no ports. While the design is nice, it provides no functionality.

A pity he's NOT on the way out. They need to get past their obsession that thin is the only thing that matters.

I agree. It worked back in 2007-2014. Now it's as thin as it should get. Now they need to focus on something else

Bye bye, go work in fashion...they love less ports and thin thin ... stop ruining our products! Time for fresh ideas that blend consumer and pro needs with the future.. not just Ives ego and the future

I'm waiting for the 2nd coming of Scott Forstall.

It must be hard for Ive to stay motivated.
I know a lot of designers and they like being different.
When your design reaches a point where it is in the hands of hundreds of millions of people, then it hardly would feel like you are staying true to your design ethos.
Ie you are a sell out and creating the norm.

Apple used to be the under dog, now just the dog.

1 thing is for sure, iPhones will only be evolutionary. The revolution happened in 2007.

can you all (not just you mr.Mac.. at least 10 others in this thread alone) please quit butchering this phrase.

or, better yet, show an example what you're apparently wishing for.. that being 'Function over Form'.
let's see an example of that, ok?
thnks

Let's do one from Jony Ive himself - in the film Objectified... The indicator light (it's on Youtube)

Or Magsafe...

Can you imagine a product being developed NOT from Ive ?

Apple used to get their stuff through Frog Design, that wasn't Jony Ive...

So: the Machintosh?

Ive didn't design the Emojis.

I think he's referring to this: https://www.engadget.com/2016/11/21/apples-jony-ive-helped-design-a-christmas-tree-with-no-lights/

'Twill be a sad day when Ive does leave.

No it won't!

Ive has long lost the plot, thin thin and thinner is his only motto.

Forgetting completly that Apple devices are our daily tools, whih need to be usefull and practical.

Therice of Apple products is extremely high, while the products are fragile (who hasn't broken an iphone and iPad screens, scratched their Macbook pro etc..), often not usefull (requiring endless dongles) or a $3000+ laptop that cannot be locked down?????? And we can go on and on with bad design examples from sir Ive

I will be happy the day Ive leaves Apple.
All the respect to the man, but sadly the past years he has become a museums designer instead of an industrial designer.

He has officially said in recent interviews that they tried different materials, but nothing has been better than aluminium. So does that basically translate to; "its gonna look the same for ever now".

In hindsight when Steve passed he should of went another direction and tried something new, i think he could of done a Tesla or a nest.

Apple designs are as good as ever, but if Tim is over his head telling him to cancel all the ports and adds 56 new emojis every week, its not his problem.

So they pretty much confirmed Jony is on his way out. Good.
Did they? Where? please quote.

-

I do not question Jony´s design skills. But I doubt Apples willingness to change. Ive made something brand new almost every year before. But then they had incredible success in the Macbook and iPhone and since then has sticked to the same formula for both. I feel the company is hindering his creativity with a concervative mind set.

We´ve heard about so many exciting aquisitions Apple has made in both hardware and software. But we´re not seing any of it in the products.

Where is the Macbook that you can navigate on the screen by hovering your hand in the air with? Not touching anything? Where is the carbon fiber iPhone, bendable screens, and everything?

I feel Jony could have easily done a 2-in-1 computer that looks better and works better than Microsoft Surface Book. But I feel he is being prevented to do those things.

Wasn´t Apple more oportunistic before? When they went from a computer company to suddenly make an Mp3 player? Demand for a smart band is there. Instead they are limiting themselves to the premium Apple Watch. TodayJobs and Ive would have made a smart band that was totally hot, alot more affordable today, with all the sensors you can imagine.

Most of Apple head need to go (Tim Cook, Eddy Cue ... maybe Jony). Fresh blood is needed, that is.
Be careful what you ask for, a new management team could sink Apple.

Their staff of 60,000 is only working on emojis?

Faster or slower than the current one?

Feels like it...
MacBook Escape
MacBook Emoji

They spend the most part of their touchbar feature presentation focusing on emoji's - who the hell does that for a machine carrying a "pro" moniker?

YES.

are you saying those are examples of 'function over form'? ie- it doesn't matter how it looks as long as it works?

to me, those are horrible examples of you to give.

---
and hey, again, people keep complaining about apple being all about 'form over function'.. if they had any thought about what they were saying instead of just repeating some butchered phrase that they heard someone else say around here then they'd surely have examples of designs to give that are not form over function and are instead, function over form.

here are examples of 'function over form'... be careful what you wish for.
