Chin and forehead are bezels. This isn't my definition or yours, a bezel is in every direction not just the sides.

This is a bezel, getting rid of the sides is not bezel-less.

Technically, yes you are correct. But when it comes to "smartphones", the inference is usually the side bezels when the word bezels is used. But wont quibble about this, you are correct.

Do YOUR musing come from your backside? Or just everyone else's? You might sell this as 'removing features we didn't need from our backsides'.

This article is marketing fire fighting - it's defensive and seems a strange expense to afford a product that requires no assistance in 'selling itself' - this article excuses why it might not be 'everything' people want. It's a curious thing.

Yeah except the article explicitly states this will be a record setting revenue quarter for Apple. So claiming all this is due to low sales is dumb, inaccurate and unsupported.

Their rationale is hinged on one big piece of flawed logic; they're suggesting there would never an acceptable time to stop polishing the rock.

I've said it many times; Apple's way of giving more each year by giving less each year is going to ruin them more than they already have ruined the iOS/iPhone/mac OS experience.

You watched the Lost Interview recently, didn't you :p I agree, if you keep polishing the rock eventually it'll wear down to a pebble and finally a grain of sand...

Unless my definition of bezels is different than yours, I see no bezels on this Samsung. This is an edge to edge display and a chin and forehead yes but not side bezels.

Your definition is certainly different from the dictionary.

I find him abrasive his loopy explanations irritating.

Apple cant be crushing like the past. Those lines I used to see? Not a wait. Of all the people I know, only one ordered and X. I havent ordered one, and have a very bad taste in my mouth about a phone that worked excellent now is unusable nearly from iOS update. Im down for apple but they are losing me.

I really don't have to do either, lol. Believe it or not I'm very open minded about how things can be done, I really don't waste a lot of time complaining about things either. I certainly wouldn't go to a forum that discusses a product I don't like and spend all day trying to tell people they're stupid or fanboys or whatever, like some people here. That's a sad, sad existence.

Not sure how all that is exactly relevant to my question, I was just confused by the reply of:

"hell, Apple was one of the first companies to move to widgets...it's something I'd have expected them to do."

Ruined to the tune of a valuation of a trillion dollars.

According to gsmarena IPhone x has a 82,9% screen-to-body ratio. Both the Samsung s8 and S8+ has a better screen-to-body ratio of 83,6% and 84%. Minor differences, but the IPhone X is neither the first or the most bezzelless phone out on the market.

About the price...
It’s expensive I agree, and I also think it’s an incremental upgrade in terms of what you can do on it rather than it being some game changer. Which is fine.

What I don’t think people are realising is that Apple are a taking away spend that would have been given to other companies for devices that Apple are replacing with their all in one product. Think of how many devices 10 years ago that you would have bought to do what the iPhone does for you?

Point an shoot camera at decent quality = £250
Decent Walkman or CD player = £150
Mini computer for emails/browsing/paying bills etc.. £350
Games machine, pager, video camera etc..

If you think about it from an economics point of view, salaries have remained linear or grown with inflation over the last 10 yrs, yet the amount of products one would normally buy has decreased to just the smart phone.

So rather than phones getting more expensive in real terms they are just taking the dollars you would normally spend on other hardware. And they are doing that at a fraction of the cost of that extra hardware.

I would wager that digital lives allowed for by smart ‘phones’ (they are so much more than that) are actually way cheaper than they were 10m+ years ago. We technically have more disposable income because of Apple/google etc.. and their devices than less.

Which is why I feel that Apple, Samsung etc.. do not fear increasing these prices. Especially as so many people get them tied to a contract it’s even more affordable than ever.

I keep seeing people responding saying that Apple is just trying to get more money out of their customers.

Are there really that many people out there that don't understand the fundamentals of capitalism?

Not to mention, if it bothers you that much, quit buying Apples products.

No, I haven't but now I want to. :) I'm just responding to continued irritation from Jony's minimalized iOS & OS & hardware starting in 2013 that to me has lessened the user experience tremendously since iOS6 & Mavericks.

Jony & Dan must have skipped the day that Diminishing Returns was covered in their college economics course. I'd much rather they focus on iPhone design flaws like durability & repair/expandability than finding the next new thing to remove.

It wouldn't bother us if they offered more designs/alternatives. If Jony & Dan & Tim ran Honda, there'd only be NSX's & F1 cars in the showrooms.

Give it time, my friend, give it time. Apple didn't rise overnight.

Lol, the "fundamentals" of capitalism, as in war raised economies? seems legit.

Features like ungrouped notifications by app, top left auto arranged icons and other top of screen pull downs when phones are now clearly larger than the original iphone and doing these things one handed is clearly awkward? Put your money where your mouth is Mr. Ive and get rid of these archaic features. Before I get flamed on having reachability to solve these issues its an unnecessary extra step and feature if the UI was designed better.

I still can’t wrap my head around how the notch is a wise design choice.

Which is why you're not on Apple's design team.

I know I know, you get used to it after a couple days. Doesn’t change the fact it’s ugly as hell. Adding a small bezel along the top that’s half the height of current notch to house the new tech would’ve been better.

I disagree, it would make the screen feel smaller overall. Other phones are already doing this and I prefer Apple's implementation. You're also assuming the Kinect sensor tech would fit in half the height of the notch.

Also, I can only imagine the amount of seething remarks people on this site would make if the new Google pixel had a notch on their screen. They’d be in full force mocking it. But since it’s Apple, they can do no wrong.

If anything, Google gets more passes than Apple. Other than the camera, the Pixel hardware is sub par. Google is essentially charging a premium for stock Android. The Pixel doesn't come with headphones either.

Apple is under constant scrutiny 24/7. It doesn't matter what they do. Even positive things, people will find something to complain about.
