This is totally wrong. Customers want an end goal but they don't really know the best way to get to it. They always think they do, but you have to show them otherwise. And when you do, you succeed far further.
So why HDDs instead of SSD. What about usb-c on the phone. Why so long to get wireless charging, waterproof, list goes on....

So why do Apple hold on to the iPad Mini 4 instead of releasing an iPad Mini Pro?

Why hold onto the widely panned Mac Tube Pro instead of introducing something new and better?

I call BS, Ive!
iPad mini 4 in the lineup is probably to get rid of the rest of the stock. Someone who has a Plus or X probably wouldn’t want the mini. Perhaps I’d they have an SE the size would be much better for reading and a casual game. If you refresh the mini and put current hardware in it, the price point goes up and people won’t buy it. It’s the single reason the iPad 2017 is selling like hot cakes. Stuff in an older but “newer” processor and bam!

It's interesting because last year people were saying the same thing about the 7 selling poorly on these boards.
All I know for sure, they sold one less iPhone 7 or its progeny than they would have if they'd retained the sound jack. I'm guessing they lost a few others like me, but like a lot of other former iPhone buyers, we didn't seem to matter. Have you EVER heard of anyone who bought an iPhone 7 BECAUSE it didn't have that old pesky headphone jack? How many people bought the new MBP's BECAUSE they were sick of magsafe, SD card readers, and USB ports? I'm sure some of you are out there, but the question is rhetorical. There are definitely a LOT of former iPhone/MBP users who have moved on, or are on the threshold of doing so.

Who told you there were "waning" sales? Why did you believe them?

No one did, he’s what one would call an “idiot”.

I feel that for many of us, what we have with the iPhone 7 or 8 is all we want from a device.
There are features in the iPhone X that I will never use. My fear is that list will grow ever longer and that alone will make people like me think longer and harder about parting with money for a device that we may well only use a small part of.

Sounds like something I’d say before I got to experience the X for two weeks. I can’t see myself going back now.

It's always good to have opinions on life matters. Even if you alienate your thoughts with your words like Jony Ive do.

"I don't like the notch so 99% of iPhone X owners agree with me on this."

Oh the sheer stupidity of such assumption. I own the iPhone X and I don't notice the notch at all.

While I totally agree that his assumption is based on personal bias (which you call sheer stupiditet). I find it quite funny that when you call him out it, your counter-argument is then based on your personal bias (which again should fall under your own definition of sheer stupidity).

Personaly I don’t mind the notch. I don’t find it brilliant design, and I especially don’t think software/design is optimised properly as there seems to be a lot of wasted space IMO.

Interesting observation, and I generally agree. Computers certainly reached a point of ubiquity and performance so that you could do 80% at any price point and nearly 100% at the top end. Once reaching that, does a faster processor make a difference? Sure... but is it worth replacing every year or two? How about better graphics? How about faster I/O? Better photos?

Smart Phones are quickly reaching (or have already reached) that level for the majority of users. Yes, newer = better, but unless your old one dies do you really need to pony up for a new device every year? Probably not. So, how do the market leaders maintain high volume and high priced sales? That is indeed the big question.

I don’t necessarily disagree with the sentiment. But I guess herein lies the opinion. I still do not feel I am better of with a dongle for a headphone jack.

so what's a better way for a headphone jack, when it's on majority of audio devices? a bulkier lightning port with a dongle?

Joni Ive made a good statement, but Apple only follows that statement when it gets more customers (means more profit for stock investors). Face ID is getting more customers, but using SDD instead of HDD is not getting more customers. The water resistance versus water proof is not likely gonna get more customers.

Unfortunately, under the rule of Timmy, it's about appeasing stock investors, at the expense of customers. Steve Jobs appeased the customers, but had the amazing side effect of making a ton of money and appeasing the stock investors. Apple is doing amazing, but my guess is if Steve Jobs were alive, Apple would be doing a lot better.

Interesting... Sir Ive's definition of "better" stopped matching my definition of "better" at about the same time Steve Jobs got sick. Coincidence??

But if you substitute... "thinner" for "better" ( and "courage" ) IveCook Apple emerges.

Apple PR machine out in full force today. Wonder if the waning sales of the iPhone X are a cause.
I wouldn't necessarily say sales are waning, but it appears that the "fear" generated by some (perhaps even Apple indirectly) that it would be near impossible to get your hands on an iPhone X until sometime in 2018 has vanished. The reality of the high price is rearing its head as hardcore iPhone fan demand is being met and those who are a little more price sensitive come more into focus. Apple is also aggressively increasing supply to entice those who are price sensitive, but may be willing to spend that amount of money if the product is readily available, especially before the holidays when even the price-sensitive are a little more generous with themselves and those they love.

According to gsmarena IPhone x has a 82,9% screen-to-body ratio. Both the Samsung s8 and S8+ has a better screen-to-body ratio of 83,6% and 84%. Minor differences, but the IPhone X is neither the first or the most bezzelless phone out on the market.

https://www.gsmarena.com/apple_iphone_x-8858.php

and an aspect on why I didn't get one, the usable screen area on the X is less than the usable on my current 7+.
That was a side by side in an Apple store.

He couldn't have said it any better. They know that NFC is a future of payments and more other benefits but they held that thing for a long time. They know that wireless charging is the best feature a smartphone can ever had but they held on this for a long time. They know that OLED screen is the future of display and they held that for a long time. So what Jony is saying if ever Apple fails which maybe in the soon future these was all the reason and more.

See that’s the thing. You always had that option. iPhones have had Bluetooth since god knows how long. You were never required to be wired if you didn’t want to be.

On a similar note I appreciate wireless charging. Glad they kept thebwired charging as an option though. ;)
That's the real rub, isn't it. Wireless / bluetooth lovers were never inconvenienced by wired hubs or ports. Bluetooth was there along with wired options. In the name of shaving off a few millimeters of "thickness", wired device users were left in the lurch and asked to "be courageous". Both iPhone and MBP users of wired devices were deserted by Apple and told to be brave. So, the wireless crowd continues to buy iPhones and/or MBP's, while the wired device users have either jumped ship (wise choice), or have decided to be courageous and continue to spend more money for less return on Apple. Apple may be doing well financially with their current clientele, but that clientele has changed. They decided upon a lateral shift toward form over function, when really, that didn't have to be an either/or choice.

Well to be fair the design didn’t change from the 6 to 8, and people are up in smoke screaming. They changed the design for the X and people are still screaming. No one is ever happy.
Kind of.

40 or 50 complainers on a forum really, really, really hate the notch.

15 million users are ok with it and bought the X (so far; estimates are somewhere around 80 million for the X’s first year).

Let’s just put a pin in this and revisit it in 3 months when Apple have their biggest iPhone quarter ever. Just like all the naysayers before you you can eat crow.

Let's revisit in 6-9 months. Next quarter will be big. Too much stoking of the 8 and X for it to be otherwise. Bigger question will be sustainability. Then add in any issues that arise over time.

Asking Ive about any Apple product is only going to get you gushing babblespeak. It's absolutely pointless interviewing him. He's a good designer, but so deeply entrenched, that nothing he says about Apple products carries any weight. Might as well just watch one of their TV ads.
