thinking nothing "really good" can ever come from Apple again until every current designer has left the company.

But now I can point the finger back and Ive and unload my frustration at him - so thank you for this article!
You do know that the last Mac not designed by Ive or under his leadership was like a mid 90s performa or something right?

If he were then how did we end up with the chin and the bezels?
That's a result of the stupid "thinnest" computer EVAR trend which has Ive's handwritung all over it:

1) The chassis had to be sooo thin that the logic board would have taken up too much z space behind the display

2) Structural integrity is hindered by the thinness of a device. Larger bezels help here.

Despite leaving the company in 2019, Apple's former chief design officer, Jony Ive, helped design the new 24-inch iMac, according to an excerpt from Wired's review of the new desktop computer.

Jony Ive famously left Apple in 2019 to form his own independent design company, which would have Apple as one of its clients. During his tenure at Apple, Ive oversaw the development and design of revolutionary products, including the iPhone, iPad, iPod, MacBook, and the iMac.

Apple confirmed to Wired that Ive did indeed work on the new iMac but stopped short of confirming or denying whether his own firm, LoveFrom, aided Apple in designing the computer after he left the company.
The 24-inch iMac is the first redesign to the iMac in years, featuring a significantly thinner design, the M1 Apple silicon chip, and comes in seven vibrant colors. Learn more about the 24-inch iMac using our guide.

The big concern when he left Apple, and especially after the death of Steve Jobs, was that it would leave a void in the creative design and vision for future products. If they tapped his firm after he left to help out here, it would confirm those concerns, namely that they had to get input from outside of Apple, and that is likely not the message they want to send.

It doesn't matter who designed it, they sacrificed innovative design for thinness. Its not that much different from previous incarnations, excluding the colours.

And now has a horrible tri-colour design, and hideous chin.

I was expecting an Ipad pro style design. Large, edge to edge display and the thickness doesn't matter, we don't use imacs from the side.

Yes and I don't consider any current Mac to be "really good" (maybe M1 Mac mini) when thinking about the possibilities that were left unused on the table by stupid design choices.

I’m okay with the chin and white bezels, but that headphone jack is akin to the first gen Apple Pencil charging solution where the pencil sticks right out of the iPad.
It means you’ll always need room to the side of the iMac, and the cable has to stretch further to you. Why wouldn’t they just move it to the underside/bottom of the chin instead?
Also, Apple mouse charging solution.

Good to hear he still got it.

Where was this love for Macs in the 2010s?

So when was the last truly good Mac design, in your eyes?
There is no such a thing as a perfect device but the one that wasn't at least stupid was the last-last-gen Intel Mac Pro around the years of its release.

Everything else has significant compromises (case layout and used technology-wise) that could have been corrected when thinking a bit more about consequences (or "really caring").

So... designed while Ive was there and almost certainly had a lot influence on it.

I don’t expect people to all like all designs that would be bizarre.

I just don’t understand this weird hate for Ive/ “glad he’s gone” stuff while also (not just you specifically) claiming past Macs - also designed by Ive - were so much better, without any acknowledgement that he was in charge/involved for those too.

(shouting, in gravelly voice)
"Just when I thought he was out, they put him back in!"

You can like and criticize something to hope to make it better at the same time - are you all bipolar borderliners?

I criticize Ive so much since it's clear that he values design over physics - which is a disqualifying no-no for me. If Ive is behind these confirmed UFOs that zoom around at 13,000 MPH and stop within a split-second without destroying themselves then I'll eat my criticism and welcome his vision for the future.

well considering that most people already hated this design, there's no difference
"most people" and "most people in my echo chamber" is not at all the same thing, and we'll see very shortly with iMac sales figures. A small number of people are very vocally losing their water over the chin. Judging from the response of the people in my office, who have met every new iMac for the last 15 years with a yawn and were suddenly now talking about which color they are going to buy, *most* people don't actually care much about that chin. From my own standpoint as a thoroughgoing laptop user, I'm tempted to buy my first iMac in a long long time. Not being inside your whiny echo chamber is actually pretty nice.

The problem I have is not that you’re criticising a design.

It’s the lazy assumption that any design people don’t like is the fault of Ive but the ones people do like is the work of magical design pixies who we never hear about.

Ahhh right! so that's the reason for the Disgusting Single Fan on the Base Model... Johnny must have wanted it.
It's got 1 more fan than M1 MacBook Air which frankly didn't need it. Disgusting indeed. Some people lose their water regardless of whether it's warranted or not. The iMac won't actually *need* that second fan. You just feel a need to check that box. Anybody planning to use the iMac so hard it needed 2 fans weren't getting the lowest-end iMac anyway. Speaking as someone with an M1 MBA noodling around in Blender... it really doesn't seem to need that fan.

If you order an iMac today, it’s a month-long wait to get a base model. Some configurations are delayed until late July. For a computer that is “fugly” with a power brick that screams people’s names, it seems to be selling rather well. It looks like Apple has a much better grasp of most people’s tastes than the MR Apple-haters crowd.

What does that say about the design team at apple if Ive had been consulted to help out? 🤔
