thanks for the post. i like to hear what's going on in the world.

i didn't upgrade to the iPad2 because of how limited iOS is. It seems that iOS5 doesn't address much of what I want to be changed.

How is the file sytem in WebOS? And how is printing in WebOS?

One of the things that seem to be good about iOS5 is that you can set up a airport express. That is something I need a lot because many hotels have no WiFi, only cable internet and that makes the iPad useless.

One of the things that lock me into the iOS is itunes and the easy way of syncing pitures, my iTunes library and Movies. How is WebOS doing there? If there are simple drag and drop solutions from Aperture and iTunes and a different movie store than I think about jumping ship as well.

To the OP, I'm with you. I sold my ipad 2 and bought a TP a few days ago and am very happy with that decision. I too like the form factor quite a bit. I admit I wish it had the battery life of an ipad 2, but to be honest that really will have no impact on me at all. You can still easily get a full days of hard use out of it, and I charge nightly anyway so it is a moot point. The fact I just just set this on the charging stand and not have to plug it in is a plus for the HP anyway.

The app catalog is sparse, no question. My biggest worry is the TouchPad won't catch on enough to garner dev response. I had about 160 apps on the ipad. I'll miss maybe 8 of them if I can't get them on the TP.

Overall I'm very happy with the swap. It's a shame that people are so rabid about a device that they will never consider another option. The way the TouchPad multitasks is a HUGE plus over the ipad way of doing things.

I'm not saying the TP is better than the ipad, but it's a worthy competitor.

Wow, not trying to "drive hits" I could honestly care less if anyone goes to my blog...

I really hope WebOS does well and people like yourself stay away, It's people like you that make forums like this really suck sometimes.

Why do people have to be a*sh*l*s just because someone might not share the same opinion about something as they do? Really are you that insucure with yourself that you ned to bash others to make yourself feel better?

Sad!

Oh, don't worry. I won't be anywhere near WebOS. I stick with the best of the best. And as far as the best is concerned, the iPad is leagues ahead of anyone else. Perhaps in a few years the TouchPad will catch up to iPad v1.

Enjoy your second-rate, clunky, laggy OS and your heavy, thick, unattractive poorly built device. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Hello, quick question. Can this tablet play movies that are encoded in handbrake with the apple tv preset?

Also, how is the browser in relation to the iPad? The thing I'm most looking forward to with iOS 5 is tabbed browsing, but the way the hp tablet deals with tabs looks worse than what's on the iPad before iOS 5.

Cheers

Phil

could you elaborate? i'm curious

So I bought a new HP Touchpad last Friday. I have an iPad 2 and an iPhone 4. I got the Touchpad at about 10:00am last Friday, Buy 1:00 in the afternoon I was at my local AT&T store and upgraded from my iPhone to an HP Veer. I have been using the Touchpad/Veer combo exclusivly since Friday afternoon and to be honest, I think I'm done with my iOS devices.

I have been on the Apple bandwagon since the first iPhone was released. To be honest, i'm bored of it. For the past four years nothing with the UI has changes. It's stale. It took the this long (iOS 5) to fix the notifications which were an absolute nightmare.

To tell you the truth, webOs is AMAZING! The UI is fresh, multitasking is awesome on this device.

Full flash does make a difference, I didn't realize what I was missing until I started browsing with the Touchpad.

Don't trust the reviews, the hardware is solid, the unit is fast, screen is gorgeous. The sound is amazing coming out of this thing. Yes of course there are way fewer apps for webOS at this point compared to iOS BUT with full flash in the browser (which works amazingly well) you don't need half the apps that you do on iOS.

For my daily, web browsing, email reading, etc, webOS smokes iOS. There are more Apps coming daily too.

The wat the Touchpad Integrates with the Veer is awesome.

I hear people complain about the weight compared to the iPad 2. SERIOUSLY? There is barely ANY difference when you hold them up together, anyone who is actually complaining about this is nit picking. and the thickness, COME ON, yes, the touchpad is a little thicker, but it fits really well in the hand. I think it's size is just right. I had an iPad1 and upgraded when iPAD 2 came out, and I never really loved the way the iPad 2 felt compared to the original, I think the little bit of thinkness gives you a better hold on the devics. Smaller is NOT always better.

Anyway, I'm not trolling here, I'm just trying to let people know that my feeling on the Touchpad andwebOS in general and maybe some will take a look at it and feel as I do that it just is a better fit then iOS.

Bye Bye, saw the reviews on this and would have no part of it!
but good luck to you, you'll be back!

Lol, the way you get back at him is by making fun of his operating system of choice! Am I the only one that finds this funny?

Anyway, to the op, I just got done playing with the touchpad at best buy, and I was actually kind of disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I love webos (my second phone is a pre plus) but the experience just wasn't as smooth as I would have expected from a device that powerful. It felt like the ipad2 was at 60fps and the touchpad was at like 10fps.

I hope they can fix those problems, the idea of webos seems much more powerfull and enjoyable than iOS and I want them to succeed so they get the developer support, but so far they keep messing up the exicution.

Plug usb cable into TouchPad and drag and drop files from your pc to it. It's very simple.

Get wifi media sync from the app catalog, it's simpler because you just choose a folder to sync on you desktop and drop your files there and they update on your phone through wifi.

I don't have a problem with non-Apple devices directly. The problem that I usually have with these devices is that most expect me to run a copy of windows in order for me to be able to sync music, addresses, etc. I am just not going to do that.

I run several different flavors of Mac OS and several flavors of Solaris. If these 3rd party devices can't work a deal with Apple to provide compatibility with iTunes, then they need to provide some (non-painful) way to sync music, address books, etc with their device and not require the end user to be running windows.

Personally, I am rooting for WebOS. It looks like it has the potential to actually be a worthy competitor to the iPad/iPhone. It's not there yet, but I can actually see it getting there. As popular as Android is on phones, I still do not see it as an OS for "the people". Zillions of people out there own Android gadgets and I am convinced that there is a very big part of that market that has no idea what they're using, what it does, or how to do it. It's a free or cheap phone that they got with their contract. Or they're like my uncle--he was told his Android phone was the latest and greatest, so he bought it for $199 and a new contract. He has absolutely no clue how to use it.

I believe that is the sole reason that Android is not doing well on tablets. When a carrier isn't locking you into something, you are more free to speak with your wallet. WebOS, on the other hand, could reach the masses. If it becomes the superior OS, so be it. But I believe Google needs to worry more about WebOS than Apple does if it starts drumming up developer support.

to be honest, I think I'm done with my iOS devices.

C'mon boys let's go git the pitchforks and torches!!!

Seriously though, iOS has two killer apps for me:
  • iTunes
  • App Store

Without those, no other table can compete. Yes, there are some nicer aspects to some tablets. Some are bigger or smaller or cheaper or do 2-3 things better, but overall the iPad wins. Throw in those two killer apps, and for me the iPad becomes essential.

And don't even get me started on Flash. I've hated Flash for far longer than it's been fashionable to hate it. I hated it the very first time I simply tried to see a restaurant's menu and it required some sort of thing that I had to download, install, restart my browser, reload the restaurant page, sit through the web page's loading time with progress bar, sit through a silly animation... yeah, I never ate there. And after all that to find out it's one of the biggest security holes on a computer. And it's a power and resource hog. And it brings Macs to their knees. And it seems like every two days I have to update Flash on Windows... agree to update, download, agree to the EULA, restart... ***** FLASH!!! FLASH MUST DIE!!! I don't understand why a single person on this Earth thinks it's a good thing. People who like Flash either are complete idiots who like idiotic idiocy, are hopelessly biased because they make a living from it, or are so jealous of iOS devices it's the only thing they can bring up.

I'm a new TouchPad owner but have not tried to do this yet........do you know if this process works if your pc is acually a Mac?

I'm sorry. I've never owned a Mac before. I have no idea how this works.

You didn't get many hugs as a kid, did you?

Hello, quick question. Can this tablet play movies that are encoded in handbrake with the apple tv preset?

My guess is yes. I'm able to play movies coverted for ipad use.

Sure! Imagine you have a stack of 3x5 cards on your desk. Each card represents an app, or email, or the internet browser. You can have many cards (seen videos of 32) open at any one time as you like. You can swap between them at will and each card remains active the entire time. No need to close down an app to get email anymore, just swipe up to put the current app in card view, and swipe left or right to get the new card you want and maximize it. WebOS is brilliant with this. Lots of videos online that show this in action.

100% agree the demo unit experience isn't great. I've played with 2 of these at home without the demo software and that is definately not the case. There is an occasional lag here and there, but overall it's butter smooth. HP screwed up putting that crap on the demo units.

Fantastic! Thank you for that.

I certainly agree, webOS is quite nice.

I just picked up the same model you have, over the weekend. In my case I did not buy it to replace my iPad but rather as another nice choice to have in the house and to share with other family members.

We now have a couple of iPads (1 & 2) as well as a new Galaxy Tab which is quite fantastic in it's own right, as well as the new HP.

Frankly the very best aspect of both the Android and webOS tablets is their ability to run flash, fast, cool and totally trouble free just like using a PC laptop such as one of my various ThinkPads.

There is simply no substitute for providing full web access.

If the iPad was not so limited in terms of web sites that you cannot view due to the lack of Flash. I would not have gone to the others. I prefer Apple industrial design and the little refinements that Apple typically offers.

But to ignore flash was a complete and serious mistake on Apples part.

However sales numbers have proven that most people don't know enough about what they use to miss it, and they have no clue they cannot access any site they wish.

That limitation, has been cleverly overcome by Apples ever successful marketing machine.

Yet for those of us with skill, knowledge and full awareness. Flash is a great tool.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about Flash. I simply cannot understand why Android users brag about having Flash. To me, that's like bragging about having Herpes or HIV. Why would you openly tell people that you have the crappiest, slowest, most ancient web "technology" on your mobile device?

Flash runs like crap on laptops and desktops. I know what you mean where you just want to see a ****ing restaurant menu and some self-indulgent moronic web-designer insists that you load up flash to scroll around on their poorly designed menu. I ****ing hate it. Oh my god I hate it!

I simply don't get the love for Flash. It's such a ****** technology.

However sales numbers have proven that most people don't know enough about what they use to miss it, and they have no clue they cannot access any site they wish.

Complete drivel. I can just as easily speculate that "given the sales numbers people have clearly shown they don't care to have Flash on their mobile device."

OP, you do not have to justify anything. If you prefer the HP product, good for you.

You will not find many sympathetic people here.

well i guess farewell is in order then...
that is one nice thing about living in a free market society, you get to pick and choose as you wish
have fun with your new toys and perchance drop in once or so to let us know what your experiences are (good or bad)

i jumped ship once, the water was cold and full of sharks :D

I was never looking to "justify" anything and GOD knows i'm not looking for any sort of sympathy. Since when is it taboo to come to a bord I have been a member of for YEARS and not be able to give an opinion on a new product that is out?

As I said, I have been a member of this board since 2007. It is sad how things have changed and how rude people are around here. Closed minded people...

It's just sad that any little thing that goes against Apple or anything that might show some promise or inginuity is bashed because it didn't come from Apple.

Thats alright I'm sure apple has their engineers hard at work right not tearing down a Touchpad and ripping into WebOS so they can take whats good about it and incorporate it into iOS 6...

I'm still debating whether to pick one up or no.

I played with one in BestBuy for a while; I loved the OS - it was awesome.

The hardware - not as bad as the reviews make it out to be, but definitely noticeably thicker and heavier, and hence not easy to hold in one hand.

Compared to iOS, there was lag and delay. I was (still am?) seriously considering buying one, but worry that it will become a discarded toy in 1 month's time

Yup, the OS is extremely laggy. It will become a discarded toy. Just go spend an hour at BestBuy and it will play itself out.
