ActionableMango, does your rant about your HP laptop have anything to do with the HP Tablet at all?

Same company building it, probably even the same division, maybe even the same individuals. In fact, a laptop is a well-established item. I shudder to think what they do with their first try on a 1st gen product like a tablet.

Like I said, I wouldn't rule out HP printers because HP actually builds some decent printers. I assume that's a different division entirely.

Seriously, if it broke after 4 days why did you keep it?

I kept the laptop because the ability to change bass/treble directly on the keyboard is completely unimportant and because HP Customer Support assured me it was a common problem that would be fixed with a driver update (it was never fixed with a driver update).

I've had an iPad 1 since launch day in 2010 and use it as my primary computer. I haverarely not been able to view video or other content because of lack of Flash.

I could care less.

Blah blah blah about all of your devices being superior to iOS devices. You and the rest of the relatively small user base of these other tablets can have a blast on them while the vast majority of folks will be enjoying their iPads.

Lets see, the FAA approved iPads for cockpit use, the military uses iPad (as do some foreign militaries), the iPad has been an unexpected hit in enterprise etc.

BTW, I doubt you have ever owned an Apple product.

Tend to agree with the above poster. I had flash on my Xoom and Transformer, and it's overrated and a bit of a battery hog. So many sites are optimized for the iPad nowadays, you can see most videos right in mobile safari. Good luck to the OP with the Touchpad, though I am happy that you're enjoying it, several of your posts firing back at people in this thread make you look just as immature as they do. I too am not crazy about HP computers, but hopefully the Touchpad is a sign of good changes coming for them. I think it's the last ditch for WebOS to catch on, and more competition is never a bad thing. (Look at how Android inspired parts of iOS5.)

I completely agree with you on hp laptops, they are crap. What's even worse is that by making these cheap computers they became the #1 computer maker, so all the other pc companies followed suit. The only ones left making good computers are Sony and apple. For this it's really hard for me to support hp products, they ruined the pc.

That being said, the touchpad and webos phones are being designed by palm, which has made good designs in the past, but they haven't been well exicuted, just at the Oreo effect on the original pre. They say it's because they didn't have the resources, they do now so we shall see.

The OS is not laggy at all. The demo units do not reflect reality whatsoever. And the battery life is just as good as my wife's iPad. Meaning 7 to 9 hours of real world use.

I'm still trying to figure out what all these Flash websites are that I can't visit. Maybe I'm just weird, but I haven't run into them. A couple years ago, it was just porn and pizza sites. Now they have HTML5 versions of everything, so I haven't really come across anything I've needed Flash for in the last year or so. None of my apps replace Flash websites. So I guess you're right — no, I don't know what I'm missing.

Sure! Imagine you have a stack of 3x5 cards on your desk. Each card represents an app, or email, or the internet browser. You can have many cards (seen videos of 32) open at any one time as you like. You can swap between them at will and each card remains active the entire time. No need to close down an app to get email anymore, just swipe up to put the current app in card view, and swipe left or right to get the new card you want and maximize it. WebOS is brilliant with this. Lots of videos online that show this in action.

Am I the only person in the world that is satisfied with the way that iOS handles multi-tasking. There are only so many things that you can do at any one time. If you are watching a video - you can only watch one
If you are checking email - you are not doing anything else
If you are playing a game - you are not doing anything else
If you are web-browsing - you are not doing anything else.

You do not have to close down any apps on an iOS device, you merely hit the home button twice and then you can go to any other running app instantly and constantly switch between them.

Having 32 items running and draining resources and battery life all at the same time when you can only interface with 1 seems a total gimmick and completely pointless.

I am not an Apple fanboy and there are more than enough consumers for rival OS platforms to co-exist. My purchases are made from an educated standpoint and I evaluate each purchase on its relative merits. I am sure that other tablets have advantages and disadvantages over iOS, but nothing that I have seen that would make me ditch my iPad 2 yet.

As for Flash - I have also hated this ever since I first saw it and I am so glad that Apple have taken the standpoint they have. On either a PC or a Mac, Flash is a horrid experience and in the 21s century there is simply no place for such an outdated, clunky and in-efficient technology.

Before we all get carried away on this, we have to bear in mind that we are in a tiny minority of end users - we are informed and tech savvy - and the vast majority of iPad customers have no idea what Flash or Multi-tasking is. They buy the iPad because it is a beautiful, cool and desirable product that is easy to use, does all they want and more and is fantastically marketed.

This is the reason why Apple have sold 25 million units and counting.

I would suggest (I have no proof) that the TP and Android tablets are purchased by the kind of people that are like us. They are, for want of a better word, Geeks!!

This is why there is such a small number of these rival tablets being sold.

oh come on now. SoC's have become so powerful they rival netbook procs. Batteries are taking up most of the space in the tablets because they have HUGE amounts in there.. there's no reason not to support flash. Say what you will, flash is used in many many sites as the WHOLE SITE- when i visit on my ipad, i simply can't view them, this is BS.

DO NOT TELL ME its innefficient and clunky, do not tell me I shouldn't have the choice to toggle it.

DO TELL ME - Apple is doing this so they can keep their ecosystem CLOSED and MILK PROFITS AS MUCH A POSSIBLE.

Everything else is a joke and a lie. If it wasn't, Apple would allow you to toggle Flash on and off just like other platforms. If you feel its clunky and innefficient - turn it off. If you need to access a site because you only have your ipad, but you're forced to use LogMeIn to log into your PC remotely because the site wont load and you can't do what you need to - then this is limited functionality.

Apple has you believing this is for your own good while they pocket your dollars. Unless Apple gives users more choice and flexibility with these devices, long term they will flop. I'm 100% sure of this.

What's the issue. Everyone who cares, knows iOS does not support Flash, has never supported Flash and (hopefully) will never support Flash.

This is well documented. As such, there is no point purchasing an iOS device and moaning it does not have it.

If you need it, buy something else and stop moaning. If you don't need it, or don't care about it, continue to buy iOS devices and enjoy everything else they do.

So I bought a new HP Touchpad last Friday. I have an iPad 2 and an iPhone 4. I got the Touchpad at about 10:00am last Friday, Buy 1:00 in the afternoon I was at my local AT&T store and upgraded from my iPhone to an HP Veer. I have been using the Touchpad/Veer combo exclusivly since Friday afternoon and to be honest, I think I'm done with my iOS devices.

I have been on the Apple bandwagon since the first iPhone was released. To be honest, i'm bored of it. For the past four years nothing with the UI has changes. It's stale. It took the this long (iOS 5) to fix the notifications which were an absolute nightmare.

To tell you the truth, webOs is AMAZING! The UI is fresh, multitasking is awesome on this device.

Full flash does make a difference, I didn't realize what I was missing until I started browsing with the Touchpad.

Don't trust the reviews, the hardware is solid, the unit is fast, screen is gorgeous. The sound is amazing coming out of this thing. Yes of course there are way fewer apps for webOS at this point compared to iOS BUT with full flash in the browser (which works amazingly well) you don't need half the apps that you do on iOS.

For my daily, web browsing, email reading, etc, webOS smokes iOS. There are more Apps coming daily too.

The wat the Touchpad Integrates with the Veer is awesome.

I hear people complain about the weight compared to the iPad 2. SERIOUSLY? There is barely ANY difference when you hold them up together, anyone who is actually complaining about this is nit picking. and the thickness, COME ON, yes, the touchpad is a little thicker, but it fits really well in the hand. I think it's size is just right. I had an iPad1 and upgraded when iPAD 2 came out, and I never really loved the way the iPad 2 felt compared to the original, I think the little bit of thinkness gives you a better hold on the devics. Smaller is NOT always better.

Anyway, I'm not trolling here, I'm just trying to let people know that my feeling on the Touchpad andwebOS in general and maybe some will take a look at it and feel as I do that it just is a better fit then iOS.

-Gromet

I haven't had a chance to try the HP Touchpad just yet, but I plan to check it out. I've tried the Blackberry Playbook twice now, and still don't really understand a few basic things about the device. If it takes that long, then I'll stick with iOS. The one thing that is concerning about the HP Touchpad, like the other competitors, are the apps. With the current dominance of iOS, its not going to be easy to get developers to focus on WebOS, when their money pot is in the other two. The touchpad is only as good as the software available for it, so good luck with that.

i have no idea why apple forbids flash, and as a result i have to go through a clunky app to sometimes be able to see some content. your theory about pocketing my dollars by hobbling their device is passionate, but i don't really follow. how does the lack of flash support enrich apple?

i loathe flash, and generally turn it off on my computer, but a toggle would be nice. this is definitely a weakness in the iPad. there are sites i use for my work that rely on flash. i don't like it. but, it is what it is. so, the iPad will never be able to replace my computer. but, then again, i don't expect it to.

i don't think i would be willing to leave everything else that is good about ios for flash support on another device within a barren app environment. i think honeycomb is a lot less polished, but the real issue isn't with the os, but with the environment and integration. when (if?) other manufacturers can pull this off, then they might get my attention (and my money).

I totally agree. I am perfectly happy with multitasking on iOS. I think it's brilliant. I never have to close an app! And I don't have a bunch of poorly coded apps in the background draining my battery. iOS, by far, has the smartest implementation of multi-tasking. It may not "look" as cool as some stupid cards or whatever, but the functionality of it is perfect. Only allowing certain events in the background is fantastic.

Again, I agree. Flash is complete crap. In fact, it's absolutely *pathetic* that other mobile device manufacturers are embracing Flash just to have an extra "feature" in order to compete with iPad. Their products are so undesirable that they actually support these "negative features" in order to try to appeal to somebody (anybody! please!!) It's downright deplorable.

Well put that man.
The whole childish argument is starting to get on my nerves. We are all grown ups, we can all make or own sensible informed decisions about what we buy. If you are unhappy with what you bought, you should have done more research before handing your money over.
I wouldn't want people attacking me for what I buy (though I have some mates who do) , so I don't attack others.
My girlfriend has an Android, which I really like, but not enough to make me switch, but she loves it, and that's really all that matters.
How about a bit of mutual respect around here.
OP - i'm glad you like your new devices, you obviously made an informed choice of what suits you, don't let anyone tear you down for it.

In my experience so far, I have not seen it to be laggy. I cant talk about the bettery life; haven't tested that. I hope the 7 to 9 hours is true....some reviews said the batter life was 60% of iPad 2 and that would concern me.

Eh I expect fanbois to say it is complete drivel.

Thanks for ignoring ALL the free content you can access when you have Flash support.

This avoids you purchasing apps to use as vehicles for content access which is blocked by apple, avoids you using Apple's advertising system, and allows accessing free streaming content (movies / TV shows.)

Do not tell me that this is not THE factor motivating Apple to try to push a shift in the market. People will buy movies and TV shows just to see them on their little ipad screens; why would you do that when the browser supports it. When you can play flash games that get updated constantly for free - why would you spend 1$ on a game you'll play for 5 mins on the app store.

So please, if you drink the Apple Kool Aid, its drivel. If you have a Business Degree/ Common Sense, you can see this is the strategy they are using to push their platform, ie a direct attack on their biggest threat/competitor for content delivery.

The OS is Laggy also the keyboard is laggy, I owned both and both are. Laggy.Give the thrive
a try, I played for only 30 minutes but seemed nice.

Except you close the App every time you hit the home button in IOS. While the fake multitasking works most of the time, it isn't really multitasking. The only thing its doing is triggering one of a few background services apple allows, depending on the app, and saving state when you exit. Perfect - Not so much. This save state thing causes time outs, crashes, and does not allow running more than 1 app at once; you'll notice if you try to go between too many similar types of apps it'll simply delete the save state randomly of the previous app.

Works great on my SGS II with Gingerbread Android, loads in about half a second, scrolls perfectly, interacts perfectly, I would like to recommend that you get with 2011. Manufacturers are not supporting "Negative Features" - if you want to call something drivel this would be it - they're supporting... STANDARD FEATURES... To appeal to someone who, you know, whats to replace their laptop with a tablet. Which you can't do with the ipad because it straight up doesnt work with a significant amount of websites.

I know about Apple's Marketing campaign - this is PR.

Haha! Complete drivel.

Maybe. But we will just have to wait and see.

Look I have an iPad because it gives me access to apple's world; i use it for content consuming. Don't try and pretend that this thing has no significant, SIGNIFICANT limitations that stop it from being a real work device, because it does. This is why I have an Android phone. Apple should give a central file system so Apps can edit or work with the same file. Apple should also allow flash on their browsers. But they don't, and this is to maintain their DRM and to appease the Music/Movie industry who have given them exclusive contracts.

Anyway I'm not sure what we are arguing at this point - my fault as well as yours - blind leading the blind, you're clearly an Apple apologist which is fine.
I like iOS especially for games and reading books on my ipad, and the smoothness of the scrolling and interaction, but I am infuriated by Apple's limitation on functionality and tight grip on things, and I'm perplexed how they've managed to convince users its for their own good when it is clearly a business decision in line with their strategy and the rest of their behavior.
Innefficient/Buggy/Crashes is no longer an excuse. The latest SoCs running on Android is the proof of concept.

On one hand they milk their customers dry and limit significantly the features on their devices on the other hand they make their limited features work very easily and make them super accessible to people where maybe on Symbian/Android it would be more muddled or take half a brain cell to figure out. I mean how do you explain the piss poor Bluetooth support on these idevices, you can't transfer files even PICTURES to any other device. You have to download apps that allow you to transfer between idevices, where as every other bluetooth device out there has protocol for file transfer between any other device with bluetooth. Please, do not tell me this is for my own good. Please.

This is their formula. They've looked at the feature set of devices on the market and cherry picked the ones that people use the most, neutered them, made them pretty. They treat their customers like children queuing up to the ice cream truck with dollars in their hands.
