I tried jumping to Android once. It was fun customizing everything and the integration with Google apps was nice. But the whole experience is rough at the edges. There's Flash, but performance is choppy at times. There's an app market, but a huge number of apps are insanely crappy and many even cause the device to crash. There are places to buy movies and music, but nothing anywhere as easy and seamless as the iTunes store. The entire experience is workable but just nowhere near as refined. I haven't had the chance to try a touchpad but I suspect the experience is similar. It'll be tough for anyone to emulate the overall experience that Apple has created.

Apple didn't have anywhere near the competition everyone else does right now. With so many ecosystems popping up only a few will probably thrive, the others will fall to the wayside.

Yeah, and Android won't be around? I find that hard to believe since Android is so popular.

Uh, there *is* a huge mass of Apple fan boys. I'm serious. Go visit a hipster/yuppie coffee shop one of these days and look at what people are using. 90% of the machines are Macs and 90% of the people are using them exclusively for email, movies and web browsing (which you could do just as easily and cheaper with any number of brands of computer).
90% of what people use cars for can be accomplished by a used '95 Civic, people buy nicer cars anyways, time get over it and accept that some people have different tastes, preferences, and priorities than you.

But if it gives you a little ego boost to tell yourself they're just not as smart as you, or they've been cajooled by Apple's marketing voodoo, or whatever, have a ball, it's your world.

Side note: Are Hipster Coffee Shops different from Yuppie Coffee Shops, or are they the same thing? And how can I distinguish them from Plain Old Coffee Shops? Just curious.

Sounds like you are taking his post a little too personal.

How's that?

You aren't taking it too personal. I would make the same argument as you. People act like Apple users are tards for paying $100 more (or $100 less, if we look at tablets!) for a FAR SUPERIOR user experience, work flow, applications (btw did anyone see the latest survey that showed Android developers are declining?), and everything else. They act like they are completely utilitarian, where they only need the ugliest, most basic thing to accomplish the most basic tasks..... And then they drive a really expensive car or whatever. I agree with your argument: shouldn't those same people be driving a 1990 Honda Civic? It's got 4 wheels and a motor.

I've discovered a phenomenon among my middle-aged, non-hipster friends. After buying their kids MacBooks for college a number of them have been buying iMacs for the home based on the MacBook experience. People are drawn to the usability. It's not "fanboy-ism" it's frustration at years of using machines and OSes that overpromise and underdeliver. A friend who converted to Mac just this week called me a couple of weeks ago because he couldn't get an external drive to show up on his year-old Windows 7 machine. We finally gave up and he accessed it through his kid's MacBook (and it was originally formated on a different Windows machine).

Most consumers don't want to dick around with technology - they just want it to work.

If you have to ask, then you'll never get it (too old, maybe?)

Glad you found the right device for you. Have fun!

I was never looking to "justify" anything and GOD knows i'm not looking for any sort of sympathy. Since when is it taboo to come to a bord I have been a member of for YEARS and not be able to give an opinion on a new product that is out?
As I said, I have been a member of this board since 2007. It is sad how things have changed and how rude people are around here. Closed minded people...

Not trying to be an ass but the bigger question is why do you think people care what you do or what device you use?
That's the only reason I hate posts like this.... to me (like some others have said) it appears you're trying to get some back up related to your purchase.... a justification if you will. I know in this day and age it's "cool" to let every one know what you're doing and so forth but when it comes right down to it no one really gives a poo.

Enjoy your new device and I can't wait for your next post telling us all you switched to another device.... on the edge of my seat holding my breath!!

I agree with you 100% and will take it a step further.

It seems like with the advent of the internet, everybody has an incredibly inflated sense of self-importance. I mean, look at the OP's blog. No one cares about it, and yet he still wants to make posts here to drive hits to his blog. He thinks that we all care to read a long, amateur-ish review of a device we aren't interested in. In fact, it wasn't enough to either post the review on just this website, or just on his blog - he had to cross post it to both. I realize everyone has the dream of making a few bucks off of page hits, etc, but it really is just boring.

I was on FaceBook for a few days. I had them delete my account after I saw status updates like "I'm eating an orange. LOL!!!" or "About to go have lunch, ROFLMAO!" ... I don't know how we got to this point where we feel the need to update everyone on everything we do. I refuse to participate in any type of social network.

Who is stupid enough to buy HP touchpad?

Hp just shut down all of their mobile divisions and they are going to close PC as well.

This company is doomed.

I am surprised HP would dumped the Touchpad after less than 50 days.

I thought they would at least try to make it through the holiday season.

I guess in this economy big companies don't want to invest in a losing product for very long.

It's truly a sad day for the Palm community. All of us who grew up with Palm pilots in the early 2000s. Those were truly the heydays of Palm/Us Robotics.

I wonder how long Android tablet makers will continue. I see Samsung making it another round. Asus maybe. I think Acer is abandoning their tablet soon.

I think ice cream tablet integration will finally decide the tablet wars. Because only the early adopters would consider Android tablets right now. The average consumer is flocking to the iPad.

So I bought a new HP Touchpad last Friday. I have an iPad 2 and an iPhone 4. I got the Touchpad at about 10:00am last Friday, Buy 1:00 in the afternoon I was at my local AT&T store and upgraded from my iPhone to an HP Veer. I have been using the Touchpad/Veer combo exclusivly since Friday afternoon and to be honest, I think I'm done with my iOS devices.

I have been on the Apple bandwagon since the first iPhone was released. To be honest, i'm bored of it. For the past four years nothing with the UI has changes. It's stale. It took the this long (iOS 5) to fix the notifications which were an absolute nightmare.

To tell you the truth, webOs is AMAZING! The UI is fresh, multitasking is awesome on this device.

Full flash does make a difference, I didn't realize what I was missing until I started browsing with the Touchpad.

Don't trust the reviews, the hardware is solid, the unit is fast, screen is gorgeous. The sound is amazing coming out of this thing. Yes of course there are way fewer apps for webOS at this point compared to iOS BUT with full flash in the browser (which works amazingly well) you don't need half the apps that you do on iOS.

For my daily, web browsing, email reading, etc, webOS smokes iOS. There are more Apps coming daily too.

The wat the Touchpad Integrates with the Veer is awesome.

I hear people complain about the weight compared to the iPad 2. SERIOUSLY? There is barely ANY difference when you hold them up together, anyone who is actually complaining about this is nit picking. and the thickness, COME ON, yes, the touchpad is a little thicker, but it fits really well in the hand. I think it's size is just right. I had an iPad1 and upgraded when iPAD 2 came out, and I never really loved the way the iPad 2 felt compared to the original, I think the little bit of thinkness gives you a better hold on the devics. Smaller is NOT always better.

Anyway, I'm not trolling here, I'm just trying to let people know that my feeling on the Touchpad andwebOS in general and maybe some will take a look at it and feel as I do that it just is a better fit then iOS.

New is always intriguing. While I don't really care what device you use, it will be interesting to see if you still feel this way a few months from now.

I'm a bit confused though - you seem to feel that a lot of the apps on iOS exist only because Flash is not available. What kind of apps were you using? The apps I use are apps that I would use, regardless of whether or not I had Flash.

Whoops - didn't realize how old the first post was. I see you've come back to iOS. Hope you won't be too bored. ;)

hate to see more and more (or less and less) competition fall by the way-side. We can look forward to Apple never opening up their devices and OS like Android and WebOS does. I find myself growing weary of the things my iPad 2 can't do.

So what's your plan now? Trudge on? Jump again to Android? Come back to Apple?

Hah..
I had this debate a few months ago...
my 1st gen Iphone started to die, and I needed to replace it...
I had spent maybe £10 on apps, so I hadn't invested too much, so I saved £20 a month and got a Sony Xperia Arc, running Android...

I have recently got a new, better paid job, am looking to switch to an iMac.

Now I am stuck with an android phone for over 18 Months!
I can honestly say that I will stick with apple in the future as the Android OS just looks rubbish, and most apps have ads
