R.I.P. competition, silly patent laws win the day.

So lets just go out and steal IP from everyone. That would help competition…...

Give me a break.

Go ask the kid who has been fined $600 grand for music piracy about stealing IP.

This is a sad day for innovation.

Pinch to zoom? Double tap to zoom? Bounce back feature?

Might as well sue all the companies that made mouse peripherals for desktops then.

.. Who even grants these companies such patents? For example, Facebook has a "News Feed" patent and it didn't even create it!

Holy cow! All of these ideas were brand new, as of the invention of the iPhone! None of this existed before the iPhone. What's the point of inventing stuff if everybody else is allowed to rip it off? They can still use their blackberry keyboards and the little nub for navigation - they used it up until the iPhone was invented.

Here are the patents and their descriptions

It is not the feature, but how it is implemented. What this is saying is that Samsung just flat out copied, rather than designing it from scratch.

Cry moawr. Windows 8 and Palm OS showed there are other ways to make an OS and a Phone. See Nokia Lumia.

Exactly... I'm really liking how Windows is trying to make something different.

Not to rain on the parade, but as Mike Swift's twitter has pointed out, infringement is one thing. We still need to hear whether the patents are valid, and what damages are owed, if any.

At the end, it doesn't matter that much if the jury says the patents are invalid. The damage is done to samsung, so far the jury is saying: "Samsung, you copied Apple". And something tells me this is what most newspapers will tell.

I am shocked..........An American Jury finds in favour of an American Company in a trial against a foreign company in a trial held in the USA.......NEVER saw that one coming!!!!

Don't act surprised. Everyone saw this coming as they are clearly guilty. Should they have the trial in the UN?

I hope u guys know this doesn't change much. Most of those phones are no longer sold

lol @ all the people on this forum who thought they were super smart saying that Samsung didn't copy Apple. You is wronged! :p

Great day for designers. If Apple couldn't protect themselves against thief like Samsung, how could independent designer do it?

Happy :D

A jury finds against a company that blantantly copied the phone, tablet, even the power adapter, box, advertising, even actors, copied the look of the store, copied proprietary connectors. Even wrote giant documents detailing all the effort Apple put into the iPhone and what they needed to copy.

NEVER saw that one coming!!!

Maybe, just maybe, justice will be served. Samsung is a mighty sleazy company. http://www.kernelmag.com/features/report/3028/samsung-power-corruption-and-lies/

Anyway, like we've been saying all along : some claims will be won, others lost. Let's wait before calling things. Macrumors did quite jump the gun with "Jury Finds in Favor of Apple".

In fact, it's a lot of "YES/NO" for multiple devices on multiple patents.

True, but since they are finding in Apple's favor (largely) on the design patents, its tougher to argue, even if damages are minimal, that Samsung didn't copy Apple. Remember, even the "best" scenario for Apple ($2.5 billion damages) wouldn't break the bank. Apple wants a symbolic victory first and foremost. They also want the patents to be valid, to force Samsung and others to design around them.

----------

So Samsung's tablets, which haven't sold well, didn't infringe. Samsung's phones, which have sold well, did infringe, for the most part. Telling.

Left side brained people will never understand that art theft is a bad thing. :p

Jelly Bean doesn't have bounce back on my Galaxy Nexus, they changed it to an intensifying color when pulled. innovation. Possible.

In a sense this feels like a little gift to Steve on the anniversary of when he left his position.

Hopefully Samsung stops producing components for Apple products over this. Hit them where it hurts...

Several counts of willing full infringement.
Ouch.

Lol.No. It's just either way it feels like there won't be true competition. I just hate when companies can't fight things on the battlefield and have to litigate instead. I love Samsung. I love Apple. I don't want patents messing with the phones and products I love.

well that could go either way. What if Apple just got fed up with being ripped off all the time and stopped for good? The world would be back on a slow climb with innovation rather than fast.

Speaking as a painter(art). If someone kept ripping off my work I would be pissed off and stop showing it publicly. What if Apple just started designing things never to see the outside world so no one can copy? We lose out because of thieving companies :p

I'm sorry but the galaxy s 3 is as far from the iPhone than previous generations......and it is actually better than the iPhone in so many ways. Take a negative and turn it postitive
