Yup and that cycle slows innovation. Create something - wait 2 years for people to catch up, come up with something new, wait another year or two etc.

Why do you think Apple waiting a good four years from the original iPhone to release Siri? Or why their "new" phones always have features that should have been there months / years ago?

Not hating on Apple - they get away from it because they can.

Do you really think a company in a competition for product sales sits idly by waiting for their competitor to come out with their next product...so they can starting planning how they are going to defend it...and then take even longer to design and produce it. In you thought process the cycle would take just as long or longer.

AHHH MEN brother! Stupid crapdroid will never be IOS lol.....android=terrible segmentation and battery life and the manufacturers throw us alpha quality hardware like gumballs in a dollar store!

Alpha quality hardware? LOL do you know that Samsung have built almost all components in your Iphone? And probably your mac as well?

The CPU is the same in all IOS devices and all Android devices, well not android devices running on i386 tho but that are a port of android as well.

YES YES YES YES as a android owner who will be getting the iphone 5 in fall, SCAMSUNG got what they deserve

Well, no one had it before. Part of Apple's appeal is its attention to small details that no one notices before, but which appear obvious after they've done it. In the realm of user interface, "silly" things like this make a big difference.

That is quite plainly false, as Samsung demonstrated with prior art.

I'm tired of hearing the ridiculous argument that this is a win for innovation, and consumers. Are you crazy? This is a lost to consumers. Apple is not into the licencing game. They're all about keeping everything to themselves. And now the verdict says they get to own even very basic designs. Get ready for Apple's stranglehold on all IOS users to get tighter. Get ready for a more closed off environment. Get ready for the ends of days, December 21, 1012. Just kidding on that last one...but its gonna be terrible for everyone, even IOS users.

If Apple sues everyone and the courts tell them to stop selling their products, Apple will have a monopoly. Because Apple is going to use the fact that they won this case to sue other people. Eventually, Apple will be the only smartphone provider.

Uhm no, because not every smartphone needs to be a copy of the iphone...

Sadly Samsung won :-(

Like I sadly predicted, Samsung won. The amount of damages are basically chump change to Samsung at this point. No one will get fired, no phones or tablets will be enjoined from being imported even to the US, and meanwhile Samsung was able to get a free ride to produce the highest end phones, now generating enough profit for Samsung to continue basically as long as the phone market exists.

The bottom-line is that this verdict spells the end of trying to get Samsung from actually ceasing and desisting from using the stolen technology. And that was Steve Jobs' goal, not extracting a bit of cash that doesn't matter to Apple anyways.

Microsoft will wind up getting a lot more in royalties from Android phones than Apple ever will after all the appeals are done.

This is one huge Apple fanboy party for sure.

In the beginning, few here really cared. As time went by, someone spiked the Apple juice.

Now it's a giant monkey S#/+ fight in here.

Sure it's an large amount of money in damages. All of which will be repealed and or reassessed with patent and or other trade. Life goes on. After all, Apple is a major consumer in base components used in iOS devices to hardware in the Mac.

Read up, for f's sake. Apple DID offer Samsung to license the patents, and more than that Apple already licenses the patents to Microsoft.
What do you mean with "Apple is not into the licensing game"?

can someone please answer the most important part ... are the devices BANNED or is it simply about money?

Apple basically wants Samsung gone from the smartphone market. I mean they could build something with a keyboard that works like an old BlackBerry, but this is pretty much the end of Samsung touch screen products.

Apple isn't going to stop until the last competitor drops. They want 100% marketshare. It is worth spending all their reserves at this point to get there. Imagine no competition... They can price how they want and take as long as they want introducing a new model. They could make money like no corporation ever has.

As far as a monopoly goes... They would claim that anyone is free to make a phone as long as it does not use any sort of touchscreen capabilities.

Of course one thing to remember is that Google now owns Motorola Mobility and they own patents that actually make the phone make an actual phone call. I guess we will see where this all goes. Apple hasn't gone too hard after Moto or Google yet, but I predict with this victory they are going nuclear on everyone until they own the entire market.

Uhm no, because not every smartphone needs to be a copy of the iphone...

So please enlighten me and tell me how else a smartphone must look like? A rectangle, an operating system. Android can't have multi touch anymore? Pinch to zoom?

Wrong. In re Bilski only went up to the US Supreme Court because it involved constitutional issues. Unless Samsung is able to find a similar argument here, the Supreme Court won't bother to hear it.

It did not involve constitutional issues. It revolved around how well the "useful, concrete and tangible result" related to United States patent law.

Apple has stopped innovating and started only suing when they thought Siri was a great product, and Apple didn't even invent it. They purchased it, and have been doing nothing innovative since the iPhone 4 came out. Apple is resting on its laurels and playing the lawsuit game instead. Hopefully Microsoft becomes better than the iPhone so Apple will finally start innovating again.

When the iPhone came along, pinch & zoom and stuff were "So Simple, Yet So Brilliant" (~Bob Wiley)... they have every right to patent and protect intellectual property; You pay to design it and develop it, you have a right to keep it to yourself.

Well done. But it's far from over. Samsung will appeal.

Just great... now Apple can go after other big companies since there patents are deemed valid. I do not care who copied who. They have both copied from each other. Apple has copied many people in the past. This is going to cause more trouble in the long term for other smartphones. Competition is good. If the jury cared an ounce about the consumer they would have dropped this case.

Monopolies are not good even if the company itself is good or bad or wether it is fair or not. This is terrible news no matter how you slice it.

Yeah, um, actually not quite. You have BlackBerry and Windows Phone which are very distinct and creative in their own right. Check those facts first, buddy! :)

I disagree. Back when they were almost washed up, they still had some of the highest prices in the market. And who forces you to buy a product? You make a choice yourself; you think for yourself and you decide what's best for you. There have been many, many products that have been introduced - at the time ahead of their time - that have flopped. My point being, even if your supposed touchscreen dystopia really happens, that's hardly a guarantee people would still go for the product.

I think we just found the guy who wrote Obama's "You Didn't Build That" speech.

Heh, if Obama and I can agree on one thing, its that private companies do not deserve every cent of profits from an R&D investment as the poster I was responding to stated.

One thing that people here are missing aswell is that LG, Google, Motorola, HTC and several other companies are in violation of the same patents.

What do you think will happen when Apple goes after LG? Who will they get components from?

LG, Samsung and Sony control almost all patents to build LCD screens for an example what would apple do when they don't want apple to use them. Well I guess this might be the last Macbook Pro i can buy since Apple might get a shortage of materials to build me a new glorious Retina mac. Not sure I want the new cathode ray screen on next version :)

Again why would they do that? Apple proportionately pay them a hell of a lot of money for those screens.

The losers in that case would be LG, Samsung and Sony.

If Apple sues everyone and the courts tell them to stop selling their products, Apple will have a monopoly. Because Apple is going to use the fact that they won this case to sue other people. Eventually, Apple will be the only smartphone provider.

That's nonsense. You can clearly build smartphones without infringing on any of Apple's patents. All it takes is a bit of innovation.

Apple basically wants Samsung gone from the smartphone market.

They want Samsung gone from the "smartphones that look exactly the same as an iPhone" market.
