iPhone 12 Pro Max was a brand new form factor and didn't ship until November 2020. Yet, it was the most popular model of the series at launch. Let's not make excuses.
+/Max iPhones aren't a new concept??? People that consistently buy those larger phones are willing to wait vs a model that has no user base.

Hence why it is on the chopping block. Imagine that: loud internet whiners aren't an actual market.
Whiners that want prosper factual numbers not repeat I’ve % without base numbers to make relevance understandable.

This bar graph is a joke! Like % of what number specifically? Can you do the math with only 1 value in an equation? No.
Wow, 3%? That's worse than I thought.
Worse than what exactly? 3% of what total number?

This article nor the mention in the graph by CIRP states the total number. So this “3%” could be amazing vs terrible - without the total number nobody knows. No link to CIRP’s data as well ah time of article posting that I’m commenting on at this moment.

Take note the iPhone SE 3 production was cut in 6 wks of release. 6 wks lol.
Whatever happened to the pandemic being the reason for the low sales?
What happened to factual numbers vs inferring what value 3% actually holds? Hmmm.

Also nobody in their right mind thought pandemic affected mini sales when the past two years people purchased larger phones as they’re not travelling nor exercising outside as much. Sorry your statement is opposite of reality. Unless you meant what I’m stating. Also this is USA percentage only not global.
Eyeballing the chart, looks like the 2020 SE, 2022 SE, 12 Mini, and 13 Mini combine for around 12%, so there def is a market for a smaller and budget device that is actually modern. But Apple hasn’t really made that yet, so maybe Apple should just consolidate those devices? A full screen device in the body of the SE with Touch ID in the power button selling for $400 would probably do quite well.
Just remember the iPhone SE 3 production was officially cut in 6wks of release lol. That’s shows a mistake in assessing just how cheap the iPhone should go. Anyone recall the iPhone 5C when the 5S was launch how terrible that was?! Reiterating an old design too long (4yrs running from the SE 2 launch) is an insult to consumers.

Right now I feel Apple is in a hypocritical moment: touting better security of FaceID yet holding onto TouchID in 1 iPhone and in 2 iPads and ok 4 MBPs with 2 external keyboards.

Watch and you'll see a select group of people dispute these facts with the usual excuses...

"The mini failed because of lockdowns!"

"The iPhone SE caused lower mini sales!"

"It was too expensive even as the cheapest 5G iPhone!"

"I'd pay $2,000 for a mini if it had more cameras!"

"There weren't enough ads. My grandma wasn't aware of the iPhone 13 mini."

Watch and see here the FUD jumping on the machine without actual factual data just relevance without a base number of that that 3% represents. ;)

Again at time of my post this article does NOT directly link CIRPs data nor state the total current sales numbers of all iPhones this quarter in the USA but states 3% of what exactly? 10 million? 30 million? 40 million? That’s a big difference.

The issue here is not in the mini itself, but the UI. Many customers want to buy the biggest iPhone possible to better see the UI elements (not to watch movies all day long).

Here's an example of iPhone 5 (including iPod touch, iPhone 5s, SE 2016 etc) with iOS 6 and iOS 15. Which of these screens looks bigger?

Source data would be helpful. And what about global sales?

The Mini has never had a fair shake when presented as a side-kick to the regular or Pro models. The marketing doesn’t really sell it well enough. It is easy to handle and pocket/bag/purse.

Having had the Pro and Pro Max over the years, I switched down to the 13 Mini and love it, like the days of the 5. I would like Apple to ditch the SE and keep the Mini on their roadmap, even if it has a refresh every 3-4 years. I do miss the big lens a little, but I don‘t use the phone as a primary stills or video camera.

I’d love to be able to petition Apple to bring it back in the future. With potentially a hole punch & pill coming up or eventually all under screen elements for full screen real estate, it would still be a worthy size. And perhaps some Pro features can be added to it, assuming little to no impact on battery life.

At this stage, I have little desire or need to go big if I have a choice. So for the foreseeable future (next 4 years), I’m sticking with the 13 Mini.

The 13 mini is a fantastic phone, but still priced a little higher than I would prefer. I suspect that it will be form factor for the SE when it sees a major revision.

Considering the quarter lists 4 small form factor designs competing for about 10-15% of the market, it performed as expected. Had there been 3 or 4 generations of Pro and Pro Max offered simultaneously, the 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max would likely have market share in the low single digits as well.

I could see a contributing factor being limits of battery life in a device that small while running mmWave 5G
This was the reason I passed on going with the Mini, personally. I'm already pushing things to get through a day on one charge with a standard 12.

Interesting.
I'm one of those who stuck with the non-proversion for the longest time (6, 6S, X, well X didn't have a pro, but it has the same form factor as 6/6S), then decided to pull the trigger for a 13 Pro Max..... Low and behold, I can NEVER go back to small phones from the moment I opened the box.

I would love to go for the mini if it would have the cameras of the Pros. Dont mind the battery life I would just slap the magsafe battery pack on it.

Dang, I love my 13 mini…being on the IUP monthly program I feel more compelled to upgrade yearly, but may not this year…
This!

This program is ONLy available in the USA and can heavily affect consumers range of choices.

For example if a potential consumer considering both the iPhone SE 2/3 vs iPhone 13 mini and whom doesn’t care about TouchID vs FaceID the total price of the lower upgrade program basically affects the bottom line spent monthly for such a consumer. If photography doesn’t matter heck the budget consumer usually goes for a cheaper phone. Yet in the case of the iPhone SE 3 already production reduced and same tired deign from 4yrs ago (5 if you include the iPhone 7/8) some budget focused users feeling sour, also working now going to opt to a higher priced top tier pro models since the monthly upgrade program price difference is negligible.

I’m estimating the iPhone 14 Max is also going to have lesser sales: a much more expensive yet basic iPhone with 6.7” OLED display which is considerably much more expensive or with $149 difference in price from the 6.1” Pro (my estimate in pricing differences here) people will get the pro. Save this post for March/April report next year ;)

BS.
People are in for smaller phones but these prices are just crazy.
The mini will return in form of an SE and then it will sell much better. We haven’t seen all from the mini iPhone!
Anecdotally speaking, this might well be true: When my wife and I started looking for a new phone for her, we were torn between the SE and the Mini. The price difference settled it, and she bought the SE.

Perhaps the market for smaller phones has a comparatively large overlap with the market for less expensive phones?

This is horrible news. The mini is literally the perfect size for me.
I have a 12 mini and LOVE the size. I really don't understand why people want phones that are so big they can't reach across when holding it. I have big hands and I struggle to reach the corner of even the mini at times. To me, this seems clearly a case of size envy. Who wants the small one when it's next to the big one? You don't find out until later that the big one is too big. And you probably don't give any though to "Wow maybe that small one would have been the right size" ... you just deal. That 75" TV looks awesome in the store, until you take it home and realize it barely fits on your wall. I'll be horrified if I'm forced to go bigger in the future.
I own the 13 Pro Max…. Reaching the corner isn’t an issue - you don’t need to. You can do a small down swipe at the center bottom where the multitasking bar is and cause the entire screen to shift down.

- Release first version during a worldwide pandemic when people can't see it in person. I'm willing to bet most people see it as the "cheap" model and assume it's missing features.

- Once people can actually see it in person, immediately stop all advertising and promotional material for the phone

- Be shocked when it doesn't sell.

This was an utter failure by Apple marketing.

I truly believe there is space for a small, mostly fully featured phone in Apple's line up. They dropped the ball and didn't give it a good chance to succeed.
