Whether the data are accurate or not, or meaningful, that is an absolutely rubbish chart. It reuses colors, there's no way to tell whether it's a mini or on an 11, and same for other models. It also doesn't show data for previous quarters, which matters given release dates and when people are buying phones (or at least the customer make up - early adopters vs. stragglers, etc.)

That’s… exactly what they did.
The 13 and 13 mini have identical specs, other than the screen size and the battery for obvious reasons.
And the data speaks for itself, 3% on the mini versus 38% on the 13.
But the battery is a major feature. One of the reasons the original SE was a hit besides the price was that it actually had better battery life the the 6s (which had the same internals).

IF the 13 mini had a better battery life than the 13 AND was $200 cheaper than the 13 it might be a different story. But apparently that isn’t possible. As I posted earlier, the 13 mini just isn’t a good value comparatively.

Even more people would buy it if it was slashed by $200.
Even more people would buy it if it was slashed by $300.
Point is, even with it starting at $700, more customers still prefer the $800, $1000, and $1100 phone.
thats a invalid point, 100 bucks difference for better battery and bigger screen is kinda of a no brainer, only these who truly value the pocket size of 13 would be whole heartley invested in the mini. while these whos on the fence would opt for 100 bucks more. any bigger gap at 300 or more would start taking sales away from the regular 13.

I would've bought the Mini if it wasn't a compromise device. No ProMotion, two cameras. But Apple coaxed me into spending more money - I'm the fool, not them. Bon voyage, iPhone Mini.

Unfortunate. I used to praise Pro Max because I have large hands, but I now use a 13 mini and couldn't be happier. Downsizing everything I put in my pockets to as small as possible. The fact that there will be no iPhone 14 mini sucks but I understand.

The only thing I notice performance-wise is because of the (I think?) 3 gb of RAM instead of 4-6 on bigger phones I have to close out extra apps a little more often in the background. This isn't a big deal for me because I regularly close them anyway, and I've never felt it was "slow" during normal use. Battery is better than expected; I have most location and tracking stuff off and usually get to the end of a day with 35-40% remaining unless I run GPS on a roadtrip. The form factor is (just like the 5s) amazing; I even wish there was a smaller version.

tl;dr - Bought it, love it, zero regrets.

It has 4GB of RAM.

BS.
People are in for smaller phones but these prices are just crazy.
The mini will return in form of an SE and then it will sell much better. We haven’t seen all from the mini iPhone!
I hope so. Loved my 12 mini but the camera, storage and battery life were hobbled so the 13 Pro was too tempting. Give the same spec to the mini and it would have sold much better.

I have a SE 2 but I'll be ordering a 13 mini sometime this summer before the new phones. Or, depending, I may order right before the phone event, and then see if there's a price drop, then re order. Either way, the 13 mini is for sure my next iPhone, if they don't release (and rumors and all signs point to they won't) release a 14 mini.

I own an iPhone 6s and have been looking to upgrade to a similar sized phone for YEARS now. I'm not considering the SE because it's small screen size is a joke these days. The 12 mini had battery life issues and additionally the 13 mini's camera bump is just totally frustrating when used on a flat surface (e.g. to use a calculator app). I don't need a bazillion pixel camera either. I guess I'm in the market for an SE with a much larger screen and that's why I haven't given Apple a dime since I got my iPhone 6s. Everybody's different - I'm just saying what my reasons are.
Get the 13 mini anyway, you'll love it, battery life is good! Yes the camera bump is annoying, but that's present on any other iPhone too and I guess will be around for the next phone series.
At this point it seems that phone designers don't even care about bumps anymore, they'll just assume that everyone's using a case. Which is unfortunate as I hate using a case. Why would I pay premium for a beautifully designed piece of machinery if I then hide it in an ugly 20$ case?
Anyway, I guess camera bumps are here to stay so you might as well arrange your habits somehow. For me I just hold down my mini quickly with my other hand if I want to type something on a flat surface.

Realistically this means nothing.. they will likely keep the 13 mini in the line up this September alongside the 14 series (reducing the price by 100 or so) and continue to sell it until 2024 when they’ll just release another SE but this time it will basically just be a 13 Mini with updated internals!

I don’t think they ever expected them to sell loads and they knew this they aren’t silly. It makes perfect sense they done this so that they can continue selling the 13 mini until it turns into the SE and with the 14 series they will have Max versions of the iPhone that aren’t pro as well so it covers everyone’s bases. The person (myself included) who generally buys the minis are more interested in the form factor than updating the phone every year. It’s too niche to try and make it an iPhone 14 Pro but in a mini size (though I’d love this, not going to happen likely).

I will either upgrade to a 14/15 Pro or way more likely just wait until the SE comes out with this design. And if it doesn’t then I’ll just have to go for the normal size!

It’s funny, I was thinking I haven’t seen an article stating how badly the mini series is doing for a while, it’s long been overdue. For some reasons tech bloggers really have something against the mini series! I don’t think 3% market share is that bad for a niche product tbh.

Seems obvious that smaller portable devices will sell less well during a pandemic. Same as why Apple have not been in any hurry to bring out a successor to the 12" MB or 11" MBA.

Surprised by that. Was sitting at lunch this week and all four of us had the 13 mini and are so happy. Two came from the bigger format, while the other had the iPhone 8 prior.
I understand the price is an issue and people might just go all in, but the small format is just great.

I love my mini. It's everything an iPhone needs to be and more importantly it's portable.

It doesn't surprise me that it's not super popular. Older people can't see and have big fingers. The youth live on their phones so they need a huge screens with large batteries. Plus looking at trends for cars and houses, phones will only get bigger. A 45 year old, 300lbs person driving a F-350 jacked 8' in the air with a house with 5 garages, 8 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms and 3 kitchens isn't going to buy a mini ?
