Best way to save life is to just use the phone/device less. That's why you're seeing the drop because it's a shiny new beta and we keep poking the device combing through the new features. It's basically the same battery life, no improvements with a slight decrease due to less optimization because it's a beta.

I can disagree here.

I know a lot of people will lose battery quicker from toying with the new iOS, but I have been deliberately checking the battery drain while the phone is not in use, with no apps open in the background and can say I am experiencing much faster battery drain then on 4.3.3.

I'm not really too angry about it, as I HAD to have iOS5 now (I'm not a dev), but for me there is a notable extra loss of battery on iOS 5.

I will continue comparing to iOS 4.3.3 to make sure I'm right.

QUESTION:

has anyone backed up into the cloud?
my phone gives me the option to do it, but it says its going to take 10 hours to completion.
anyone?

I just browsed around 20 pages in this thread and not a single post mentions making calls with iOS 5.

Gizmodo says that when you install iOS 5, you will not be able to connect to your carrier.

I haven't tested this and don't know if it is true, but anyone reading this thread thinking about installing iOS 5 has been warned!

So you cant use purchased tones as text tones, even though there is a link for "Buy More Tones" at the top of the Text Tone menu screen.

Worked fine for me. 250.6mb backed up.

Is is true that now on the iPhone there is a separate app for music (called music) and a separate app for videos? If yes, could you please show a screenshot.

Thats if you use the method which bypasses UDID activation as far as i know

Has anyone managed a full back to iCloud yet. Mine just seems to stay on "less than one minute remaining" for ages!

I did, inadvertantly. I turned it on, and apparently, it did a backup of my iPad while I was sleeping (which is how it's supposed to work).

I have, however, realized that 5GB isn't much. I have 3.3GB of photos, so trying to backup my iPhone was problematic to say the least.

This is categorically false. You will not be able to connect to your carrier if, and only if, your UDID is not registered to your developer account.

Anyone know how to delete to photos that go into the Photo Stream album or do we have to wait until we can get access to iCould properly.

Two things:

First off, if you're noticing excessive battery drain on iOS 5, re-install the operating system, but this time, set it up as a new device, DON'T restore a backup. I had terrible battery life and drain (approximately 10% an hour, idle), but when I restored the device a second time, but ignoring the option to load a backup, the battery is on par with what I was experiencing before. Granted, this isn't a scientific test, but it should result in better battery life.

Secondly, I'm fairly disappointed that the Reminders app geo-fence feature only works with addresses stored in your contacts, OR for the location you are currently at (leave and arrive). I was hoping I'd be able to set a reminder to "call home" after I leave a particular venue (not necessarily the location of my contacts), but I guess we will have to wait and see if they add this ability down the road.

I have my iCloud email set up on my iPad and iPhone...how do I set it up on my mac?

Even though it's a .me address, Mail on my mac will not set it up as a MobileMe account. It will not get past the password, even though I know it's correct. Does anyone know what setting to use to get iCloud set up on mac Mail?

although it's a me.com address, it's not a mobileme account, it's an iCloud account, they're 2 different systems, you have to wait until you get proper access, unless you're a dev, in which case there are beta apps you can get for mac or windows.

iCloud isn't fully live yet.

Do you guys think if we want to turn off OTA notifications, and just leave on the SMS/Mail/Calendar notifications that will save on battery life? Never was a fan of the notifications away. Seems like a waste of battery. No major complaints on the battery life so far, but I thought I'd cancel edge and all the silly things like push like I had before. There's no "MASTER" off for notifications anymore which kinda sucks...

You can turn off any and all notifications just like you can now.

It's not live yet.

Yes, and the opposite

Alright, thanks. Hopefully next beta changes that.

I was wondering the same thing!

And as far as Apple Mail goes...can't config it either! :(
It only works on iPhone/iPad

Your right but I did notice some minor issues related to network.
Every time I reboot my iPhone, after introduce the pin, it doen't connect strait way to my network like before. I get some searching message and some times no signal (i think).

Music and photos don't count toward your free 5GB (Jobs specifically pointed that out in the keynote). If it's counting yours then it's a bug.

Jobs said that your photo stream (which I still haven't figured out how to use) doesn't count. I'm guessing they do count if they're part of a backup.

I want to know if iOS 5 runs smoothly. As of now I'm on 4.3.3 and it runs soo slow. Mainly just the animations are rather choppy or sometimes it just skips the animation when closing or opening an app. So, is there any choppiness at all throughout the OS?

Well, I have a Verizon iPhone so the latest OS version that I had, prior to the iOS 5 beta, was 4.2.8. That being said, I felt as if the animations weren't 100% on that OS version, and there were some noticeable slowdowns, so I'll say that 4.2.8 and 4.3.3 are relatively close in that regard.

iOS 5, at least in the beta form that it is in now, isn't much improved from the 4.x series. Granted, it's still a beta, and some things just outright don't work, so give it time and then we'll have a better idea on how much improvement there is.

I'll be honest here, and I'll probably be down-ranked for this, but the iPhone, at least in my four months of usage, isn't as smooth and responsive as everyone makes it out to be. Yeah, it's quick; but as someone who came from a Droid X prior to this phone, it's not noticeably faster or more responsive. In fact, during some operations, it's just embarrassingly slow, like switching between applications within a fairly short amount of time. I'm not saying it's terrible, but there is definitely room for improvement on the speed and responsiveness front.

Seems like an easy addition to come later, and an itch you can scratch right now: just add whatever venue you want to your contacts first. Why not? You can even add a contact from a dropped pin.

As betas go, it's not bad. But it is a glitchy beta.

.

When I installed iOS 5 I set up my iphone 4 as a new device, I still have battery drain
