Everyone commenting on Donde (3 decent songs) or the device (insane) but the real issue is that Kanye is trying something to help the artists gets bigger slice. We are freaking out that developers only get 70% when artists are in a system where they make 12%. Probably time to rethink the current system…Apple offers an artist 70% that would be a pretty good deal.

Is the album Donda or Donde? I assume the latter since I can't find it anywhere.

Doodie, Dookie?

I did get his album 'The College Dropout' after finding the CD case in a rental car. It wasn't bad, and I listened to it for a few months, and then moved on to other artists and then revisited it, and was like 'Hmm... Well, that didn't last long'. I just haven't listened to it at all since. But that happens... I have quite an eclectic collection, and some of it I really don't listen to very much anymore, and some just comes and goes off the playlist. I'm sure I'm not that unlike a lot of other people in that.

*shrug*

So that thing is a 'player'? It kinda looks like a controller for a... Nevermind...

I will be fascinated to see how this goes and how long this will last. Infamously Jay-Z refused to allow 'American Gangster' to be sold on iTunes because they wouldn't allow it to be only sold as a whole album.

Today it's on Apple Music etc. but it took close to a decade for that to change.

Kanye Super-Stans will snatch this thing up, but I'm not sure how far that will go. How long before he reverses course?

In my opinion that guy let fame go right to his head and now since His wife is going to Divorce him he needs to everything he can to make a quick buck ??

Isn't 12% better than 0%? iTunes directly targeted the rampant pirating that was happening in the MP3 era. That seems like a lifetime ago now.

Is pirating still a thing when streaming services are so accessible and have massive libraries?

I applaud him for thinking different, but I can't really see this endeavour working out in the long run. He's no Apple with a new iPod.

"...artists "get just 12% of the money the industry makes,..."

Perhaps Apple Music should sign artists directly. I doubt whatever services record labels provide nowadays are worth 88% of the music's revenue.

Sticking the album on a glowing rubber hockey puck and selling it for $200 is also an option I suppose.
They are not allowed to based on their agreement with the Beatles record label Apple.

I understand Ye needs to make more money, but here's an alternative idea: sell your customizable music as an app and collect 70%. Listeners won't need to spend $200 on a new device with no future, Ye gets rich anyway, Apple and Google still get their 30% cut, so everyone's happy.

I'm sure you're missing the point - it's not simply playing back music, nor is it just about changing playback etc, it's the concept of creating your own distribution and recouping all revenues.

yes most people don't need another device, and without mentioning if this will accept new songs/albums it's unknown/uncertain if this is jsut a 1-off move etc.

I think a LOT of people didn't fully read or comprehend the article much less get Kanye, and instead only see his antics etc and just disregard him. ;)
I mean he could do like Prince did in the 90s and create his own streaming/download membership platform. He’d get all the money

We had a decade of knockoff iPods, and it took another to bring us a poorly cut out smoke detector

View attachment 1960798

But an Imperial smoke detector (with only 8GB). I think he should have made the design more thermal detonator personally.

This may well be true.... But mental health affects so many people... saw a video on YouTube once of famous people and a list of their mental health issues... not a small list, and that's just what was publicly known.
I’m willing to bet we all have mental health issues to at least some degree. Not a “normal” one in the whole lot.

Most of us just don’t know it.

No one is missing the point, but you might be.

There is no app store for this crappy 8gb star wars turd looking mp3 player. If anything, it's a piracy law suit waiting to happen because people can swap stems (AKA songs) on a web forum, and all the music has to be managed in a web browser.

Giving his album away on the turd, er, Stem player, makes 0% and the dude is a freaking psycho loon that will throw it on every music service anyway or do something else crazy.

This was obviously one of his unthought out ramblings and musings. Maybe sell it as a direct download? Why limit to your crappy mp3 turd? It looks like a droid turd from star wars.

I don’t think i’ve ever listened to an entire kanye west song in my life. I’m obviously not the demographic for this album. But i applaud any artist who tries to take control of their music from the big music companies. Why create a separate $200 device tho? Why not just create a website & make the album downloadable to your phone or computer?
I believe Radiohead did what you’re describing when they released “In Rainbows” on their site where you could name your own price. I think I paid $3 to unlock the download. I’d have gone directly to the artist every single time if that were the norm. As I became more able to afford albums I’d offer up more.

Brilliant artist. Absolute trash human being. As much as I respect his art, I could never give him one red cent of my money.

Prince did that in the 2000’s not the 90’s.

Also Prince was all for MP3’s with his manifesto while every artis sided with Lars from Metallica against MP3’s worried about lost sales - seemingly protecting big music moguls interests cause the little money fame and travel expenses paid for was on loan (like every other artist signed to major label)

When Prince stated his manifesto at an award show all artists respected and saw the light with a standing ovation. Too bad it was recorded to see on tube.

Prince was a genius changing his name to get out of a forced record contract yet to protect ownership of his music yet to be released. Sony got their five albums mostly greatest hits. People that “the artist formerly known as prince” was stupid but we know better now.

I kinda see the same possibilities here - not the device but the idea(s) behind it.

We’ll see how this transpired and what other artists in other industries see, say, and do.

Someone’s not taking the divorce well ?

Anyone paying that for that novelty piece needs to have their heads checked and he’ll realise that soon enough and have the album on every streamer available.

This post shows you’re missing the pint. You’re still focusing on the device.

You still see Kanye as a clown and this as a dumb move and all about the device. He knows the device will not sell a lot or barely at all.

That’s what I’m saying you’re missing the point.

The device does more than just play MP3’s but I think you’re blind to see what it “can/could” do and what the secondary idea represents.

Your proposal to create or so a direct download would have the exact same affect. The next complaint if he did that is “why would I pay another subscription fee to listen to his music? “Why would I purchase his music off his site when I can stream it amongst a large group if artists for <$11.99 (example) from <Spotify/AppleMusic/name your choice I’d streaming service here>”

Just because he’s bi-polar doesn’t make him an idiot. Don’t think his antics is that of a fool. They appear to be foolish very few are just that, many are a distraction or more”.

Firstly his name is in everybodys mouth or on their KB if it were commenting in this thread, moreover if conversation about this is with people you know” think beyond the wrapping or what is just in front if you. ;)

You disagree that’s fine I respect that. Nothing more for us to go from here right?

I just don't get why he wouldn't just stick the album on his own site and sell it directly from there if the % cut is the issue. I'm sure he has enough followers to make that worthwhile.

He must have some serious investment in the company rather than actually care about the percentage and somehow I see it being a very niche epic fail.

There doesnt seem to be anything special about the device. Proper Stem based Mixing has been available in DJ software for years (mostly a failure due to a number of reasons).

The DJay App has the same functionality (and a whole lot more) for $5 on your existing phone/tablet and you can do it right with your existing music library.

The stem player website states it works with any track (not just stem based ones) so I'd have to guess it works on the same principal as DJay which is basically smart isolation of song parts.

The only real use I can see for it is maybe as a standalone karaoke-version generator.

He IS a clown. Plain and simple.

Not just with this, his stunts over the last several years, such as his classic “My greatest pain in life is that I will never be able to see myself perform” show what an out of touch, hyper ego driven narcissist he is.

He also makes widely dumb statements about his own albums “My album will never never never be on Apple. And it will never be for sale… You can only get it on Tidal.”. And, as we all know, a few months later, you could get the album everywhere.

He’s become a joke - a pitiful laughing stock. So much so that even one of the crown queens of the public adoration machine couldn’t bear to be with him - and when you’re even too much for Kim Kardashian, then you you’ve hit ‘rock bottom’.

And now he he the nerve to demand his remaining fans spend ANOTHER $200 on a cheap piece of Electronics that has an absolutely pitiful 8GB of storage. And talking about bad - the original Stem playe came with the following “professional“ instructions:

1645324782308.png

Holy cow - one of the worlds richest music artists released a device with instructions that even a 10 year old would feel embarrassed about.

He’s also failed to explain how anyone else is going to make money from this venture.

So instead of selling a CD or DVD for $10-$20 he’s flogging his questionable followup at $200 - and ALL that goes to him and his business. The Stem play probably costs $20 to make - if so he’s ripping his followers off and wanting to make major bank out of them. All because “I don‘t want to get ripped off by streaming services” while meanwhile ripping his followers off in the process.

And did I mention that you cannot download anything off the Stem player - if it breaks - there goes the ability to listen to Donda 2 (some might say that’s a blessing).

This is a pitiful terrible joke - and not even a funny one at that.
