Key Takeaways of 2018 MacBook Pro vs. 2017 MacBook Pro

When is Apple going to release something people can actually afford?

You have a wide range of iPads, MacBooks and entry level MacBook Pros. In addition many 3rd Party retailers such as Micro Center and Best Buy will occasionally run sales, not to mention Apple’s Refurb website.

These computers were not the designed for the everyday user. They are hellaciously expensive, but the Apple tax is not new.

TL:DR You can find a Mac at reasonable prices if you search.

That’s good to hear. I am still skeptical, but I am looking forward to it nonetheless.

I find it to be mostly useless, but also mostly harmless. I only miss having a physical ESC key. It's annoying not to have it, but after a while, you get used to it. Once in a while the touchbar is really handy though. You find a command that you otherwise wouldn't have been able to locate. 30% of the time it's annoying. 65% of the time I'm indifferent. 5% of the time I'm very pleasantly surprised. It's mostly a wash for me. I'd opt for a model without it if I had a choice, but I wouldn't go out of my way to avoid having a touch bar.

Already ordered mine. Maxed out except for the SSH I only went 1T on that. I just don't see the need for more on the go and my NAS and Thunderbolt Raid take care of the heavy lifting and archiving of projects.

Will be selling my 15 inch 2017 MBP Machine that was a custom one also with 3.1Ghz, 16Gig ram, 1TB.

I am a pro user, I run multiple VMs for work and the extra cores will help with that as well as the extra ram.
I am sure it will also be nice for my Video work in FCP as well as my audio work in Ableton.

Oh and I love the TouchBar. It was a bit wonky but as time has gone, by more apps I use have incorporated functionality into it that I really appreciate. But haters got to hate...

It's going to be an unpopular opinion here, but whatever. Here's my perception of the 2018 release:

- Rushed release. It's been over a year since they released the previous one, you would expect that they'd put at least some effort into advertising it, but it doesn't look like it. Rather they post it on the web and expect the media to do the work for them. Is all advertising going to be focused onto the mobile lineup now?
- Minor hardware upgrades. Better CPU, more RAM and more storage. Good hardware, but so do competition (XPS, Razer)
- Community opinion ignored. Keyboard has been "patched" to prevent free repairs, but it feels like the previous one. Touch bar is still there, consuming a fair amount of battery and taking the ESC key and space.
- Expensive. Prices for 15 Pro Macbook have been raised once again. IMO prices should reflect the quality of the product, more expensive, more quality, but it looks like it isn't the case anymore. Are they abusing of the Apple-fans trust?

I initially saw Macbook (especially pros) as glamorous quality devices with a top of the line battery duration and decent hardware. It seems like only the decent hardware is standing up. I thought this year we would eventually see a real upgrade from 2015 machines, but it looks like this isn't the case.

PS: No, it's not just me. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17513828

Would like to see some GPU benchmarks. Looking online it seems the Radeon Pro 560X are 2.6 TFLOP* GPUs in the 2018 15" models. How does this compare to previous 2017 models?

I'm curious about this too.. Wondering is the GPU is worth upgrading from my 2016 15" with the 460... I didn't upgrade to the 560 as I didn't feel it was enough of a performance boost, will this be?

I find the touch bar extremely useful. I was a skeptic at first.
I have really really disliked the Touch Bar, I actually got a 13" pro (have only used 15" pros) as well to avoid the annoyances of the touchbar.

Seriously just need a non-touchbar 15"
and a smaller trackpad on both the 13 and 15"
and while at it for the 13" put the usb-C port on each side, not both on one side

and boom their wonderful computers again.

And the whining continues. Apple gave you EXACTLY what you kept asking for and you just don’t let up. Since 2016 it’s all been about 32g RAM and how the computer wasn’t fast enough. They’ve done it but of course it’s still not good enough for you. Then of course there’s the shock of the price. It shouldn’t be a surprise because realistically, you would be stupid and moronic to think that Apple would be dropping prices.

Well, not exactly what I was asking for, at least?

Things I wanted, and would gladly pay for in a Pro laptop from Apple:

1: A keyboard that isn't uncomfortable and unreliable (and doesn't require 1 week of downtime if it does fail, because it's riveted in place.)
2: No touchbar as a BTO option
3: MagSafe
4: User upgradable ram and storage (never going to happen, but it's what I want, and you said everything we want)

These things shouldn't be asking too much from a laptop that costs as much as $4699 to $6699? (before AppleCare or Tax)

Hell, they could make a thicker case to accommodate a better keyboard, MagSafe, no TouchBar, etc as a BTO option! I'm sure there are many people that would use that option, if available, even if it did increase the cost.

I think the cost is too high for me to justify, considering the crappy keyboard. I just can't justify paying $4699 for any laptop with that crappy keyboard. I'd rather keep using my 2012-non-retina until it dies. The original KB still works BTW...

Now, I do agree that people looking at the max price point and complaining about the SSD costs likely aren't comparing apples to apples. And, I think the storage price points are what's adding to the sticker shock. I think many expected that Apple would just shift the storage at the old price points. (1TB for what 512GB cost, 2TB for what 1TB cost, etc) That would have matched Apple's past pricing behavior. We can debate if that was a reasonable expectation given component costs until we're all blue in the face.

Now is a great time to buy the 2017 15 inch Refurbs, (which even got a nice price drop today) and save yourself some serious $$$. Besides, no one will know you have last year's when you flash it at Starbucks hehe...

If you have a 2016/2017 you better off waiting for the new redesign in 2020 or something at this point.. No point to upgrade if it's not a full upgrade.. Especially when it comes down to the screen.

Am I the only one amazed that the 13" is still dual core? I get that it's not supposed to be the "powerhouse" of the macbook lineup but still, in this day and age, even for Apple to pay >$1000 and have dual core...

Not sure if you want to do that. The 8th gen CPU vs 7th gen performance is too wide of a difference. Normally I would be all for last year's model, but CPU-wise it's a noticeable difference if you're a power user.

Could anyone tell me if I can upgrade the RAM and/or SDD of a 15inch macbook pro AFTER being purchased? like, in an official Apple way (?)

If the non-official (user based) upgrade is possible I would like to know too.

Anybody? Please = )
Can't be done. Apple made sure, starting in 2012, that any $$$ Spent on Memory upgrades, goes straight into their pockets.

This is a pathetic “upgrade” by Apple and will mark the beginning of the end. They had to address the keyboard issue and did not. I had two of the Touchbar MBPs and both were terrible and the touchbar is a dumb gimmick.

They discontinued the 2015 machine which I bought instead. It is a great machine and Apple should have kept it along with the price point.

The upgrade prices for the MBP remain Apple insane when SSDs are so cheap. The screen is no longer anything special.

With all of the nice and cheaper Windows Ultrabooks out there, what is the real strategy Apple? Other than the entire Apple ecosystem there isn’t much left. I no longer need my Mac for music since iTunes went cloudy, so the reasons to stay Mac are shrinking.

Sorry, just not good enough Apple. Says volumes how far the executives have their collective heads in the sand.

It's not like people are complaining the new model isn't thin enough or that the battery life with the 32GB RAM version is too crappy. A lot of the complaints here people have been making all along...I think Apple's responded to those that it is willing to respond to (for example, the 32GB RAM issue) and ignored those it's decided it's moved past (magsafe, legacy ports, etc.).

I think the upgrade is a good compromise but would have been more competitive a few months ago (pricewise)...

Dell's XPS 15 offers what I assume is the same i9, with 32GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD (better graphics and screen) at 2899 vs Apple at 3899. That's quite a premium...I tend to agree that Apple has better build quality, but that's questionable if the keyboard is not adequately addressed (hopefully, it is). Dell was pushing 3000 for that build when it came out, but it's gone down since. I imagine Apple will knock a couple of hundred off the price in several months when the refurbs are available. I know the Dell has a thermal issue, but I'm more confident I could address that via repasting and adding thermal pads per user guides online than the same issue, if it's present, in the MBP.

I think this refresh is clarifying...like I said above, it's made it crystal clear what Apple is willing to compromise on and not...I think it offers a better picture to some whether or not to stick in the Apple camp.

Personally, I'm going to wait a few months and see how the keyboard does in the wild...Maybe wait till next early next year and see what the next gen line of PC gaming laptops looks like...MSI, Dell, Gigabyte, and ASUS have all made some interesting machines at reasonable prices. Apple's refresh is right on the cusp for me...which I guess is good news, considering that I was pretty sure I was jumping ship based on what I presumed the new update to be.

Only if you are skilled with a reflow station, if anything like the last model. With the T2 handling encryption that will probably complicate changing SSD further.

For a power-user yes, but for the average Joe that does occasional Final Cut Pro X edits, it's no biggie. Besides, the 2017 Kaby Lakes support HEVC hardware enhancements already, which is a plus that the 2016's and earlier do not have.

Oh and that 70% difference is from a comparison between a fully speced 2018 MBP against the base 2017 MBP. I don't know why they do that?

Yes, specially considering that the PC business is down since the introduction of the iPad 2

Touch-bar is SICK, annoying the first 3 months, but if you use iMessage for 6-10 friends/family during the whole day? YES I will say it, as an emoji picker, VERY NICE!

A little off-topic, but I'm betting that Apple's keyboard woes are intentional training of us in advance of transition to touchscreen keyboard.

(Not claiming originality on this idea, only that it makes the Touch Bar make much more sense. It will one day takeover the whole keyboard.)

I am personally betting on it.

I don't get the whole anti-touch bar thing. I was kind of against it at first. But it actually does a lot of very useful things in many applications.

Everyone acts as though not having physical function keys is a big deal. Get over it.

I'll bet the next form factor update that the entire keyboard is going to be Touch Bar style with haptic feedback; basically fully customizable to whatever you want; based on the app you are using, and what is being done at the time
