I don't get what people want. The SGS3 is lauded as being this terrific upgrade, lets see what it really did compared to the SGS2:

Got thicker (8.6mm vs 8.5mm)
Reduced the resolution of the front camera (1.9MP vs 2MP)
Increased processor power (1.4GHZ quad vs 1.2Ghz dual)
Increased screen size (0.5inches)
Increased screen quality (720 vs 480 but pentile vs amoled plus)
Increased Battery Capacity (needed with LTE and screen increase)
Added LTE

Now the 4s to 5

Got thinner
Increased resolution of front camera (1.2MP vs VGA)
Increased processor power (A6 vs A5)
Increased screen size (by 0.5 inches)
Increased screen quality (in cell tech)
Increase Battery capacity

Arguably the 5 is more of an upgrade from the SGS2, yet its seen as an utter disappointment. Hard to see the justification for that.
Who cares?? I would pick the S3 over the 4, my 4S, 5, iPhone 6, 7, 8 because it has a 4.8" screen. A 4.8" SCREEN! Apple will always stay stuck with their small screen size :) It's what makes the iPhone, an iPhone. Instead of naming it the iPhone 5 it should be called the "I can't see what I'm watching on this tiny screen 5"

I'm quite happy with the features of the iPhone 5. It suits my needs quite well and is a huge upgrade over my iPhone 4.

I'll might go for a 32gb iPhone 5, on a full price order which should be possible in my country. I'm not going to line-up at the Apple store with those other crazy people.

So who is going to buy one and drive a car over it, or smash it with a hammer so they will be famous on teh interwebz?

Got a 4s now. Think im gonna hold off till the next one or the next significant upgrade. I think the rumors spoiled it for me. LTE is not a big thing for me since it isnt offered in my country. Overall im a big apple and iphone fan. I think the guys still have a few tricks in the hats somewhere. ;)

relax brother. I think you've over used snap out of it a few too many times.

Just trying to save you my friend. ;)

Anyways, am I the only one disappointed the iPad mini was not announced. I like my Nexus 7, but a 8 inch screen with the same physical dimensions of the Nexus sounds good.

I'm disappointed that there's no NFC. And don't go there with the Passport excuse. NFC is dying for iPhone to join in. New way of sharing and receiving content would have been amazing.

When they were talking about how quick LTE is at loading stuff, all I could think about was:

I'm catching up on the keynote.

Flyover is utterly useless, other than looking cool. Google Street Maps makes so much more practical sense. Plus Google Earth did this ages ago.

Panorama mode? As an Apple fan, I'm honestly embarrassed. Welcome to last year.

But congrats to iOS devotees (mean that honestly).

Yup...underwhelmed

I've had every new iPhone since the original...and I'm underwhelmed. I thought there would be that 1 wow factor that would have me in line, but no dice. Maybe if I actually see one and the screen feels huge, it may change my mind. However, I'm thinking I'll hold on to my Benjamins and see the new, new iPad that may be out next month. I'm still rocking an original iPad 64 Gig 3G, so a smaller form factor with speed would probably give me more of the wow feeling from :apple:.

I never know how to decipher these types of threads.

Are folks literally disappointed because it's not a super phone...

Or is it really a money/no upgrade eligability issue, and it's just easier to place blame on what the iphone can't do?

Has nothing to do with money. I am disappointed that it yet again, in my opinion, is a small incremental upgrade. Many features are just hitting it that other phones have had for 1 or 2 years. Size, for me, is way behind curve.

I don't know how anyone could look at this and say it is light years ahead of any of the heavy hitter phones out there. I have many iDevices in the house, all the computers in my house are Mac's, I have 3 Apple TV's and lots of other Apple equipment so don't paint me as a basher.

I wasn't impressed with the 4S but I got it anyway, but this time I will not. My 4S is already on eBay and I will pay full retail price for a S3.

There are super cheap phones that have had panorama forever. My kid's dumb phone even does it. That is not a super new feature. Take a picture while shooting video....yea, lots of other phones out there do it already. There seems to be lots of catch up on this phone...or maybe it wasn't intended to be catch up but other phones came out with the features first. Kind of a draw back to having all the leaks. It gives manufactures time to beat Apple to the punch. Seriously... .5 inches taller? Really? My hands are big, my eyes are getting older, the phone is too damn small. But my use may be different than yours. I have a computer in my pocket that I might use once in a while to order pizza or call home. 1200 shared minutes on my account and I use less than 20 a month.

Man I wish they would set a release date for the Galaxy Note 2 on Verizon.

Got thinner Who cares, more battery is needed. Keep the thickness and give us a battery
Increased resolution of front camera (1.2MP vs VGA) Still behind the curve on the big hitter phones
Increased processor power (A6 vs A5) Still no quad core? And no talk about how fast it actually is. No talk about how much ram either.
Increased screen size (by 0.5 inches) Only in one direction
Increased screen quality (in cell tech) And didn't use the space saved to give us a better battery.
Increase Battery capacity And kept the same talk time so big fricken deal. "It's got a bigger battery....but now it eats more power so it don't matter."

My words in red

The GS3 screen is much better than the GS2 screen and it also has a 1.5 Ghz processor. The battery on the GS3 is very good and i got an increase while not having LTE on my carrier.

And the iPhone battery got an increase alright. From 1430 mAh to 1440.....W:rolleyes:W

You people can keep preaching this lie, but the GS3 screen sucks. Not even a little. It just flat out sucks. It's dim, it's dank, and everything looks like a funky smurf blue color. Then you have pentile which is instantly discernible when compared to non-pentile displays because it just looks wrong.

And the S3 has what? Something like a 2100 battery.

You have gs3 but your talking about the iPhone5. If the gs3 was as good as people claim they would not be on a apple site.

Umm....there are like 5 or 6 different color modes to choose from depending on your conditions and likes. I feel the screen is stunning. Very clear and easy to read.

It's really that low? Man, you'd think Apple would be good to its users and puts in a battery that just STEAMROLLS the competition considering iOS works efficiently on a smaller screen but no, still 1440mAh?

Was this directed at me? I don't have a S3 yet. But will as soon as my 4S sells on eBay.

But the wife sill has her 4S, son has a 4, we have several iPods in the house, 2 iPads, 3 Apple tv's and several Macs. So yea, even after I get my S3 i'll still be here.

It's your money. Speak with your dollars. You'll be the one stuck looking at that screen.

Also, how does Apple get away with blatantly lying about the "world's thinnest phone"?

Don't they pull this every year? Don't people call them out on this? What are they, the Republican party?

Well, they have the world's longest phone, so...

My own summary of the iPhone 5 is basically this:

Welcome to last year, Apple.

It isn't an insult. This is good for devoted iOS fans.

OK lets see now:

  1. People wanted a bigger screen - Check
  2. People wanted an improved retina - Check
  3. People wanted LTE - Check
  4. People wanted a better camera - Check
  5. People wanted a new design - Check
  6. People wanted it faster - Check
  7. People wanted 5ghz wifi- Check
  8. People wanted better battery life - Check
  9. People wanted better Siri - Check
  10. People wanted better voice calling - Check
  11. People wanted NFC - Unchecked, can't have it all!

Well you see people like Calidude should be thanking Apple for giving them something to gripe about, such as that one missing feature. I mean otherwise they wouldn't have anything to do with their lives! Last October these same people were complaining about no design change and now that there is an improved design they still aren't happy. People won't be happy unless the new iPhone can do everything and raise their kids for them. It is just a phone people.

coming from iPhone 4, I'm NOT disappointed! :p

I have a 4 and I'm still not excited about it. LTE is somewhat appealing.

But having to screw around with all the accessories, docks will be a PITA. I'd planned to preorder, but am going to wait and see what the initial reports are.

Even more dissapointing is the iPod Touch refresh doesn't bode well for the mini. First fall on awhile that I'm not sure I'll be buying any Apple products.

I wouldn't say that at all (and lets ignore the fact that you're comparing a phone to an entire mobile OS).

In fact, as someone who moved from an iPhone4 to a Galaxy S3 and subsequently posted a 'grass isn't always greener' thread on these forums, I'd argue that we've reached a point at which none of the major mobile OS's are leaps and bounds above any of the others. Android certainly isn't perfect - far from it (I'm currently running a custom Jelly Bean rom on my S3 and I wouldn't call it evolutionary by any stretch) neither is iOS or WinPhone 8.

It's all about personal preference these days - what phone do you prefer in your hand? which eco-system do you find most satisfying to use? Your answer represents your personal preference and not which is 'better' and certainly not which is "2-3 years ahead" :)

Very, very well said. I am glad you said this. All the fighting about iPhone vs Android is pretty much done now. They are both good operating systems. It comes down to what your preference is just like you stated.

It is the thinnest. Sure the RAZR HD is 7.1mm, except it has that bump at the camera, which is 11.1mm.
