Is this a “new” iPhone 8 Plus? Because the current one comes with 3GB ram. According to the picture it will come with 2GB

3D Touch screens are thicker than normal screens. Also heavier. Compare the heavy 6S specs with the much lighter 6. Glass backed phones are a lot heavier and a bit thicker than just aluminum. It makes sense to ditch all that weight and thickness if moving up to a 6.1" screen.

Maybe there's something wrong with me, but if there isn't some form of touchID on one of these new phones i won't be buying one. Going to have to look elsewhere...

Definitely.
Whatever the alleged improvements in security it's far too creepy being watched, particularly by a camera that can detect gaze, facial expressions, and so on. I remain unconvinced that it won't somehow be used for advertising.
Anyway, it's only the Apple Watch which is keeping me on iOS at the moment, so if something equally useful comes along (not Android Wear) then that problem will be solved.

3D Touch has been implemented system wide in iOS at this point; removing the feature makes the the OS more difficult to navigate. Can't believe apple which prides itself on software and hardware meshing would do such a thing

3D Touch is not implemented specifically. What is implemented system wide is the Bio metric authentican api.

So now instead of Touch ID prompt, you will get a Face ID prompt. They have done an amazing job of abstracting the hardware from the software.

What. The. #@!?.

That makes no sense, you’re paying several hundred extra to get a notch then?

ahahahahahahahahahahaha...

Either Apple or Kuo is crazy.

I'm going to enjoy reading the arguments as to why this is a good idea.

I don't think most people use it???

I use 3D Touch all the time. It's really convenient to shortcut the application directly what you want to versus navigating through the whole application. It's also nice to use for peak/pop with emails, messages, photos without actually opening the entire application. Quite a few third-party applications I use have 3D Touch capabilities and once you use it more often, you really start appreciate it.

Am I missing something, or is Apple on track to get rid of features even faster than putting them in? 3D touch is incredibly useful. So is TouchID. Plus, customers expect high-end phones to have great cameras.

One step forward... two steps back?

Because it’s not inuitive. Nor is it ubiquitous. It will never see widespread adoption until it’s done right and more available, and this rumor suggests Apple’s direction is to abandon it.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo today shared additional details about the rumored 6.1-inch iPhone that he expects to launch in the second half of 2018.

iphones-2018-kgi-800x492.jpg

Note: KGI's image has a slight error. iPhone 8 Plus has 3GB of RAM.

We already know the device is said to have some iPhone X features, including Face ID, but with some design compromises to achieve a cheaper price point. That will include an LCD screen, as known, and now Kuo says the device will have an aluminum frame, single-lens rear camera, and no 3D Touch.

In a research note obtained by MacRumors on Tuesday, Kuo added that the 6.1-inch iPhone also won't adopt the iPhone X's stacked logic board and L-shaped battery pack. Instead, he said the device will have a standard non-stacked logic board and rectangular battery pack like the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

Kuo believes the 6.1-inch iPhone will be a mid-range device priced between $700 and $800 in the United States, up from his previous $650 to $750 estimate. The device is expected to be announced around September-October as usual alongside a new 5.8-inch iPhone X and a larger 6.5-inch version dubbed iPhone X Plus.

KGI Securities expects the 6.1-inch iPhone to account for around 50 percent of the new iPhone lineup's shipments.

Interesting, so Apple is keeping it's pricing strategy even though it seems as if the iPhone X didn't sell as well as expected, most likely due to price. I really thought they would have kept the flagship at $800ish instead of almost 1k. I suppose they are making money either way so it doesn't matter to them, but I wonder when consumers keeping their old phones because of cost will catch up to them.

Either way I'm still going to get the 6.5" OLED. I'm really hating my X because it's so tiny, I can't read anything on it and miss my 7 plus. Although I despise the 18:9 ratio, or I believe the X has an even more narrow ratio. But still the 6.5" is a much larger screen than the 7/8 plus even with the stupid aspect ratio.

This 6.1 inch LCD iPhone is likely the iPhone SE Plus. Physical size slightly smaller than 8 Plus, but larger display. $699/$799 for 32GB and 128GB, and equipped with the A11 Bionic chip.

A 4.5 inch LCD iPhone SE (2018) will likely have the same form factor, physical size similar to current SE. $449/$549 for 32GB and 128GB, and equipped with the A11 Bionic chip. This will be introduced in March.

At this point, I expect the 6.1” cheap iPhone to have internals of iPhone 4 and price of iPhone X. iPhone X2 will move to even higher tier pricing starting from $1300 for 8GB model.
Afterall, shareholders need to be kept happy, isn’t it?
