If Apple releases a gimped 6.1" model, I am begrudgingly going to switch to the Pixel 3 or a Galaxy S9 come this fall.

Man, I played around with the Pixel 2 XL in Best Buy the other day. Slick. There's something about that phone I really, really like.

Why? You'll still have the X to buy? And thanks to Apple, everyone else has jumped on the stupid cost phone pricing.. The Pixel 3 will cost the same as an iPhone X.

I like my Apple Watch too much, I sent the 8 I had back as it's a good improvement but boring, I may wait till the inevitable sell off of iPhone X stock if Apple drop it when the 11 is launched if it's cheaper. Will stick to the smaller screen.

The S9 will be launched at MWC I see next month. This 6.1 model would be alright if it kept 3 Touch, well I use that all the time, then again it would be too big for me. It will be interesting to see what the new LCD screen tech is like though.

Yeah, I even said on here once he got things wrong and was hammered, this was when I was hopeful the X would have Touch ID still...... KGI is one hell of a reliable source for rumours and a LOT turn out to be true. People may not like this story, but it has a very good chance of being accurate.

There is no guarantee the X will drop to $500 or $600 at a carrier. No guarantee I can trade the 8+ in for a free X on a 2 year agreement. No guarantee Apple will EOL the device either. Pixel 2 starts at $649. It won't jump to $999 this year.

Pixel 2 XL is nice, but the screen issues is like winning a lotto ticket because you have a low chance of getting a nicely manufactured OLED screen.

I would hardly miss 3D Touch (the only value I see in it is moving the cursor around your text boxes, otherwise I find it gimmicky, pointless and unintuitive - hard press to preview, soft press to open? That’s clearly the wrong way round!) but it’s a standard feature now, removing it would be really weird. Maybe on the budget model, but one in the same price tier as models that already have it? Weird.

I was thinking of the Pixel XL phone costing 900 in the U.K. which I’d of thought you would want if your coming from a Plus iPhone?
And that’s an overly optimistic price drop! I was thinking more like a hundred off the cost.

Cheap is not good but the no 3D Touch is like a step back from Apple take his rumors with a grain of salt

Agreed.

The 6.1-inch iPhone X if pure BS ... it's not going to happen! Conflicting early rumors of DPI, resolution and now 3D Touch when Apple is STILL actively implementing 3D Touch (including iOS 11.2.5 update released today) ... just confirms nobody knows diddly on 6.1". Further, using Aluminum vs Stainless Steel suggest this is actually a 4" iPhone X to me.

So the new Apple mentality is, “Not everyone uses it so let’s drop it...?”
And $800 is midrange??
Yeah Kuo needs to find a new word for “the step down from flagship.”

I think it will be $799 for this “iPhone 9 Plus”, but at that price it will need dual cameras, 3D Touch and wireless charging. I think 3D Touch will be there regardless, but without wireless charging or dual cameras I think the price point would need to be more like $699.

After all, the 2018 X will probably be around $899; without OLED, dual cameras and wireless charging, I can’t see the 6.1” iPhone being priced any higher than $699. Even with FaceID, that won’t pull it up to $799 if that’s all it’s got over the (then) year old 8 Plus, which will be priced around $699 in September. And that $699 8 Plus will have wireless charging, dual cameras and 3D Touch.

I am not buying another iPhone with 3 gigs RAM. I’m tired of the constant app refreshes. The iPhone X is the last iPhone I’ll own until Apple ups the amount of RAM in their phones.

I just named some figures, I expect a $200 price drop on the X if anything. Nah, if there is a Pixel 3 w/ 18:9 aspect ratio, QHD or 2160 x 1080p display, 4-6gb RAM, 5.8" screen, etc, then I would get that over the Pixel 3 XL. 2 XL has too many QC issues.

Performance complaints about 3GB RAM on iPhone are exceedingly uncommon. There doesn’t seem to be any reason for a 4GB iPhone.

Sure, 1GB makes the iPhone 6 a poor performer but even the 2GB in the SE/6S/2017 iPad makes a world of difference. 4GB is nothing anyone’s been clamoring for.

Maybe a few years from now.

This won’t happen. If someone is upgrading their 6s/7/8 and buys the new regular iPhone (that would start at a price higher than their 6s/7 at a minimum) and it’s missing capabilities that they are used to then that’s a recipe for disaster.

This thing sounds more like an iPhone SE 2 Plus (what a name, lol). Are we really sure it’s going to look like the iPhone X? I didn’t think you could bend LCDs at the corners. I know this thing has a smaller margin but is it enough for those crazy rounded corners that Apple had to fold, as shown in their video? What if it uses an in-display Touch ID and doesn’t have a notch, just a slightly thicker top and bottom like Samsung? That would piss off a bunch of people, lol.

Are these new phones getting less and less exciting? And less of a must have?

Seriously, that notch doesnt do it for me. The looooong display but narrower is not good for reading books or viewing webpages in portrait mode.

I'm actually thinking my next Apple phone might be a cheap SE upgrade. Keep all the things that worked about the OS in a smaller phone package. When my 6S+ eventually dies, get a cheap big screen Andorid phone I can load my music and books and videos onto to watch in bed. Not with a phone plan. Sometimes one device to do it is overkill. I'm pretty sure I can live without the fancy video/photo modes if they upgrade the SE camera a bit.

And I like Touch ID because me and my partner can register fingers and unlock the phone. FaceID needs to recognise more than one person and personalise the screen layouts/apps for each person. The hardware is more than capable. It's the crap software (and iTunes too) holding back usability.

Oh well, see what yawns September holds. And how much Ming got wrong along the way ;)

Glad I return the X with 3GB of RAM! The 2018 gets 1/3 more RAM at 4GB and the new 7nm A12 SoC inside! I am buy this phone in December 2018 unless the new SE looks like a good enough buy to me! I don't hang around kids much, so I am good with a SE! LOL!

It’s uncommon for people to complain about the amount of RAM in a phone because the majority of people who uses cellphones don’t know or care what’s inside of it, they only care that it works as intended. However there are a lot of complaints about apps constantly reloading which is directly attributed to the lack of RAM in iPhones. I’m only calling out RAM as the culprit because I know how much is in the phone.

Point is I’m not complaining about the overall performance of the phone, I am complaining about the phone not being able to keep more than a handful of apps open without reloading.

You realize there isn’t enough OLED production capacity on the PLANET right now to cover this years smartphones across the industry right?

If Apple doesn’t go OLED it’s because there simply aren’t enough worldwide to add the extreme burden of the numbers Apple moves, not because of cost savings.

On a different note, no 3D Touch is complete crap on KGI’s front. Aside from the SE (and likely to be on the SE update) it is crystal clear 3D Touch is one of Apple's strategic technologies, it’s going to be there.

First of all that’s not true every android phone has an OLED display even one plus has them and will continue to have them for about 550.00 bucks. Albeit they don’t make the profit Apple makes but Nevertheless OLED is not a problem it’s apples margins that they have to maintain. FYI OLED panels aren’t even that much more for Apple but they took it too far with the pricing and it’s biting them now with flat sales of the X. Also why would anyone want the 6.1 inch phone when they can buy an iPhone 8 Plus with a better camera ? 3D Touch is something that I dont use so I don’t blame them as it was a gimmick. But gimping the camera is a no no . Luckily I’m not biased towards one OS over another so it won’t take much for me to go to android, if Apple really fragments the line up in such a way that I can get better hardware for 3-400 cheaper. At this point in time both Android and iOS are on pretty equal footing .

It's 100% due to cost savings.

OLED production capacity exists and right now, Samsung has excess capacity due to weak iPhone X demand for this calendar year.

You're confusing OLED production capacity with Samsung's monopoly on OLED. Samsung has exclusive contracts for the raw materials and equipment for OLED production for the next few years. If Apple wanted OLED across all its products for 2017, Samsung could have built the production lines last year.

LTPS LCD is simply cheaper to produce. It makes sense to exclude 3D Touch and OLED on a $799 6.1" iPhone when the main selling point in 2018 is Face ID.

The 6.1-inch LCD iPhone, is likely simply the next step for the iPhone family, replacing both the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.

The handset will be priced between $699 and $749

It will feature an aluminum frame similar to the iPhone 8 (instead of stainless steel),

It will feature the same camera "notch" as found on the iPhone X, accommodating the Face ID, but it will not sport a true edge-to-edge display, because of the limitations of LCD technology.

The 6.1-inch iPhone is rumored to lack 3D Touch and have 3 gigabytes of RAM,

The 6.1-inch LCD model to have a 2,850 to 2,950mAh battery in rectangular shape larger than the iPhone 8 Plus battery

The 6.1-inch iPhone is also rumored to drop several of the iPhone X’s more advanced features, with just a single rear camera instead of a dual camera system,

The phone sounds rather good and I’ve followed the rumours closely. If this iPhone exists it’ll be released just as my current contract ends.

There’s only one significant snag. The apparent lack of 3DTouch. That’s a deal breaker for me and would put this phone instantly off the shopping list.

You can consider buying iPhone X when it's price drops in September this year.

I have a feeling the price will still remain high as it’s going to be discontinued in that form. The remaining stock will be valuable as it’ll be very close to the newer X variant.

I think i’ll be getting a discounted iPhone 8 the way these rumours are evolving. I really can’t see the point in spending a lot more when iPhones all essentially do the same tasks I need. My days of excitement over releases was killed off in 2016 lol.

You really sure iPhone X will be discontinued this fall?

Virtually certain.

The 6.1" LCD will be $799. The iPhone 11 will be $999. There's no room for iPhone X at $899, nor does Apple want to lower the price of OLED + Face ID features to $899.

Like the iPhone 7 now I think we’ll see a repeat where the iPhone 8 sales will boom in October/November time when the prices come down. With prices getting higher the trends are changing in my part of the world where people are starting to bargain hunt lol.
