Finally, it was my time to pick up an iPhone X via apple upgrade program and I have to admit that I was hesitant because of the posts and now I believe the negative posts are from either people who demand too much for today or Trolls. Love the face Id and swipe to close. I do have one complaint to apple - It's too well made and quite slippery to handle or even leave on a piece of furniture, this phone has legs and moves all on it's own. Searching for a nice clear case today.

Ha! The glass backs are something else. I had my phone well placed on my sofa, turned for a few moments, and heard a thunk! My iPhone had hit the floor. Luckily, it was onto my rug. After watching it move on it’s own a few times after that, I immediately got online and ordered a clear case. I’ve been keeping cases on it since.

I'll take a look. OLED is nice on my X, but not necessary. I don't need 3D touch either. Really just depends on RAM.

Agree on OLED.

After having my X for almost two months, I'd much rather have the LCD panel of my 6 plus. That's my only nit on an otherwise outstanding phone.

Apple really needs a 5.6" LCD device in the $600-$650 range to round out a decent lineup. There are a lot of people who don't want a phablet the size of the iPhone 8 Plus but do want something bigger than the SE. Their only choice will be a carryover iPhone 8 or the iPhone X.

Nope, just following the same pattern set with the SE. non-flagships don’t get flagship features.

Long Press pales in comparison to 3DT, which is what I said above. So the new lcd iPhones (thankfully Apple has produced a good non-oled model), the compromise is no 3dt.
Since when were the 8 Plus and 8 flagships?

There are all sorts of things here that don't make sense to me here in just the sizes:
  • Why have a 6.1" TFT size rather than making it 5.8 to match the physical dimensions of the X2/Y/whatever?
  • Why would that phone be quoted as 320-330PPI - wouldn't it be obvious that Apple would use the exact same screen 326PPI as the 8 for cost savings/operational efficiency?
  • Why is there no TFT plus? A big part of the demographic that would pick up an 8+ for a larger screen isn't going to fork out for X-series premium.
  • Why 480-500 PPI on the 6.5" OLED model? OLED screens are famous for production issues and they already have a custom OLED product via Samsung. Would they really spin up a whole new process to get a 10-20% greater pixel density on one phone? I don't think so unless it was to hit a particular resolution target - and the only one I can think of would be native 4k, which would require an insane 750-ish DPI.
Plus, Apple killing 3D touch on one model of phone for cost seems like such an odd thing to speculate on. It must *kill* them that they haven't figured out a way to roll it out for iPad Pro. They are finally getting to a point where there's enough adoption that people think its worthwhile to try force-pressing things. It's basically the right click of the iPhone.

To me, the most likely candidate for an iPhone 9 (base cost) model without a home button would be to get rid of the curves and notch and go with a taller rectangular screen with top and bottom bars similar to the samsung galaxy s8/9. Other that, make it the same screen tech and incremental increases to components and go for either a lower price or higher margins. Unless they plan on eventually merging the 8/X lines back together, its likely the lower end will start to focus on lowering cost and the higher end will focus on newer technology.

Given that I can do everything with a ‘long press’ on my iPhone SE, that uses ‘3D Touch’ on the latest iPhones, is it actually needed?
Is the SE different in that respect than the iPhone 6? Because on my iPhone 6 quite a number of the things available with 3D Touch aren't available via a long press.

Am I the only one who wants a screen bigger then 6.5?
With that aspect ratio I would only see a 0.01 inch increase in active screen size against my 7plus.
The iPhone X has almost the same exterior dimensions (except thickness) as the iPhone 6/7/8. I expect the iPhone X Plus to also have almost the same exterior dimensions (except thickness) as the iPhone 6/7/8 Plus. That by definition pretty much precludes a taller screen in landscape mode.

But will that be sustainable business?
Rather sooner than later other display manufacturers will catch up with Samsung in phone OLED displays and competition will drive costs lower.

Like what?
As far as I can tell, some 3D Touch actions are replicable with long press, and the ones that aren’t are essentially shortcuts into an app, eg. Camera, that barely speed up the action, according to reports. So I remain unsure what the actual benefit is.

70% of iPhone users could care less about 3D Touch. Including myself on my 8+. :apple:

I suspect that's true. I use it only infrequently, but I'd probably be cheesed if it disappears.

Does this mean the end of TouchID on future flagship devices? I guess I will be holding onto my 7+ for many years to come.

Yes, but that really isn't news, however you feel about it.

Seven to $800 is really not “an affordable phone”, that is still an expensive phone and it ought to include a higher end camera and 3D Touch. These rumors are triggering me because this is the model I had my sights set on. Maybe I’ll be keeping the 7 Plus another full year.
really - would like to see US carriers required up front full payments - I bet iPhone sales will take a nose dive but as long as Apple continues to be bail out by the carriers this pricing nonsense will continue to be out of control.

To speak nothing of the buy one get one/two free promotions that Samsung also relies heavily on.,..

No Touch ID, no buy for me...guess my 7+ is my last iPhone (unless I upgrade to the 8+).

When Apple introduced the iPhone 5s, with the mobile industry's first-ever 64-bit processor, it surprised the entire mobile industry ... it took Qualcomm over a year to produce it's first credible 64-bit processor, and Apple was able to capitalize on that when the "6" was announced.

I was working at Qualcomm on their Snapdragon line when the 5s was announced, so I know first-hand just how much of a shock it was to the entire mobile industry.

10-bit color is just-about to hit the mobile industry ... if Samsung gets there first (via their S9 & S9+), Apple "may" need to scramble (I say may because I believe they support 10-bit capture internally, just haven't yet offered it up to third-party Apple App Devs).

Very specifically, if Samsung announces support for 10-bit extended color space capture & display later this month, every single iPhone in existence will IMMEDIATELY lose it's luster !

Apple's market cap will tank, and Samsung will be the talk of the town until Apple catches up.

Apple should have gone DEEP & WIDE color at the exact same time (at the intro of the iPhone 7 family) ... instead, they just went WIDE.

Apple should have NEVER transitioned away from including a Hardware Home Button, as now, Users have NO efficient mechanism to manually manage their DRAM.

It sure would be nice if those who write for MacRumors would point out some of the very obvious deficiencies in Apple's products ... Apple's upper mgmt generally sucks at product planning !

10-bit extended color space capture & display is a much BIGGER deal than anything Apple has done since the A7 processor was first introduced ! ... HEVC-encoded BGRA photo content, packaged in HEIF containers, and ultimately called HEIC photos, is what makes it possible, and Apple has support for all this in new iPhones & iPads (so what's the hold-up Mr. Tim Cook ?).
