This is so weird so the 6.1" is a comprise between the two other high end phone sizes? Just weird.

I won't be surprised to a see a Plus sized OLED model. But everything in between I am doubtful. What I would like to see is ProMotion, I feel that my iPhone X has a bit of ghosting which is too noticeable compared to the ghosting on the 7+, which is barely imperceptible.

And one more thing... the notch needs to go. While it's a good compromise for the branding of an Apple device, it's an ugly design aesthetic.

ProMotion would be great. The notch isn't as bad as everyone thinks. I am used to it.

I have a feeling that Apple will be the first company to fill the notch once the camera isn't in use
A 6.5" bezel-less iphone would pretty much make an ipad mini moot. As an ipad mini user, this saddens me, but perhaps this truly is the end of the mini. Unless Apple goes bezel-less on the ipads, and then perhaps the mini may live? Who knows what Apple will do. Gonna be a lot of speculating. We gotta wait a whole year to find out.

Yes the mini is dead. I have two iPad 2's for my two son's. I would like to see the iPad Pro 10.5" go to 12.9" with same form factor and the iPad Pro 12.9" to 15". This makes sense. I rarely use my 9.7" iPad as the iPhone does everything I need it to do.

Apple will launch a trio of new iPhone models in 2018, including 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch models with OLED displays and a 6.1-inch model with an LCD display, according to respected KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Kuo believes all three models will be equipped with a full-screen notched design and TrueDepth camera system like the iPhone X.

Kuo expects the 5.8-inch model to have 458 pixels per inch, suggesting the second-generation iPhone X's display will likely continue to have a resolution of 1,125×2,436. He said the 6.5-inch model will have roughly 480 to 500 PPI, while the 6.1-inch model is estimated to have between 320 and 330 PPI.

In his latest research note, obtained by MacRumors, Kuo said the 6.1-inch model will have a lower-resolution LCD display and target the low-end and mid-range markets with an estimated $649 to $749 starting price in the United States. His research note didn't outline any pricing estimates for the next 5.8-inch iPhone X, which currently starts at $999, or the all-new 6.5-inch model.

If accurate, next year's new iPhone lineup would consist of the second-gen iPhone X with the same size screen, a larger 6.5-inch version that we're tentatively calling the iPhone X Plus, and a mid-range 6.1-inch LCD model that adopts an iPhone X form factor and features but with a cheaper price point.

Kuo is upbeat on the shipments momentum of all three new iPhone models, and expects them to launch without any delays in 2018, given Apple's supply chain will be well experienced with iPhone X production by next year.

While he doesn't have an absolutely perfect track record, Kuo often relays accurate information from his sources within Apple's supply chain. Ahead of the iPhone X, he accurately detailed its 5.8-inch display, glass and stainless steel design, lack of Touch ID, 3D sensing, and several other features.

We've also already heard a few rumors about a 6.46-inch iPhone launching next year, so iPhone X Plus rumor season is well underway.

Exciting news. I will definitely get the X plus if it has 512 GB storage size and significant technological improvements. Otherwise, I keep using my X until 512 GB available. The 256 GB is no longer sufficient for my music and videos. The X size with plus power is so perfect and comfortable in shirt and pant pockets.

It makes no sense because the shift is towards large displays, for the entire industry.

Only diehard SE users think it makes sense.
The fact the "industry" is insane doesn't mean Apple should follow it. Apple used to dictate trends, not to follow them. Big displays are useless for most people, regardless of what they think, and Apple should know better (and it used to).

LCD can be as slim bezel as OLED.

Xiaomi Mi Mix for example uses TFT LCD and has a thinner bezel than iPhone X.
This. And I don't see why people call the iPhone X "bezel-less". It has bezels, and quite big too. Out there there are many phones with considerably smaller bezels.

6.5” in 19.5:9 is (slightly more than) half of 7.9” in 4:3

I don’t particularly understand why the Mini is being mentioned

That said, the Mini could very well be dead for other reasons.
Among those maybe the “full throttle on new features” mode of the recent ipad cycles doesn’t fit well on a small lower cost device.
Also the entry level model is 9.7” now and it wouldn’t make sense to offer a new Mini with less screen real estate than the base. The “iPad 9.7” 5th gen” is already the “iPad SE”. And a 7.9” Pro is not sustainable, probably.

a 6.5 256gb model will be at least $1399-1449
I really don’t think so. Next year, the 2017 X will be a year old and should drop to at least $899. That’s based on being a year older, without taking into account any price drops due to the OLED and FaceID components (and NAND hopefully) no longer being supply constrained, as well as economies of scale as TrueDepth goes into 200+MM devices.

Worst case, even if the 2018 X stays at $999—which I don’t think is likely—the X Plus wouldn’t be more than $150 higher, though it’s usually only $100 more for the Plus. Add $150 for upgraded RAM (maybe back to $100 if NAND supplies increase) and you’re at $1299.

If the 2018 X were possibly to drop to $949, the Plus only adding $100 and the memory bump back to $100, you could conceivably be looking at a price as low as $1149. The 2017 X would likely be $849 in this scenario.

In any event, the 8/8 Plus should be $599/699 by next autumn, so I could see the rumored 6.1” iPhone 9 Plus being $749 but not lower. I think it will be basically the same physical size as the current 8 Plus, just with smaller bezels than the current Pluses. No notch though, I think the bezel will be full-width. But curved corners for sure.

The best part was the asymmetrical notch on the side, right? Which orientation are you watching film? Notch to the left, or notch to the right?

Generally notch to the right, so the volume buttons are easier to get to. You really don't see the notch after a while, it just fades away.

How is it any different in terms of "best they can do" than having bezels at the top and bottom of the device? I'm sure it is the "best they can do" for 2017 and 2018. Unless you expect them to be able to put the faceID tech under the screen or make it 6 times smaller to fit in a tiny sliver traditional bezel in a single year.
Full Screen display†

Will always need that footnote with the notch, because it is NOT really full screen until they can eliminate the notch. And you KNOW Apple will backpedal, and switch back to Touch ID once someone else figure out how to embed under the display. They just don’t have the balls to admit they weren’t smart enough. Qualcomm has figured it out, but WILL not be sharing it with Apple.

Pretty sure Samsung will not be copying that notch turd.

It sucks that the 6.1" is the budget one with the LCD screen. That one to me would be the ideal sized phone that I'd like to buy if it had the OLED screen and all the bells and whistles.

Hell yeah!! Give me BIGGER!! I have a X and love it, but all that tiny text is still hard on my eyes. I can't wait for a X plus. Better yet they are making it huge, wow 6.5", even if that is really closer to 6.2" when you factor in the really narrow form factor.

The only thing is another freakin year of waiting, lol.

Yes looks about right and again no free fast charger.....
the fast charger is big and unsightly
finding it below an iphone during an unboxing experience would be like finding a carp-sized anchovy on a pizza.
Not sure why people think it’s (only) about the cost.

Just a few results from Google:
But, again, we're at least 10 months from its mattering.

Many sources are incorrect with respect to the terminology. The bottom line is that IPS, like TN and VA, are types of TFT screens, with differences in cost, viewing angle, response time, color fidelity, etc. When people compare “IPS vs TFT” what they really mean is IPS with another type of TFT.

This page has a brief history of IPS. https://www3.lenovo.com/ca/en/faqs/pc-life-faqs/what-is-ips/

TFT LCD? What? That is nonsense, who would use tft and not ips led?? Kuo is wrong or sthing is lost in translation...

IPS is a type of TFT screen and LED is just the backlighting technology for the screen. The current Apple displays are LED-backlit IPS-TFT screens.

I’d like to know who values the initial unboxing experience as much as having a state of the art charging solution that saves them time every single day.

You’re not forced to zoom the video into the corners/notch, you can watch it pillar boxed. The downside is then it’s like watching on a 5.0” device, due to the narrow display on the X giving you less height when you’re in landscape.

But the X Plus would make pillar boxed 16:9 video the same size as as older Plus models, 5.5” on the diagonal. Then if you do zoom in, it’s kinda huge—but then some content is lost on the top and bottom, and of course on the left and right due to (mostly) the notch, and the rounded corners.

They could have released the X Plus at the same time as the X. They chose to get a bunch of us to buy it twice.
